Inside the Barbican’s sci-fi movie wonderland

The best science fiction movies use costumes, models and physical props to sell their vision of the future. Alien, for instance, would be nothing without the compression suits worn by its ill-fated crew outside the Nostromo. From June 3rd, the Barbic...

TARS Cosplay: Walk Like a Bot

We’ve featured LEGO enthusiast Iain Heath aka Ochre Jelly numerous times before, but this time we’re not sharing one of his MOCs. Iain made himself an awesome TARS costume for this year’s Emerald City Comic-Con. It can’t transform or adjust its humor level, but it looks and works a lot like the puppets that actor Bill Irwin used in Interstellar.

Similar to the actual movie props, Iain hides behind the costume and walks with it like a pair of stilts. Unlike the 200lb. movie prop however, Iain chose to make his costume primarily out of wood, using only strips of metal to mimic the robot’s steel case. A wise decision.

A hidden camera lets Iain see what’s in front of him. He also installed an audio system that lets him talk and play sound effects.

Iain won the One to Watch Award at the convention for his awesome costume. Congrats dude!

LEGO Interstellar Model Looks Fantastic

I never got around to seeing Interstellar when it was in theaters. The main reason I didn’t go see it was that some of the previews made it look terrible while some made it look cool. I just couldn’t decide if it was worth my time and money.

I will certainly watch it when it hits video. If you are a fan of the movie, or just a fan of science fiction LEGO builds, check this out. A geek going by the name jp_velociraptor has built a LEGO model of the ship from Interstellar and it looks like it should be an official LEGO kit.

The ship comes with four minifigs and the ship has enough room inside to hold all four of them. Even without having seen the movie, I’d totally buy this kit if it were real, the builder should put it on the LEGO Ideas site.

NASA’s Voyager 1 marks 35th anniversary of its launch, gets photo retrospective in tribute

NASA's Voyager 1 marks its 35th anniversary since launch, gets photo retrospective in tribute

It's hard to believe at times that the Voyager 1 probe is older than many of us reading this article, but it's true. The official first part of NASA's Voyager program launched just over 35 years ago on September 5th, 1977, carrying not just cameras and sensors to capture the trip but the famous Golden Record documenting humanity for any curious aliens. To mark the occasion, Wired has gathered together one heck of a photo album that covers both Voyager 1's trip as well as that of Voyager 2, which technically launched earlier (August 20th the same year) but took a more roundabout route through the solar system. The gallery reminds us of the amazing scenery beyond Mars and puts our tiny blue ball of a planet in perspective; Earth was just a speck at best when photographed late into Voyager 2's journey. Perhaps the best news surrounding the milestone is simply that both Voyager probes are still running. At 11 billion miles from the Sun, Voyager 1 may be on the cusp of interstellar space and easily represents the most distant human object ever made, not to mention a record-setter for signal transmissions. There's even a chance we'll still be hearing back from the probe for its 50th anniversary -- its power could keep it chatting up to roughly 2025.
