Top 10 accessories you need to make a cool gaming room

As we near the final days of 2023 (known in some circles as either one of the best years in gaming history or one of the worst) the massively popular gaming hobby shows no sign of slowing down in terms of public reception. In fact, Statista predicts that 3.1 billion humans (a little less than half of the current global population) will regularly play games as a hobby by 2027.

But can you truly call yourself a “gamer” if you don’t spend at least a little time and money decking out the room you play games in? I’m half-joking; of course there is no specific “correct” way to play video games in your own house. But there are quite a few gadgets and cool decorative items you can use to make any gaming room more impressive.

Whether you’re a PC gamer who wants an extra edge, a racing game enthusiast who wants maximum immersion, or if you simply want to make your entertainment center a little more comfortable, you’ve got a number of options at your fingertips to trick out your gaming room to match your style. To help you out, I’ve come up with a list of gaming room accessories that immediately come to mind, including a few mainstays I’ve used in my personal gaming setup for years.

1. Playseat Trophy – Logitech G Edition

Playseat is one of the best racing chair brands you can buy from, and this collaboration between Playseat and Logitech (called the Playseat Trophy – Logitech G Edition) is probably the best option for an all-rounder racing chair with direct drive wheel support plus all the other bells and whistles you’ll need for maximum immersion. It’s also advertised to naturally conform to the shape of your body thanks to Playseat’s patented ActiFit material, so you can theoretically sit inside of it and race for hours without developing aches and cramps. It’s a little expensive at an MSRP of $599.00, but it’s hard to find a decent racing chair below that price range, and critics love the mix of features and high build quality.

2. Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel and Pro Racing Pedals

If you’re going to invest in a high-quality direct drive racing wheel and accompanying racing pedals, you’re going to want to go straight to the best one on the market. That’s the Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel and Pro Racing Pedals bundled together for around $1348.99 – which, yes, is expensive, but if you’re in the market for a high-end racing setup anyway, is money even an object? GamesRadar+ had some especially kind words for the Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel, highlighting the powerful force feedback, robust customization options, and advanced features throughout the design. It’s also widely known as one of the sturdiest racing wheels around, with IGN’s slightly less enthusiastic review still giving credit to Logitech for delivering on its commitment to quality.

3. Cololight Smart RGB LED Gaming Lights

Hexagonal LED wall lights are a popular and stylish way to decorate any gaming area or entertainment center, and I find the Cololight COLO PLAY Ultimate Fusion Set offers the best price balance for the widest range of features as it’s designed around PC gaming setups – letting you sync a wide range of lighting systems (like Razer Chroma) with Cololight’s hex lighting pieces. The included COLO PLAY light switch sits comfortably on your desk and is especially useful to quickly cycle your hex lights and PC lights by simply twisting a knob. Not only that, but the company pledges to plant a tree with every purchase made on its online store, which is a nice gesture on its own.

4. Secretlab MAGNUS Pro

Sit-stand desks are an excellent centerpiece for any modern PC gaming setup, and one of the best-rated desks in 2023 is the Secretlab MAGNUS Pro. It’s spacious, sturdy, and has a number of quality-of-life features like electric height control, a cable management system, and even a little headphone hook for added convenience. It also contains a rather impressive integrated RGB lighting system, making for a unique and stylish design. Its height is configurable via an array of buttons conveniently accessible on its front panel. It’s expensive, but the reviews are unanimously (overwhelmingly) positive, with GamesRadar+ calling it the best sit-stand desk they’ve ever tested when they reviewed it in February 2023.

5. NEWTRAL MagicH Ultra Adaptive Support Home Office Chair

I personally dislike most gaming chairs I’ve ever sat in. I’m a firm believer that the secret to buying a proper gaming chair is avoiding them altogether, and instead investing in a really nice office chair. After all, office chairs are designed to be sat in for at least eight hours a day by office workers of all builds and ages. Their most critical function is comfort, and the NEWTRAL MagicH seems to push the boundaries on just how comfortable an office chair can be. This Kickstarter-backed office chair is advertised to provide full support in any sitting position, whether you’re sitting upright or reclining back. As someone who spends a lot of time sitting down in the same computer chair all day for both work and gaming, I’ve been looking for something that adapts to my needs throughout the day, and the NEWTRAL MagicH is on the tippy top of my wish list.

