Animal psychology governs the design of this smart pet water dispenser

Have you ever walked into someone’s house or office and they have this cool showpiece with a water fountain? I am talking about those mini zen gardens or crazy shapes that have constant flowing water – it always catches your attention if you see it. That same behavior works for pets too actually, they are more attracted to flowing water than a stagnant water bowl and this award-winning smart pet water dispenser does exactly that!

The PetX smart pet water dispenser designed by Beijing Kitten&Puppy Technology Co. was one of the iF Design Awards 2020 winners and rightfully so – they used the simplest animal behavioral psychology pattern and applied it to a product that worked for pets. Instead of a regular water bowl, this smart water dispenser provides clean running water for pets anytime. Flowing water is better for your pet’s health as still water has a higher chance of becoming contaminated and leading to things like urinary tract infections. Your pets are likely to drink more water due to the innovative and inviting mechanism.

The brand has a patented water flow structure designed for keeping the water clean by filtering impurities and keeping the volume below 30dB. The form of the product has a 7° slope which works universally i.e. pets with different face shapes will be able to comfortably drink water and you won’t have to buy separate bowls for multiple pets. The PetX water dispenser offers access to the IoT and has a voice control feature as well. The water frequency can be automatically switched for day and nighttime use and in case of a power failure, the water tray will still store 100 ml so your pets can remain hydrated. You’ve reached the end of this article and this is a reminder for you and your pet to drink some water.

The PetX smart water dispenser is a winner of the iF Design Award for the year 2020.

Samsung’s robot dog concept lacks puppy eyes but still chases balls!

We are in 2020 and so far it has been one crisis after another. What truly gives me hope is the time I spend with my dog. It is a moment away from the chaos and I often wonder if my dog knows what is happening around us? Do our pets have a sixth sense for disasters as they do for our emotions? Dogs are one of the most intelligent domestic companions to have and our furry friends truly form an inexplicable bond with us. Which leads me to this – what is the future of robot dogs?

Devoid of real feelings but with advancing AI, they will surely be smarter and more efficient. Dog bots will probably be a hybrid of a smart pet and a household assistant, I imagine features like security cameras for the eyes while still being sweet enough to bring you your newspaper and waking you up in the morning. Dog bots may have the benefit of being low maintenance, they won’t require mandatory walks on days when you’re sick or make you panic if you forget leaving their food out during emergencies. And as you can guess, they definitely won’t be troublesome during bath time.

So for the future, it actually sounds like a practical option because AI will be able to mimic a dog’s behavior closely but what about our conditioned behavior towards dogs? This conceptual Samsung dog bot replaces the dog’s features with a screen, so instead of a confused head tilt the face aka screen of the robot will show you a question mark. If the tech giants are to make a robot dog, using a screen as an interactive interface will save a lot more material than using plastic-like materials to replicate the real build of your pet. With the rapid rate at which AI is growing and the conceptual renders show, the dog bot will be able to chase balls and give you a leaping welcome when it senses your arrival. It is interesting how the design is so futuristic and yet when you look at it, you can tell it was made to resemble a dog. You may not even have noticed that the ‘tail’ is missing and yet our brains have evolved to associate emotion with robots.

For most of us, our dogs are considered family. The strong bond teaches us a lot about our own emotions, caring for another in all times, communicating without an actual language and the invincible power of puppy eyes! While technology can make robots so realistic that we start questioning what is real, something like a dog placing his head on your lap can never be replicated by a bot right? Let’s take a pawse (see what I did there?) and think about what life will be like if Samsung were to make a robot dog like this one.

One zip is all it takes to clean this pet house!

I think the only argument you can have over a pet (I have it with my sister all the time!) is who’s going to clean up the hair they shed? It gets everywhere from your clothes to your furniture, and probably even your food. Your furry friend can’t help it, they will shed and it is impossible to get every last hair. But to make it easier, a Korean designer has created this pet house called Zipup which reduces the time and effort you spend cleaning. Also, how sleek does it look? It’s the kind of house a dog called James Bond would have!

