PSA: White House to host ‘We the Geeks’ hangout tomorrow at 12PM ET

In the spirit of San Diego Comic Con, the White House is set to host a special geek-themed Google+ Hangout tomorrow, July 19th, at 12:00 PM ET to celebrate the geniuses pioneering real-life superhero-style technology. The event, part of its "We the Geeks" series, will cover recent innovations in materials science that could potentially take us to infinity and beyond, like impenetrable liquid armor, self-healing and touch-sensitive synthetic skin. Joining the Hangout are notable experts including (but certainly not limited to) James Kakalios, author of The Physics of Superheroes, Nathan Landy, a Duke University graduate student working on an invisibility cloak and Nate Ball, host of PBS's Design Squad Nation and inventor of the Batman-like Ascender. ISS Flight Engineers Chris Cassidy and Luca Parmitano are set to commence a spacewalk on the ISS today starting at 8:10 ET. The pair will undertake the final installation of bypass jumpers, providing essential power redundancy to critical components. Other tasks to be completed on the walk include replacing a video camera, relocating wireless television kit and performing vital checks on component door covers. This will be the fifth spacewalk performed on the ISS this year, and the 171st in support of the station overall. You can watch the preliminaries right now, or head back at 8:10 to catch the action.

Update: As those watching will be aware, the spacewalk wound up being cut considerably short due to a water leak in astronaut Luca Parmitano's helmet that required him to be assisted back inside the space station.

‘Dumb Ways to Die’ Print Ads

There are many stupid ways to do yourself in, and advertising agency McCANN has turned a bunch of them into colorful and completely adorable posters for public consumption.

Remember the animated PSA Australia’s Metro Trains released over half a year ago? The catchy clip got over 50 million views and featured the same cheery characters singing about dumb ways to die in an effort to make people more conscious of their surroundings and safety when they’re at the train station.

The PSA was part of an effort by Metro Trains to reduce the number of train-related deaths.

I think they make that point across very well. There are really so many dumb ways to die – you just have to make sure you’re not dumb enough to die in such a manner – or you might end up a posthumous recipient of a Darwin Award.

Don’t Drive and Drive: This PSA Will Scare You into Sobriety

A good PSA leaves a lasting impression and makes the person watching it choose to follow what’s being advised in the announcement. An excellent PSA, on the other hand, manages to do that and go viral as well.

Guess which descriptor best fits this PSA on drunk driving that was made by London’s Department of Transportation.

So many people lose their lives because of drunk driving, whether they’re the ones behind the wheel or the ones out in the streets at the wrong place, at the wrong time. To drive the point across that people shouldn’t drink and drive, London’s DOT decided to scare the crap out of a bunch of guys who were using the bathroom at the bar (or should I say pub?) they were in.

As they wash their hands, a bloody mannequin smashes through the window complete with sound effects.

I guess the DOT decided to go the “scare ‘em into sobriety” route – or at least make them never want to wash their hands again. What do you think?

PSA TMobile's Samsung Galaxy S 4 available online today

Samsung's latest flagship, the GS4, landed on Sprint and AT&T a couple of days ago, and now it's T-Mobile's turn to join the party -- at least by way of its virtual stores. Taking advantage of the carrier's recently unveiled pricing scheme, the Galaxy S 4 will be available starting at $149.99 up front for the 16GB model (plus the $20 extra per month for the next two years, of course). Now, if you're looking to physically pick one up instead, you'll have to wait a little longer, as it won't be available at brick-and-mortar shops until May 1st.

PSA Twitter is down for some, as is iCloud and the iTunes Store

Nope, it's not your picture of "the best duck confit I've ever had" that's causing that Twitter post to error out -- the service is down for "some users," according to a Twitter status page update. It's unknown what's causing the issue (again, probably not your photweet), but we're assured "engineers are currently working on this issue." We're experiencing some snags ourselves, usually resulting in tweets timing out before publishing. Hang tight!

But maybe don't try to while away your time on the iTunes Store or by backing up your phone to iCloud, as those services are also experiencing some downtime issues this morning. An Apple support page lists both as seeing "some users affected;" we'll just have to assume engineers are also hard at work on fixing that. As always, we'll let you know when things get better.

Update: Looks like Twitter is all back to normal, and the company says, "this issue has been resolved." Apple, on the other hand, is still having issues with Apple ID and Game Center login.

Update 2: Apple is now all back to normal as well, according to the company's support page. But do let us know if you're experiencing any issues!

PSA Sprint LTE is live in San Francisco

Imagine our surprise when, upon firing up Sprint's Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 earlier today for some routine app updates, we saw the 4G logo light up (!) for the first time ever. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it appears that sometime in the past few days, Sprint's finally deigned to flick the LTE switch in a significant market -- namely beautiful San Francisco. We immediately grabbed our Optimus G and EVO 4G LTE review units and hopped in the car for some quick nearby tests. The verdict? We found pockets of LTE in Potrero Hill and SoMa, and nothing but CDMA in the Mission District -- that's two out of the three neighborhoods we checked. Speeds reached peaks of 16.7Mbps down and 9.4Mbps up with full signal but performance varied wildly, even block to block. Sprint had already enabled LTE in parts of Silicon Valley and had marked the city by the bay for one of its upcoming rollouts. Do you use Sprint and live in SF? PSA Microsoft Surface Pro now available in the US and Canada

After missing initial shipping plans with some undisclosed delays, and despite seeing its welcome party in NYC abolished by a storm dubbed Nemo, Microsoft's finally started the process to make that long-awaited Surface Pro available to the masses. Starting with US and Canada residents, those seeking Redmond's in-house hardware and a full serving of Windows 8 can now snag a Surface Pro starting at $899 for the 64GB model, while the more spacious 128GB unit is slightly costlier at $999. And while these prices do include Microsoft's pressure-sensitive pen, they don't account for any other fancy accessories, which means potential buyers will have to shell out a little extra cash if a Touch or Type Cover are of interest -- more specifically, $120 and $130, respectively. We'll see how Ballmer and Co. cope with demand this time around, but as history would kindly note, it's probably best to be one of the first in line just to be extra, extra safe.

PSA: Nintendo TVii now live on Wii U in North America, no download required

Nintendo TVii is now available on Wii Us in North America, arriving right on time with Nintendo's 24-hour window of "December 20." The service -- which promises to unify the console's disparate media services under a single application, dubbed "TVii" -- doesn't yet support the promised TiVo or Netflix integration it was announced with, but the former is said to arrive in January, while the latter is expected in "early 2013." To start using it, just turn on your Wii U and select Nintendo TVii -- if you're already all up in Acorn Plains with your Raccoon Suit on, just head into the Home menu. Also, maybe take off that Raccoon Suit you're wearing before the family gets home.

Kobo Arc available today in Canada and UK, coming to France on Monday

Kobo's Arc tablet is hitting stores for the first time in Canada and the UK today, leaving eager punters in the US of A wondering if they've been forgotten. In America's hat, the 7-inch competitor to the Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7 is showing price tags of 200, 250 and 300 Canadian dollars for the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions, respectively. A WHSmith exclusive in the UK, £160 and £190 is what you'll need for the lesser two options, and we can't see a 64GB listing online just yet. French store Fnac will keep customers waiting til Monday, when they'll be able to swap €200 for an Arc avec 16 gigs -- its listings show no other sizes right now, barring a non-existent 8GB variant. Kobo hid a surprise for us in the announcement PR, too: it's already working on a Jelly Bean 4.1 update for the ICS tablet. If you're American and bummed you're not reading this on your own shiny new Arc, it's already passed inspection, so should be shipping before you know it.
