Tripod, I’m your Father…

Why are photography kits so large? Because tripods are huge. The various modules and attachments for each component of the camera end up occupying double the space of the camera itself.

The Swiss knife analogy has been done to death, but it seems like the perfect description for the PicaPod. Small, and incredibly versatile, the pod will make you want to ditch all your professional gear, because they aren’t all-in-one.

With the PicaPod, you’ll run out of things to mount. This one bad-boy can and will allow you to mount everything in one place, so no matter, if you’ve got a GoPro, or a DSLR, or a 360° camera, or even just a point & shoot, you’re sorted.

The tripod comes with a standard mount that can take care of your video recording devices. However, it comes with a tri-rail schematic that can hold more than one device. You can hook your phone, microphone, battery pack, or anything else you can think of to the PicaPod. The PicaPod’s base makes a rather handy tripod but you can even unscrew it to mount it on a professional tripod… or even a grip. The PicaPod comes with a grip that makes your entire video setup hand-held. No matter how loaded with peripherals you are, the PicaPod adapts to bind all of them together in a package that’s easy to carry and manage. It’s so small, you won’t notice it. It’s so incredibly adaptive and functional, you’ll never leave home without it!

Ditch the separate tripod, gimbal, microphone mount. Get yourself a tripod, hand-held mount, microphone mount, and much more… ALL IN ONE!

Review: iKlip Grip Pro – One Smartphone Mount to Rule them All

If you like to shoot videos or photos with your smartphone, chances are you have at least one accessory like a selfie stick or a tripod. Each of these serves a purpose, but it’s frankly a pain to carry around multiple gadgets. Enter the iKlip Grip Pro, an extremely versatile accessory that not only works as a telescoping selfie stick, but works as a tripod, and as a handheld grip. It holds pretty much any smartphone on the market, with or without a case.

In handheld mode, it works as a grip that keeps your fingers away from the screen, and adds stability to shots. You can then extend the grip’s telescoping rod and use it as a selfie stick, or to get shots over the heads of a crowd. An integrated, detachable Bluetooth shutter lets you operate your iOS or Android camera remotely. The pole extends from 19cm (~7.4 in) to 63 cm (~24.4 in) in length, and locks securely in place at each of its four segments.

At the base of the iKlip Grip Pro are three legs which pop out to form a tripod. This works well for cases where you want to have rock solid shots, and is great when used in conjunction with the remote for shooting videos of yourself. The ball-head mount holds firmly, and offers a wide degree of adjustability, and lets you lock down your smartphone just about at any angle.

The tripod works with both smartphones and with cameras with a 1/4″ UNC thread, weighing up to 35.2 oz. I tested the tripod in tabletop mode with my Sony a6300 and the heaviest lens I own, and the ballhead mount held strong. That said, it doesn’t have a weighted base, so you won’t want to do use this in a high traffic area or in the wind.

You can also extend the tripod using the telescoping mechanism, but it’s pretty top-heavy, so I wouldn’t trust it with anything heavier than a GoPro in this mode.

Overall, the iKlip Grip Pro is an extremely handy tool for any smartphonetographer to keep in their bag of tricks. It replaces at least a couple of items with a single one, is easy to carry and easy to use. You can order the iKlip Grip Pro starting on December 6th for $59.99(USD).

Edelkrone StandPLUS Reinvents the Tripod

Using a tripod can mean getting the perfect picture, but the problem is getting it set up in time to take that shot. Somebody finally built a better tripod. The tripod of the future coming soon, and it eliminates knobs, buttons, and those awkward extending legs. All of this means that it can be easily positioned in seconds.

The StandPLUS camera stand from Edelkrone has a unique folding design that collapses down to just 20 inches long, but it can be raised to a height of around five feet. It has a compact footprint and unique flexibility. It also has unique pivoting hinges that can hold their position without having to loosen or tighten any knobs. To really understand how cool the StandPLUS really is, just check out the video below:

The stand supports a DSLR with a decent sized lens, though we are guessing that the amount of weight it can support depends on the angle you want to use it at. It’s going to be hard to use on uneven terrain, but is probably awesome for studio work.

It is a quantum leap for tripods, no doubt. You have to love that design. I just love how quickly it sets up.

The Most Versatile Scooter Ever?

tripod_00

Tripod is a scooter that functions as more than just a tool for personal mobility and leisure… it also works as a portable platform for transporting objects! When you’re not using it to move yourself around, you can easily move a heavy potted plant, a bookcase, or even a heavy filing cabinet. Try doing that with your Segway!

The scooter comprises a metal plate that is coated with silicone rubber. The roller balls have inserts that are made of Caprolon or a similar fluoroplastic material. Its main design highlights are the safety features and the versatility of application.

MōVI Stabilized Camera Gimbal Might Shake Up Cinematography

A couple of months ago we saw the SteadyWheel, a very affordable camera accessory that can help you stabilize your shots. The MōVI is way more expensive than the SteadyWheel, but for what it can do – and the money, time and effort it could save – it seems like more bang for the filmmaker’s buck.

movi freefly stabilized camera gimbal

Made by Freefly, MōVI is a “digital 3-axis gyro-stabilized handheld camera gimbal.” It can be operated by one person or you can enlist another person to control the camera while you carry and move it about. Here’s a quick demo of the MōVI’s stabilization powers:

Mind not blown? Here’s what it can do:

Wow right? Once you don’t have to worry about keeping the camera stable I imagine it frees directors and cinematographers to think of a lot of different shots and angles. It helps that the MōVI only weighs about 4lbs. I’m pretty sure those of you who are into TV and filmmaking are scraping your brains off of your walls right now. Finally, here’s the final cut of the short film. It was directed by Vincent Laforet, and yes, every shot you’ll see was made with the MōVI.

Laforet said Freefly will release two models of the MōVI. The MōVI M10 will be the first one to be released. It will be priced at $15,000 (USD) and will have a 10lb. capacity. A smaller model called the M5 will follow for half the price. Later on, Freefly plans to release the big bad M20, which should be able to carry heavier cameras and accessories. I highly recommend you check out Laforet’s website for more details on the MōVI.
