Always cribbing about the background blur in your portrait shots for that Instagrammable picture? Then this DIY will have your wildest pipedreams fulfilled. Built by Matthew Perks who’s a very sorted and respected DIYer in the tech community, this amazing project dubbed Perkiscope is the result of a unique lens salvaged out of an Episcope. It focuses the view from the inside onto the outside world rather than the conventional method of focusing on the view from the outside to the interior.

Since it projects onto a screen, it doesn’t matter which camera or lens is used, the effect of the DIY lens remains the same. Even a smartphone can be used with it, so pop-out social media posts are guaranteed since the subject separation is exceptional. Now don’t even compare the blurring effect to that achieved by today’s smartphones having digital blurring effects.

The optical effect achieved with the unique lens is dream-like quality, and virtually incomparable to the unreliable and very fake-looking digital blur. The only justified comparison would be with a full-frame shooter like the Cannon R5 – 35mm f/1.8 large aperture lens.

The blur achieved with the camera is elusive and has immense potential for film production, wedding photography, music videos, and other related industries. That’s if somehow the bulky build can be more compact and manageable. To give you an idea, the fastest full-frame lenses ever made is a 50 mm f/0.7 lens. It is better in low light photography due to its project direct to sensor technology, but even this lens can’t reach the subject separation of this DIY camera. The special episcope lens has a crop factor of 0.08 – meaning that even though it is a 432mm f5 lens it performs the same as a 35mm F0.4 lens. Due to its very large imaging circle of 0.785 square meters, the lens is wider and faster than the Carl Zeiss lens that’s the holy grail of photography.

Something worth highlighting with this DIY camera setup is its $190 cost which is a no-brainer when compared to the 50mm f/0.7 lens costing a mind-numbing $200,000. Although the setup is quite large, the photography opportunities it offers are worth their weight in gold. Night vision cameras, like those used for security or wildlife photography, use infrared light to be able to see. While this does work to some extent, it has a few critical disadvantages. For one, some animals can actually see that IR light or at least the camera’s light indicators and get spooked by it. More importantly, however, the images and videos that such cameras produce have your typical greenish or bluish appearance. That might be good enough for military purposes but not for nighttime photography or even security.

Apple iCam Pro action camera is for content creators who’ve had enough of GoPro Hero10

An iPhone 13 like action camera, but in a sleeker and smaller form factor. Yes, that’s what Apple could consider for the growing action sports market and content creators who are always on the lookout for compact cameras capable of shooting amazing video. Could the iCam Pro concept with a triple-cam setup be the catalyst to our craving for an Apple action camera?

Action cameras have their own set of merits which make them the preferred choice for capturing the moment, rather than carrying bulky DSLRs or shooting with premium phones. The latter can take the photography and videography to the next level but cannot be compared to action cameras when it comes to stabilization and wide-angle shooting prowess in high resolution and frame rates. No doubt content creators swear by the GoPro Hero10, Insta360 ONE R, and DJI Osmo Action for their versatility.

If you’ve always wondered why Apple doesn’t aspire to make an action camera, then you’re not alone. Given the video shooting capabilities of the Apple iPhone Pro 13 Pro Max (and predecessors as well) the Cupertino giant will logically have a good hand if such a product is developed in the future. The iCam Pro concept by Varun Anand gave us a tangible view of the possibility Apple action will bring to the fore. Now another concept dubbed iCam Pro (Yes, it’s called exactly the same) portable sports camera captures the imagination to give us even more reason to root for such a product (I hope executives at Apple are secretly reading this piece).

The iCam Pro conceptualized by Diego Valdés (aka. Diego Valoro Design) is a miniaturized version of the iPhone 13 – of course with a slightly different utility of documenting extreme experiences. The triple-camera module setup is a detour from the convention of a single potent camera on such sports cameras. This could be a USP for a brand like Apple who’ll foray into a very competitive space dominated mostly by GoPro. The slimmer, more rectangular shape of the action camera will give prospect users the freedom to carry it in the pocket of their jeans without getting uncomfortable. The choice of colors and materials will also play a part in the success of iCam Pro, if we happen to ever see one in real life.

This all-in-one broadcast device is the wire-free mess content creators need

Industrial designer DPP Da’Peng conceptualized an all-in-one broadcast device for content creators to have a one-stop shop for quality production.

With content creation becoming one of the most sought-after fields to work in these days, broadcast equipment is getting some major buzz. Whether you have a podcast or are an aspiring influencer, access to quality broadcast equipment is the first step towards making it viral.

Depending on the type of content you create, the necessary equipment will vary, which means content creators typically own all kinds of different equipment. Keeping that many wires and devices in one space can get messy.

