Manhattan Skyline Dish Rack

inception dishrack Manhattan Skyline Dish Rack
Taking a cue from the movie Inception, Luca Nichetto created this sweet dish rack that is modeled after the Manhattan skyline. Unlike the movie, New York City won’t fold up onto itself here. Actually on second thought, since it is made of silicone rubber, you can sort of fold it up.

So it does fold up, but unlike Inception, there’s no Leonardo DiCaprio and you won’t feel like you just took acid (unless of course you actually did just take acid and you happen to know Leo. Can we be friends too then? You sound cool). It will however dry off your dishes as they wedge themselves amongst the skyscrapers of Midtown Manhattan. You could also use it as a mail holder or desk organizer like this:

As far as I can tell it’s a pretty accurate scale representation of the buildings in NYC- for reference that stepped building just in front of the letters is 30 Rockefeller Plaza and the pyramidal topped building on the right is World Wide Plaza at 50th and 8th. NYC knowledge bomb dropped, son. These would go great thematically with your set of New York Skyline Chairs and Empire State Building Cat Scratcher. (h/t)

NYC plans free public WiFi expansion in all five boroughs by December 2013

Changing NYC

A handful of neighborhoods in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens and the Bronx will have high-speed WiFi access available for businesses and residents by the end of this year. NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced an expansion today that'll roll out over the next few months, lighting up parts of downtown Brooklyn, lower Manhattan, Harlem and other areas by December 2013. Companies have invested $3.4 million in the new infrastructure, and the city has contributed $900,000 to get the job done. We're still a long way from having a city blanketed in completely free high-speed wireless internet, but with widespread availability in key areas, thousands of residents and smaller businesses should be able to drop their current internet providers before the ball drops to welcome 2014.

‘Here to There’ is a Map of Manhattan – As Described by Strangers

Most people mean well when they give you directions. However, they often give pretty confusing directions that might get you lost when you try to follow them.

Turning these hand-scrawled directions into an art project, though, is New York conceptual artist Nobutaka Aozaki.

Handwritten Map

His piece is called Here to There and his goal is to make a map of Manhattan using handwritten directions and maps that he asked for from strangers.

here to there 2

Aozaki walks around the streets dressed in a souvenir baseball cap while toting a Century 21 shopping bag around, posing as a tourist. He then approaches random people to ask about directions on the part of the map he’s working on.

Handwritten Map2

Aozaki’s goal isn’t to create an accurate map (those already exist and his method doesn’t really lead to this end), but rather, he wants to keep track of his daily routine and create a mapped diary of sorts for that.

So if you happen to live around that area, take a closer look at the people around you. Who knows? You might actually run into Aozaki himself.