6. Logitech G560 LIGHTSYNC PC Gaming Speakers

I’ve been using these Logitech G560 2.1 PC speakers for years now, and I still recommend them as a compulsory purchase for any modern PC gaming setup. Their sound quality is decent enough – these aren’t going to compete against a proper 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound system, or even a nice pair of monitors. However, for the $200 MSRP, you’re getting a powerful 2.1 PC speaker system that also provides a ton of visual ambiance. These speakers double as LED lights that beam colors onto the surface behind your monitor. They can be configured via Logitech G HUB software to mimic the visuals on your monitor itself, creating a dynamic backlighting experience that heightens immersion when playing games and watching movies. Just remember to turn up the brightness to max and boost the subwoofer in the acoustics menu, otherwise these will be a lot darker and a lot quieter than advertised.

7. Samsung Odyssey OLED G9

The most stylish gaming PC monitor you can currently buy is the 49-inch Samsung Odyssey OLED G9, which looks incredible at 5120×1440 resolution with 1800R curvature. The Odyssey OLED G9’s integrated HDR 400 support should produce crisp and rich colors thanks to its OLED display, which doesn’t rely on a backlight and therefore negates the need for local dimming to generate deep blacks and bright whites. It’s designed for gamers first and foremost, running at up to 240Hz refresh rates with built-in support for AMD Freesync. Reviewers especially like how it produces near-instant response times, giving off no perceptible input lag. From a purely aesthetic perspective, the minimalistic design of its stand and the integrated RGB backlights make the Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 a centerpiece rather than an eyesore.

8. Xbox Mini Fridge

The Xbox Mini Fridge is admittedly a bit goofy, but then again, it’s not a “real” fridge. What was originally a meme product designed to build up hype for the then-new Xbox Series X in 2020, is still a genuinely cool item to have sitting around in any gaming room. It’s small, with a sleek black chassis and bright green inlay that mimics the design of a proper Xbox Series X. But its best feature is the integrated green LED that gives it its visual flair. Besides, it’s perfect to store a few cans of soda in since it is, after all, classified as a mini fridge.

9. Govee DreamView T1 Pro TV Backlights

Console gaming is way more immersive with a dynamic TV backlight that beams colors onto the surface behind your TV to match the visuals on-screen. Thanks to the Govee DreamView T1 Pro, you can light up your entire entertainment center across three different zones. It’s all controlled by a single camera placed on top of (or below!) your television screen, which can interpret the colors on the screen into information which tells the lighting zones which color to display at any moment. In action, the wide range of lights and colors displaying across the entire entertainment center makes games and movies come to life.

10. PDP REALMz Gaming Controllers for Xbox/PC/Nintendo Switch

Unique gaming controllers are a great way to personalize your gaming room, and thanks to the PDP REALMz diorama controllers for Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch, you can impress your friends with artsy designs that feature popular characters and backdrops. What really stands out here, though, is their transparent design, which makes them look retro. These are a great gift for any gamer in your life, or you can decorate your own gaming room with the wide assortment of styles and colors offered by PDP REALMz.

The captivating shadowbox-like controllers overshadow all the themed gamepads we’ve seen all these years. That fact is obvious from the diorama inside the transparent housing (inspired by the see-through design of the 2000s) fused with the officially licensed characters. In total, there are five controllers for the Nintendo Switch and one for the Xbox Series X|S. Of course, all these accessories are well complemented by the sole headphone that’ll be irresistible for arcade game lovers.

The storytelling of the multilayered diorama captures the imagination like never before, ably honed by the play of built-in LED lights with attractive A, B, X and Y buttons. For now, the major focus of these controllers stays on Sonic the Hedgehog, but PDP promises to introduce multi-layered controllers themed on the Transformers (Optimus Prime-inspired) and Pikmin 4 on October 13 and winters respectively. Boy, they are going to be cool or what!

The focus of each diorama stays on the landscapes of Sonic the Hedgehog, matching the blue and red joysticks against the lush backdrop of the Green Hill Zone. There’s a reinterpretation of the Sonic on the left side with a fish leaping out on the right. Sonic’s friends have not been ignored in another piece where Tails and Knuckles on the Seaside Hill and Sky Sanctuary zones.

Similarly, the Xbox version set for the December 1 release has our hero star in the blue, gray and white landscape with Speed Realmz imagery completing the scene. For keen collectors, the controllers are available right away for a dirt-cheap price tag of $50.

8BitDo recreates NEO GEO CD controller in wireless version + emulates click-style joystick to perfection!