Decluttering the experience of content creation, industrial designer DPP Da’Peng conceptualized an All-in-One Live Broadcast device that takes care of every aspect of content creation in one go.

In designing their All-in-One device, DPP Da’Peng hoped to solve the issue of passive wheat dissipation present in broadcast equipment currently on the market. Finding an issue with the size of current heat sinks, Da’Peng notes,

“Due to the limitation of volume and microphone recognition sound, a large area of [the] metal aluminum heat sink is required to assist the machine to dissipate heat and work normally. So balancing heat sinks and design criteria is the primary issue.”

In finding the equipment’s final form, DPP Da’Peng conceptualized their all-in-one broadcast device in two different iterations. In its first version, Da’Peng visualizes the device supported by a tripod. Propped upright, the multi-functional camera is envisioned in a cubic form with an integrated heat sink sandwiched between the camera’s lens and body.

The second iteration, also situated atop a tripod, appears more like a compact projector. Unlike the first rendering, Da’Peng’s second camera’s lens module is oval-shaped while the body takes on a rectangular silhouette.

Both cameras feature intuitive record buttons and the lens rotates 90-degrees to switch between landscape and portrait modes. In addition, the heat sinks of both iterations are kept to a minimum and a wireless design takes care of the mess that comes with current broadcast devices on the market. The tripod is also optional, so when creators want to use the cameras like they would a webcam, both devices can easily mount computer screens.

Apple AirCam concept sounds logical but is unlikely to happen

A concept for a standalone camera tries to think the way Apple does but might still come up short of providing a convincing USP to become an actual product.

There is no shortage of dreams and wishes that people have when it comes to Apple products. On the mobile front alone, the list spans from simpler requests of a larger battery to wishful thinking about foldable iPhones. There is also no shortage of creative designers coming up with concepts that seemingly reflect Apple’s language and principles, like this AirCam idea that almost checks all the right boxes.

This wouldn’t be the first time someone came up with the idea of a standalone camera that would make GoPro shake in fear. An earlier “ActionCam” concept was actually closer to the popular action camera than to any of Apple’s accessories, though it did have some design cues similar to an AirPods case. The complexity of the device, however, easily marked it as a pipe dream, something that this newer concept is trying to avoid.

In coming up with the design concept for an Apple camera, designer Andrea Copellino tried to stick to known Apple design principles like simplicity and compactness. The squarish camera definitely hits those marks almost to an extreme degree. It has no display of its own, for example, requiring the use of an iPhone or an iPad as a separate viewfinder. Such a design isn’t exactly unheard of, though more often employed on 360-degree cameras than action cams.

The designer’s justification for the existence of something like an AirCam would be to offer a higher-quality camera not just for content creators but for future users of Apple’s future AR glasses. In theory, this would allow Apple to address a very specific market segment, one that requires dedicated camera hardware, without adversely affecting its other products.

That said, Apple is unlikely to create its own standalone camera for the very same reason of simplicity. An Apple AirCam wouldn’t exactly be simpler to use and would be difficult to handle without another paired device, something that would also go against Apple’s philosophy. The company is also more likely to improve its iPhone’s camera as much as it can and market that extensively rather than come out with a first-party accessory that basically admits that it isn’t up to snuff.

This instant film camera brings the digital camera convenience to the art of film photography

Moir 21 is an instant film camera concept designed to blend the quality of film photography with the convenience of digital cameras.

While today’s world is swarmed with endless content and digital photographs, we’ve lost touch with the art of analog photography. Most of today’s feeds feature photos taken from smartphones and digital cameras, but you can always tell the difference between those and photographs taken on film.

There’s a mystique to film photography, but for modern purposes, we tend towards digital mediums. Blending the two together, design team Sarwan Bhinder and Vishnu R conceptualized Moir 21, an instant film camera that takes the best of both worlds to meet the beauty of film cameras with the convenience of digital photography.

Moir 21 is named after the French word mémoire, which loosely translates to the concept of recordkeeping. Maintaining the integrity of a film camera and resolving the limitations set by current digital cameras, Moir 21 allows for multiple prints of hand-selected photographs. Many photographers who enjoy takings photos on film appreciate the medium for its single-shot takes.

In order to keep that spirit alive, Sarwan and Vishnu designed Moir 21 to automatically erase a photograph only a few minutes after it has been taken. Additionally, the team of designers equipped Moir 21 with a minimal control panel so that modern users can remain close to the clean display of most digital cameras.

The actual photograph won’t be erased, but the photographer will only be able to see it again after been printed. Through the electronic viewfinder (EVF), photographers can change the settings on their cameras to produce different photographs, similar to a film camera.

Speaking to this, the designers suggest, “The controls are fluid and seamless in order to give a smoother and faster experience while shooting and printing.”
