Getting lost in the woods isn’t so bad with this tech

A walk through the woods. It sounds wonderful. Birds chirping, deer frolicking off in the distance, the majesty of the trees, the opportunity to get lost and drink river water that ties your stomach in knots. Hiking doesn't have to be a combination o...

Koze Inflatable Hammock Keeps You Koze While Kamping

One of the keys to having fun camping is being comfortable. It’s easy enough to be comfortable inside the tent – all you need is one of the plethora of available thin inflatable mattresses to lay on. What isn’t so easy to do is to get comfortable on breaks during your hike out to a camping site or around the fire at night. If you are car camping, you can just trot your chairs out and have a sit.

If you have to schlep stuff away from your car, carrying a few of those collapsible chairs can be a real pain, and they aren’t very comfortable to sit in. This is where Koze comes in.

The Koze is an air inflatable hammock or couch that multiple people can sit or lay on. They look very comfortable indeed and they collapse down into a small bag that weighs about two pounds. It’s made from parachute nylon and promises to stay filled for up to six hours and holds up to 400 pounds. It looks a bit bulky for minimalist backpacking trips, but it’s still way better than a hammock, which is bulky and you have to find a campsite near trees. Of course, it’s not just for camping either, and you can use it pretty much anywhere you need an impromptu seat.

It’s made from parachute nylon and promises to stay filled for up to six hours and holds up to 400 pounds. The project is on Kickstarter right now. Its makers were seeking to raise just $4,000, have has raised over $50,000 at the time of writing. A pledge of $60 will get you a Koze with shipping set for June 2016.

The Global Projected Satellite

Because of the great area they must cover on foot, hikers often find the screens of traditional hiking GPS devices too small to properly navigate terrain. As you might’ve guessed from the name, the Project Hiking GPS aims to solve this problem with a projected map instead of permanent screen. Simply aim and point on any surface like rocks, trees or the ground to see an enhanced, larger map that can be color adjusted for easy viewing. Ergonomically shaped to fit the hand, it’s also rugged and durable for tough outdoor use.

Edilble Business Card Gives You a Boost, Leads You to the Right Direction

Edible Business Card

High altitudes do weird things to the human body, even if it might be one that belongs to a seasoned trekker. Dizziness, nausea, fatigue, headaches–these are pains you wouldn’t want to have to go through in the middle of a climb. That’s what the folks from the Kokopelli Backpackers hostel had in mind when they rolled out their edible business cards that double as anti-altitude sickness remedies.

First of all, it’s a business card, so all the hostel’s pertinent contact information are printed on it. Then comes the interesting part: each card has a detachable, edible section made from coca leaves that gives climbers an extra boost as they chew on it.

Now that’s marketing and design at its finest!

Closed Watch Lets Hikers Know When the Sun is About to Set

One of the most important things to keep track of when you’re mountain climbing is the time. More specifically, the time when the sun’s going to set, because visibility gets increasingly limited as the sun goes down. It might seem like a simple thing, but it could be a matter of life and death in harsh outdoor conditions.

With this in mind, designers Baek Min Gyeoung, Jang Mi, Kim Seon Il, and Park Hyun Ju came up with the Closed Watch.

It’s a watch that aims to alert recreational hikers and professional climbers on the time the Sun is going to set in an intuitive fashion. At the set time, portions of the watch’s face darken as the sunset time is approached.

In a way, it also depicts a window of the time remaining before the sun completely sets.

The time of the sunset changes with the season, so Closed Watch allows the wearer to select the season by pressing one of two buttons on the sides of the watch. When sunset approaches, the face of the watch turns black behind the hour hand. The climber needs to descend before the watch face becomes fully covered.

The Closed Watch is a 2013 Red Dot Concept Design Award winner.

Snow and Ice Boots with Retractable Spikes

Now that Summer is behind us, it’s time to start thinking about the long cold icy Winter ahead. One where you hike and spend time outside in such snowy and icy conditions that you need to strap spikes onto your boots. Or should we say “needed to”. No more! Because with the Meindl Spike Boots, the spikes are built right in and they retract. To extend the spikes simply flip out the built-in dial in the heel and turn it.

Now you’re not slipping, you’re gripping. The six spikes are made from super tough tungsten carbide metal and have a triple-layer seal around them to keep the cold and moisture out. Inside the boot is warm lambskin with a waterproof Gore-Tex lining. These boots look like they’d be great for hiking around varying conditions and to easily go from outdoors to inside a home/car and back out without a hassle.