8BitDo is renowned for making affordable controllers that come with customizable options. For their latest inspiration, they’ve chosen the cult-classic NEOGEO CD controller released back in 1994 and modernized it to be compatible with the current generation of devices.

The gaming accessory is compatible with Windows, Android and the lesser-known NEOGEO Mini miniature home arcade console released back in 2018 by Japanese publisher NSK. As per 8BitDo compatibility with iOS and macOS will follow soon. Without a semblance of doubt, the controller is yet another lucrative fusion of retro-modern in 8BitDo’s lineup.

Designer: 8BitDo

To make sure this gaming controller is compatible with a wide array of games and platforms, there are L/R shoulder buttons, layout customization options and turbo function. According to 8BitDo, they were able to mirror the “click-style joystick” sound and feel of the original one. This attribute of surreal tactile input made the NEOGEO CD controller highly popular among gamers. Apparently, emulating the microswitch joystick is not an easy task, and it took 8BitDo around 3 years to just perfect the joystick of the NEOGEO CD gamepad!

Since were bang in the middle of 2023, the gamepad comes with wireless connectivity option over Bluetooth or a 2.4GHz connection. There’s a rechargeable battery fitted inside to bring wireless functionality for 35 hours to the classic controller. For times when you prefer zero latency gaming or the in-built battery is running low, a physical cable can be attached too for uninterrupted action.

The controller is officially licensed by SNK and can be pre-ordered right away for a price tag of $35. There are four limited edition variants too for $40 each – with respective decals of Iori Yagami, Terry Bogard, Kyo Kusanagi, and Mai Shiranui) – celebrating the King Fighters ’97. NEOGEO CD Wireless Controller will be available on August 15, so you’ll have to wait till then for fun arcade gaming on your favorite gaming companion.

We just hope it has the familiar precise controls and input for fighting games like Metal Slug or classic sports titles!

The Sony PlayStation ‘Project Q’ Controller Already has a Potent Xbox Rival That Plugs to you Smartphone

Although Sony just debuted their first handheld gaming console ever since the PSP Street in 2011, the device, codenamed Project Q, received a lot of negative attention for how limited it was. The handheld console would, according to Sony, only work with the PS5, streaming games over a local WiFi connection. In short, you could only ‘stream’ games off the PS5 using a local internet connection, rather than playing your PS5 games anywhere. The folks at RIG were having none of that. Designed to be everything gamers wanted Sony’s Project Q to be, the RIG Nacon MG-X PRO gives gamers the ability to play all their favorite AAA games on the small screen, wherever they go. With its ergonomic design that lets you sandwich your smartphone in between, the MG-X PRO comes specially made for the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, giving you the ability to play all your favorite console games wherever you go. It’s also MFi-certified, allowing you to tap into your iPhone for some upper-echelon gaming that goes beyond the Apple Arcade.

The design of the  MG-X PRO places emphasis on familiarity and ease of use. Crafted to mimic the layout of an Xbox controller, the device includes Home/Nexus, View, and Menu buttons, as well as clickable asymmetric analog sticks. This design pays tribute to the traditional gaming feel while keeping pace with the advancements of mobile gaming technology.

Where the RIG MG-X PRO truly shines is its adjustable phone cradle. Engineered to accommodate a variety of iPhone models, starting from iPhone 6 and newer, this versatile cradle comfortably fits screens up to 6.7 inches in size. So whether you’re still cherishing your old device or have just upgraded to the latest iPhone, this wireless mobile controller has you covered.

Gaming can sometimes get pretty intense, and you’d be right to worry whether your phone, quite literally, is in good hands. To that very degree, the RIG MG-X PRO is designed with rubberized clamps, ensuring that your phone remains secure while you’re in the thick of the action. The last thing you need in the middle of a virtual battle is your device slipping out of its holder, and whether it’s an Android device or iPhone, the MG-X PRO holds onto it pretty snugly and securely.

The RIG MG-X PRO connects to your device using Bluetooth 4.2 (+ BLE), which ideally isn’t as low-latency as WiFi, but it does keep your phone’s WiFi antenna free to connect to external networks so you can stream your games effectively. Although designed for the Xbox Game Pass, the controller works with other gaming platforms too, including Steam Link, Nvidia GeForce Now, PS Remote Play, and even Apple Arcade. The controller comes with its own built-in battery that promises 20 whopping hours of gameplay on a full charge. It juices in a mere 2 hours too, letting you jump right back into gameplay after a quick break.

