Dungeons & Dragons Compatible The Lord of the Rings Game Coming

Having grown up playing Dungeons & Dragons with my cousins, I can tell you from experience that the game is quite fun and infuriating at the same time. It really depends on how big an a-hole your dungeon master is. If you really want to get your geek fix on, a new D&D compatible game based on J R R Tolkien’s Middle-earth is coming.

Yep, you will be able to play a D&D compatible role-playing game based in the world of The Lord of the Rings. Cubicle 7 Entertainment is making the game. The company says that its popular The One Ring role-playing game will continue as a separate line.

The new game series will be based on the work of Francesco Nepitello and will launch this summer. The company behind the game promises more details will be coming later this week.

LEGO Pinball Machine Gets You From the Shire to Mordor

LEGO Lord of the Rings Pingball Machine

Master builder Jonas’ latest creation is the epitome of geekiness, as it brings together Lord of the Rings and LEGO, in the form of a fully functional pinball machine.

Jonas, who isn’t exactly at his first LEGO build, has put a lot of thought into creating this pinball machine. Over the course of 12 hours, he used more than 2,000 LEGO pieces to put together this Lord of the Rings-themed contraption that not only looks great, but it can also help you pass the time.

“Odd-mashups are way more interesting than mashups you would expect. But the real reason for the mix with Lord of the Rings was simply that I hadn’t built something from my favorite movies for ages,” explained Jonas in an interview with Jennifer from The Brothers Brick, when asked why did he choose Lord of the Rings as this pinball machine’s theme. “Furthermore I planned the pinball machine in a pretty large scale, so I had to watch out to have the right amount of bricks in the right colors available. After collecting bricks for Middle Earth creations over the last few years, choosing to use that color palate would be a safe bet.”

Included in this arcade masterpiece are some of the most iconic locations from Middle Earth: Hobbiton (the ball shooter lane), Helms Deep, Ortanc, Weathertop (one of the bumpers), Fangorn, Minas Tirith, and even the Black Gates of Mordor that have taken the role of flippers.

In fact, Jonas pointed out that getting the flippers right didn’t actually present a challenge to him, but the pin turned out to be problematic. The play features, while difficult to implement, are now Jonas’ favorite part of the final creation:

“I mostly tend to build creations that focus highly on the aesthetics, colors and details. To push me out of that comfort zone I decided to build something that had to have real working features. A pinball machine seemed to be something that could be fun to build and fun to play with later.”

Since he has tackled various themes in his builds, ranging from Star Wars and Star Trek to District 9 and Deadpool, I must admit that I would like to see more such geeky pinball machines. The LoTR LEGO arcade was created specifically for the Iron Builder contest on Flickr, but I don’t think that such a talented builder needs incentives like this one all the time to produce remarkable contraptions.

It’s really amazing what some people can do in such a short amount of time with so many LEGO pieces. The project must have been thought out beforehand, but it’s still very impressive that Jonas has managed to put together a complex arcade machine in just 12 hours. This should really be seen as a proof of determination, as I think that Jonas’ pinball machine exemplifies more than just his creativity.

LEGO Lonely Mountain: LEGalf the Grey

It’s been a little while since we saw a truly epic LEGO build. We are changing that right here and now. One glance at this and fans of The Hobbit will recognize Erebor – the Lonely Mountain, the dwarf stronghold. A geek named Michał Kaźmierczak built this LEGO reproduction of the movie set and it’s incredibly detailed on the inside and out.

lego_erebor_3zoom in

The project took him seven months to build, and he used over 55,000 bricks. The finished model is 5-feet-tall and each of the big dwarf statues weighs 13 pounds. The image with the builder standing next to the creation gives you an idea of the massive size.

My favorite part is that he didn’t just build the outside and leave wooden supports showing in the back. This project is actually finished in high detail on the inside and out. This may be the coolest Tolkien themed LEGO creation ever.

Lord of the Rings Anduril Flame of the West Sword Replica

If you are a huge Lord of the Rings fan, you might know the Anduril Flame of the West sword and its significance. If you like the movies but aren’t a super fan you might not. This sword was used in the battle against Sauron and cut the ring of power from the hand of Sauron.

What you see here is a replica of that sword and if you have any visions of cutting evil hands you are out of luck, as this sword is dull on both edges. The blade of the sword is made from 420 J2 stainless steel with runes etched into the sides, and it will take an edge if you want a sharp object.

The sword comes with a wooden display plaque for hanging on the wall and a certificate of authenticity. The matching scabbard is made from real leather and has a 24k gold-plated finish. The sword goes for $179.99(USD) and the scabbard will set you back another $129.99 at ThinkGeek.

DIY Hobbit Sting Sword Glows Near Unsecured Wi-Fi Networks: Whitehat Baggins

The magical dagger Sting protected Bilbo from evil creatures and glowed blue when there were orcs nearby. But WarSting, Spark IO’s modern take on Sting, provides a more timely warning. It will glow when there are unsecured wireless networks nearby.

hobbit-sting-wi-fi-sword-warsting-by-spark-iozoom in

WarSting is an offshoot of Spark IO’s WarKitteh, the Wi-Fi sniffing cat. They modified a toy Sting that had LEDs, a speaker and a motion sensor. They then spliced in their Spark Core chip and reprogrammed it to detect unsecured Wi-Fi networks.

hobbit-sting-wi-fi-sword-warsting-by-spark-io-2zoom in

They also made it so that if you swing WarSting, it will join and store the name of the unsecured network to a Spark Cloud account, then disconnect from it. It will then stop glowing if there are no other unsecured networks. Otherwise, you can keep swinging until you’ve marked all free rides to the Internet innocent networks.

Your browser senses a link nearby. Head to Spark IO’s website to find out how you can make a WarSting.

Man At Arms Reforges Sauron’s Mace

If you’re not already following Man at Arms: Reforged, you should be. The show features a talented team of metal workers from Baltimore Knife & Sword, one of the finest swordmakers for stage combat and sparring in the world, and they create cool weapons based on sci-fi and fantasy. They’ve already given Batman Wolverine’s claws, bestowed Iron Man with a sword, and built a lightsaber Katana for Yoda, but now they’ve created a weapon of horrifying magnitude: Sauron’s mace.

sauron_macezoom in

Yeah, I’d wager they’d be a bit better at wielding it if they were nine-feet-tall, supernatural death machines, but if I ran into a totally normal human holding this thing in a dark alley, I’d hand over my wallet. That thing looks like it would hurt.

Check out what they and their predecessor Tony Swatton have done so far here, and then overload them with your own great ideas, thus prompting an epic build like this one.
