This book is literally a planetarium, a guitar, and a phone amplifier!

Kelli Anderson’s books are proof that there’s a tonne of things you can do with paper and imagination. After the wild success of This Book Is A Camera, a book that literally turned into a functional pinhole camera, Brooklyn-based artist/designer and tinkerer Kelli Anderson’s next book explores the mysteries of the physical world with more paper-based experiments. This Book Is A Planetarium features a pop-up planetarium that you can activate with your phone’s flashlight, a spiralgraph that teaches children the infinite wonders of geometric art, a stringed instrument that lets you understand how acoustic chambers work and how strings make sound, a passive amplifier that uses a cone to magnify the sound from your phone, and a perpetual calendar that allows you to view the Gregorian calendar of any given year!

A wonderful gift for children (even the ones at heart) with an inclination towards curiosity, This Book Is A Planetarium allows kids to unlock small mysteries of the universe, and prompts them to question phenomena around them, helping them expand their knowledge base and eventually their wings!

Otherworldly Architecture

planetarium_cover

This proposal for the 2016 Kırsehir Planetarium Competition tells a story with its architecture – one of space and crashing meteors! The main structure itself resembles a heavenly body that’s just buried itself into our planet at a thousand miles per second. Amphitheater style seating is formed where the original impact would have occurred. The surrounding public spaces also features elements like green trees and seating that are placed randomly as if they’re debris from the crash. Inside, individuals and families will find captivating worlds outside our own in an educational and welcoming atmosphere.

Darth Vader Homestar Projector: The Light Side of the Dark Side of the Force

Sega has been making their Homestar planetariums for a number of years, and has finally created one that might just be worthy of a place in my geek sanctuary, with the release of their new Darth Vader Homestar projector.

Shaped like Vader’s iconic helmet, a flap on top conceals a small planetarium projector that splashes about 10,000 tiny stars and planetary bodies on your walls and ceiling. You’ll also see Vader’s TIE fighter floating among the stars. Though I’m surprised there’s no Death Star out there in the heavens.  For that, you actually need to go with the R2-D2 Homestar.

You can the Darth Vader Homestar projector over on Amazon Japan for ¥4,200 (~$45 USD) now, but if you absolutely must have one outside of Japan, you can find it over at the Japan Trend Shop for about double that price.
