Crafting a Miniature Pac-Man Arcade Game Drink Coaster

Ever wanted to craft your own miniature Pac-Man level drink coaster? Who hasn’t? It’s a universal human dream. And to help us achieve that dream, YouTuber The Avid Creator avidly created this video detailing how he made one. Just follow along to make your own! Will yours turn out as well as his did? Yours might, but mine definitely won’t.

He constructed the base and walls of the level from finely-cut wood pieces, while the pellets, ghosts, and Pac-Man are made of polymer clay, with everything painted and then sealed with epoxy resin. Admittedly, that is a good-looking drink coaster. Way nicer than my coaster, which just looks like a water ring on the coffee table.

Does anybody want to make a bunch of these for me to give out as Christmas gifts this year? I can promise you’ll be handsomely rewarded. With praise, just to be clear – not with actual money. Come on, Santa doesn’t even pay his elves!

These circuit board coasters let you get your geek on at parties

Many people probably want to impress guests with their furniture and home decor during social gatherings. Those can go anywhere from a new coffee table to a fancy shelf to maybe even a hi-tech gaming desk. Occasions such as these often involve drinks in glasses or even bottles that could ruin the otherwise pristine surfaces of wood, metal, or even plastic. That’s how coasters strike two birds with one stone, protecting furniture while also showing off some of your tastes. Coasters can come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and designs, some even sticking to a specific theme. This set, for example, is a fine way to spark your guests’ interest and subtly flaunt your inner geek.

There was a time when being labeled as a “geek” meant the end of your social life. While some of that stigma still remains today, “geek culture” has become a more widely accepted phenomenon that is earning big bucks too. Superhero movies and shows are billion-dollar businesses as much as gaming continues to be. Almost everyone knows how to use computers these days, and some are even pushing for programming to become a basic subject taught to grade school students.

This wider acceptance is partly thanks to the role that computers and electronic devices play in today’s civilization, and nothing represents such products better than the good old PCB or printed circuit board. Acting as the nervous system of computers and advanced electronics, circuit boards are easily identifiable and memorable for decades, unlike floppy disks. And as it turns out, they make pretty good decorative products as well.

These coasters are the real deal, at least as far as the accuracy of their lines or traces goes, as well as the materials used for their production. The patterns are actually based on a real PCB for a microcontroller, not unlike the popular Arduino that modders and makers just love to use. Instead of simple copper, however, the traces use a super-thin layer of gold to make them really stand out and retain their luster over time.

These aren’t just for show, of course, as the coasters are also treated to make them insensitive to extreme temperatures. This makes them perfect for setting down any kind of drink, be it a cold soda can or a hot mug of coffee. Whether you’re showing off at parties with like-minded individuals or just looking for a coaster that reflects your interests, these PCB coasters definitely offer an eye-catching way to protect your table from stains and precipitation.

This coaster has an AI bartender that guides you through the cocktail making process

I’ll be honest. That title above gets progressively more unpredictable with each word… and yes, I’m completely sober as I write this article.

This is the Barsys Coaster, a smart coaster with a mini weighing-machine and an AI inside it that coaches you through the fine cocktail-mixing process. The coaster works with the Barsys app, which lets you select a recipe, while the coaster itself sits on a table with an empty glass above it. The app tells you how to build your cocktail, by telling you what to pour into your glass, while the coaster and its weight-sensor lets you know when to stop pouring. The incredibly precise weight-sensor within the coaster can know exactly when you’ve poured the right amount of gin, or vodka, or orange juice, while the app itself then tells you to stop pouring and proceed to the next step. The result? Precisely crafted cocktails courtesy an AI bartender and your passion for drinking fine cocktails from the comfort of your own house as Netflix cues the next episode of whatever it is you’re watching!

Barsys Smart Coaster tells you how to pour the perfect cocktail

Mixing a cocktail requires skill and precision -- or the Barsys Smart Coaster. The new device is a small disc that connects to the Barsys app. To mix a drink, you simply place a glass or pitcher on the smart coaster and select the drink you'd like to...

These grooved cork discs act as coasters as well as air-tight container-lids

Nominated as a finalist for the prestigious James Dyson Award, the Montados are a set of lid/coaster hybrids made from recycled cork. Its unusual grooved design (with differently spaced grooves on the front as well as back) serves a pretty neat purpose. Not only do the grooves act as a collecting rim for any liquid that spills on it, making the Montados a great set of coasters, but when placed on the top of any cylindrical container, the Montados can securely fasten around the rim with a nice, air-tight seal.

The key to this unique, useful interaction is the spacing of the ridges on the cork surface. The ridges on either side of the lids are contrary to each other, so if the lid doesn’t fit on side A, just flip the lid over, and the ridge on side B should fit just fine.

The cleverness of the Montados is also in its choice of material. These lids could easily be made out of a thermoplastic polymer or silicone, but Marlene Bruch’s choice of cork is ideal, given its flexibility, eco-friendly nature, has the ability to withstand moisture, and most importantly, is an insulator, making it perfect for hot vessels. The Montados also offers an alternative to single use plastic foil and aluminum wraps, giving it the advantage of being reusable, recyclable, and green. And oh, the lids can nest within each other too, making them lock together for convenient storage and easy shipping!

From the Workshop to the Tabletop

This concept by 1/plinth studio is proof that industrial designers can find inspiration in the strangest of places — even in the very tools they use to make things. The design was dreamed up upon gazing at an abrasive disc that’s more commonly used for grinding or polishing surfaces. What the designers saw, however, was a set of 14 unusual coasters. Each disc in the stackable set has its own unique texture and color. Combined, they make for a unique conversation starter and add touch of industrial style (and ring protection!) to your tabletop.

“The 14 coasters possess a different tactile sensation in order to engage the user and allow a different experience depending on the type of coaster and type of cup used,” 1/plinth studio told Yanko Design.

These coasters have holes in the middle made up of a 4-inch diameter disk, similar to a doughnut, and can be stacked on top of one another on a rack. The rack comes in two size options. Its lid and bottom pad are made up of abrasives similar to the coasters which it holds.

Can of Potato Chip Coasters: Yummiest Coasters Ever

Can of Potato Chip Coasters

Go for prevention instead of the cure. Not that water rings are a disease, but they eventually become a pain to clean up once you’ve left them on your coffee table long enough. Prevention has always been to grab a coaster and set it down onto the table before you put your glass down. It’s natural for people to forget (or be too lazy to get up and get one from the kitchen), so the solution comes in this little can.

It’s the coaster of Wavy Chips, and you’ll find a stack of coasters instead of potato chips inside this little canister. Go get your Pringles elsewhere because this can holds nothing but coasters. The quirky packaging lets you leave it right on the table, so it’s within reach anytime anyone needs one.

A can of four wavy chips coasters is priced at $12.99.