The pet house is designed with comfortable fabric and features a lined pattern on the resting pad. It also has a very modern-looking shade inspired by strollers. Zipup has a very simple yet efficient concept to solve this pet-hair-everywhere problem, one zip motion will swipe the hair off the resting pad your pet sits on. Truly, it is that easy and the most amount of hair will be in the pet house so once you get that, 80% of your job is done. The zipper has a round easy grip and you slide it across the line for the hair to collect at the bottom which lets you empty it more conveniently than running around the house with a vacuum (let’s be honest, a broom is no match for a non-hypoallergenic pet). Don’t you just want to get it in all three colors right hair, right now?

This self-cleaning, AI-enabled litter box auto-packs your cat’s waste for disposal!

At CES 2020, we saw just about every product evolve into a smarter version of itself. Let your imagination run wild with everyday items as you imagine each one of them transforms into part robots. One such product that stood out was this modular AI litter box by iKuddle that did a lot more than gather attention and was an Innovation Award Honoree at the world’s largest tech fest – let’s break it down, shall we?

I am going to reveal the best feature first because it truly takes care of the most annoying task when you have a pet – cleaning the litter box. Yes, this AI litter box is self-cleaning! After your cat leaves the box, iKuddle will separate the waste from clean litter, you can initiate this through your app and it will notify you once the cleaning is complete. After that, you can tap the auto-packing button on the app or the litter box and it will seal the waste in a small bag which you can discard at your convenience. This feature makes me feel like we have truly arrived in the new decade!

iKuddle’s litter box also has a deodorizing system with a fully enclosed carbon filter that works for 5 minutes after your cat leaves the box, eliminating 80%-90% of litter box odors. It also comes with a health app that uses the sensing system to monitor the frequency your cat uses the litter box. The data is collected and displayed as a bar chart on the app, letting you know if your cat is in good shape. This smart litter box is eco-conscious and reduces litter usage by 30% saving you time and money.

Unlike other self-cleaning litter boxes, this AI-enabled pet product has detachable components such as the scooper and litter box enclosure which makes it easy to maintain. It also has a plug-in charging cable with a battery that lasts up to two weeks so you can travel with your cat and be stress-free. iKuddle makes me want to get a cat just so I have a reason to buy a smart litter box for it!

The Dog House Sofa by Seungji Mun is one of my favorite pieces. The sofa enables your pet and you to lounge about together, while also retaining your respective personal space. The wooden armrest doubles up as a cozy hideaway for your pets. It’s a private section where they can laze around, with an opening in the armrest, allowing them to sneakily cuddle up to you!

Product designer Onurhan Demir created a collection of premium pet furniture, called Weelywally. And the mini pet houses are an absolute crowd pleaser! Combining cloth, metal, and wood, the mini houses are a fresh change from the boring old pet homes! Using wooden rods and a slatted structure, each of these pet homes can be easily dismantled for flat storage.

The patent-pending Ray Harness is a utility design, designed by Jay Sae Jung Oh, that merges a leash and a harness to create one exceptional product. The process of attaching and detaching the harness onto your pet brings to mind all the times you may have opened and closed a rucksack!

The Hoonico Moomoo Bag by Sunghoon Park seems like an ordinary shoulder bag with an adjustable strap, but one end of the Moomoo Bag features an open patch through which your pet can wiggle their heads out. A little peeking hole for them to look out at the world, and stay connected with you, without feeling claustrophobic and anxious in the carrier bag.

mookie_pet_bowl_1

Mookkie’s AI Pet Bowl uses facial recognition to lock and unlock the feeding bowl! A wide-angle lens captures the entire bowl as well as the animal approaching it. Artificial intelligence scans the face of the pet and determines whether it’s eaten or not. If you have multiple pets, and that particular pet has eaten, the feeding bowl shuts! And if not, it allows the pet to hog away.

The Nestle Purina Lead is a modular lead. Crafted from stainless steel, the lead features a quick-release system, that allows you to open up the loop in a jiffy. Anchor it around a pole and then open the T connection or slide it along the rope, to increase or decrease the size of the loop.