YD x KeyShot Inspiration Hub Design of the Week #1 – AirShock Inflatable Controller

We kick off the YD x KeyShot Inspiration Hub’s first Design of the Week with this absurdly innovative PlayStation controller that opts for an inflatable design as opposed to those hyper-ergonomic solid forms. Blow air into the controller and it puffs up into a lightweight handheld device that conforms to the shape of your hand the way an inflatable neck pillow adjusts to your body’s contours. Would such a device even be feasible? We’d have to try it out to really have actual answers… but there’s no denying one thing. That this concept from Running Guy Studio is refreshingly different and catches the eye with its unique style and brilliant rendering.

Jacknife Gamer is a gamepad for your phone that easily slips into your pocket

Handheld gaming is hip again, even after the demise of popular devices like the PlayStation Vita and the Nintendo 3DS. Of course, modern portable gaming handhelds like the Nintendo Switch and the Valve Steam Deck PC have made gamers dream once more of the ideal portable gaming system they can take with them anywhere. To some extent, that device does already exist, and it’s called a “smartphone.” While the mobile games industry has become a lucrative business in its own right, there are games that just don’t feel to be a good fit with touchscreen controls only. Game controllers for smartphones exist for that very purpose, but this gamepad takes portability very seriously by taking on a form so small that it’s only a little bit larger than your car’s keyfob.

Designer: Duncan Mao

It’s almost amusing how dedicated Android gaming devices are starting to pop up again after disappearing nearly a decade ago. After all, carrying yet another device in your pocket or bag might not appeal to those who already have a powerful Android phone or an iPhone that could run those same games without breaking a sweat. The problem, however, is that you’ll have to carry with you some form of a portable Bluetooth controller to snap onto your phone, something that is really not as convenient to bring along if you don’t carry a bag all the time.

The Jacknife Gamer is a rather innovative and cute accessory that solves that problem by shrinking the gamepad down to a 64mm x 29mm x 27mm block of plastic, something that you can easily slip into any of your pockets. It is actually made of two parts that swivel in and out of each other, with a phone holder that clamps onto your phone the same way many selfie sticks do. What makes it different from other Bluetooth gamepads, aside from its size, is that the controls sit below the phone in landscape rather than being split into left and right sides.

This design might seem odd, but it more easily supports the natural way you would hold a phone. The buttons are admittedly on the small side due to size constraints, but it’s actually impressive that it supports almost all the standard ones. There are even two bumpers on the back, though you’ll be missing out on left and right triggers, presuming you play games that require those extra controls. In most cases, that won’t be a problem for the majority of mobile games that have controller support unless you start wading into game streaming territory.

The Jacknife Gamer’s compact design makes it ideal for a brief interlude while waiting for someone or for your next schedule. It will probably feel a bit cramped for long periods of gaming, so it’s probably best for those short, unexpected moments of free time. The bigger problem is the number of mobile games that have full controller support since most presume the use of a touchscreen and only a touchscreen. A companion app that maps button presses to screen areas could help alleviate that problem, but the JKG, as it is nicknamed, just covers the basics for now.

This ultra-thin gaming controller boasts magnetically attachable button layer

The dynamics of gaming have changed in the last few years with smartphones stepping in for more than a makeshift handheld device. That compelling reason to load your mobile device with games is ever so logical with powerful processors ensuring you get to play the high-end, graphically demanding titles that have console-quality visuals.

Dedicated gaming phones elevate the level of immersion a notch higher, and combined with mobile gaming controllers the level of tactical advantage is a given. Best options currently include SteelSeries Stratus+, Backbone One, Razer Kishi V2, or 8Bitdo Pro 2.

Designer: Aryan Vijay

What if there’s a gaming controller for smartphones that’s better in every aspect looking from the perspective of casual, as well as more serious mobile gamers? An accessory that’s featherweight and doesn’t take much space yet brings loads of features to the fore. This is the PhoCo pocketable controller designed keeping in mind the long hours we tend to spend on our smartphones in very uncomfortable postures leading to chronic neck, head and back pain. Certainly not the preferable way to use your device.

The existing mobile gaming controllers on the market address some or all issues like portability, ergonomics and ideal posture; but cannot do all at the same time. PhoCo does it all with a very thin footprint – thanks to the physical triggers and joysticks for the best of traditional controllers and modern touch controls. The foldable support protects the screen and controls from damage while carrying, bringing portability to the equation. Aryan has added a stand on the back to keep things stable if the accessory is put on a desk or table.

A separable magnetic layer with the physical buttons can be superimposed on the display layer housing the joysticks and the triggers, giving the gamer flexibility of use which is very important. The screen with qwerty keyboard Users who like to keep a wide array of gaming titles on their capable smartphone will find this feature very useful.

Portable controller with advanced flight control buttons is a worthy replacement for dedicated flight gear

Playing Microsoft Flight simulator with a gaming controller has its limitation, but then, not everyone can own a filthy expensive flight simulator to enjoy the game to the fullest. Modern controllers are good for most genres like racing, fighting or arcade; but land flat on their faces when it comes to flight simulator games.

No more as Yawman Arrow combines the features of a joystick, desktop throttle quadrant and rudder controls to give players precise control of the plane’s movement. The compact controller is a god-sent accessory for sim enthusiasts who don’t want to clutter their desks with pricey pedals, throttle controllers or yokes. Basically, ones who value space and portability more than anything else.

Designer: Yawn Flight

The controller comes with dedicated controls for all the complex actions in-game. Things like six programmable buttons, five action D-Pad, a five-way hat switch, dual sliders and vernier-styled controls. This gives gamers very accurate input while flying planes like the Cessna 172 that have push/pull-styled throttle and mixture controls. There’s a pair of mechanically linked rudders (patent pending) that’ll give players a tactical advantage while flying in adverse weather conditions or operating a sim helicopter with advanced controls.

This custom-designed flight sim gamepad is ideal for air combat games with all the levers, wheels and sliders within fingers reach. Not only these features, but the controller has also six action buttons (compared to four on a normal controller) giving the player option to map more controls. There are mindfully designed grips on each side for ergonomic comfort during extended gameplay.

The only downside here I can point out is that it should have been wireless for more added value propositions. According to Yawman, the controller will be released this spring. The probable price tag of the accessory is also unknown at this time.

At the time of launch Yawman Arrow will be compatible with most of the PC flight simulation titles including the Microsoft Flight simulator, Laminar Research’s X-Plane (macOS as well), Lockheed and Martin’s Prepar3D. Infinite Flight for Android is also on the list of officially compatible games, and we can expect more titles to gain compatibility once the controller is popular with gamers.

Wireless charging dock for your game controller uses LED lights to tell you when you spend too much time gaming

Sort of like your “Screen Time” on the iPhone or “Digital Wellbeing” on Android, but for your gaming console.

Meet Oasis, a controller and charging cradle that collectively make sure you don’t end up spending your entire day playing Minecraft. The way they work is simple, decide how many hours you want to play and add that to the Oasis cradle. Lights on the cradle gradually change time as you play, turning red as soon as you’ve crossed your gaming limit. Once the lights turn red, you know you’ve spent enough time gaming and it acts as a neat visual reminder to do something else like go outside or eat a meal because you probably forgot to! Let’s be honest, we’ve all done that.

Designer: Xiao Wu

The OASIS was designed as a response to the Chinese government’s crackdown on gaming. While the government has strict mandates about how long children and teenagers can play computer/mobile games for, the OASIS uses visual cues to help curb addictive gaming tendencies. Games can be rather immersive, especially MMORPGs, causing you to lose track of how long you’ve been playing it for, which is why the OASIS controller proactively lets you set deadlines and helps you enforce them through visual cues.

The cradle isn’t just a wireless dock for the OASIS controller, it’s also a console in its own regard. Working entirely off the cloud, the OASIS fits the console in a much smaller form factor, making it roughly 80-85% smaller than even the Xbox Series X and about a third the size of the Series S. The console/cradle also comes with a concave upper surface that intuitively guides you to rest the controller on it, while a built-in wireless charger helps charge the controller between gaming sessions. It’s a nifty idea (and I wonder why Microsoft or Sony haven’t built wireless-charging into any of their controllers), although the only plausible caveat here is that you can only wirelessly charge one controller at a time. A USB-C port on the controller means you can plug a second unit directly into the cradle to charge it via cable.

While I’m not really a fan of governments deciding how long youngsters can game, the OASIS is a clever way to visually indicate your gaming duration. It works entirely based off of your own sense of autonomy, given that you pre-determine how many hours you want to play for, and have the console let you know when you’ve approached your own self-enforced limits. In practice, it’s really no different from the screen time features on smartphones and tablets, that help you curb screen addiction.
