FTW! Space Invaders Tatami Rug

Space Invaders Tatami Rug

Once upon a time, there was a video game probably more famous for its arcade version called Space Invaders. Years later, it remains a highly addictive creation that looks great on a number of items, including a wonderful Space Invaders rug.

As someone who is a big fan of the game (I was born four years after it came out) who played it before his fourth birthday on his Commodore 64, it was only natural for me to, at some point in my life, decorate my room by putting Space Invaders stickers all over the wall.

And the Space Invaders Tatami rug fills up the same hole in the soul for anyone else who loves the game, maybe for its playability or possibly for the design and chic of it all, looking futuristic and nostalgic with a strong retro vibe all at once.

Unless you have a pet or infant, both likely to throw up on the rug on a weekly (or daily) basis, this is a perfect way to declare to the world you’re a fan of the game, or simply appreciate some of its greatness. The rug, which comes with a red, white or black background (screen color if it sits better with your imagination) simply looks great. It’s not just to impress people who know their s*** when it comes to classic video games.

If you’ve fallen in-love with this rug (and it’s hard not to), it’s available for $232.

Space Invaders Recreated in Real Life

If you haven’t seen Immersion yet, it’s a new series by Rooster Teeth. The idea is that they recreate elements of popular video games in real life. It’s pretty awesome. The latest episode has members of the team bringing the classic arcade video game Space Invaders to life.

space_invaders_1zoom in

They did an amazing job too. They had a number of people dress up as the Space Invaders and march in unison, tossing paint balloons, while on the other end, some guys are moving back and forth and attempting to shoot them down with NERF darts. All I can say is, after watching this I NEVER want to encounter that UFO again. Put some clothes on!

This is a fun video. fans of the game will want to check it out.

Space Invaders now available for Android Wear

Space Invaders Smartwatch 1

The old yet beloved Space Invaders is now available for smartwatches running Android. Meet your future time waster for Android Wear!

After the last few updates to Android Wear, Google’s lightweight OS for wearable devices, the retro classic Space Invaders from 1978 arrives to smartwatches everywhere. The beloved classic from the arcades can now be played on Android Wear devices anywhere, such as a waiting room, public transportation… and the bathroom, the place where it matters the most. Obviously.

This new version of the game keeps the old pixel art aesthetic, but is completely revamped to be played without any physical buttons and uses the touch screens featured in smartwatches to both display and play the game with terrific results. The game plays fluidly and has a fantastic response which will impress even the button purists – at least, once you get used to playing in such a tiny screen.

The simplicity is Space Invader’s biggest selling point, and once installed we only need to press the screen to start the game, and the aliens will appear to attempt and destroy our ship which we control with our finger, and shoots automatically or each time we press it. As players progress through the game, they will not only earn points, but also face harder challenges, just like with the original game.

This app is only available for Android Wear devices, and can be downloaded for free at Google’s Play Store. It weighs only 7.5 MB. It’s pretty entertaining, and above all, very addictive. If you have already tried it out, be sure to tell us about it in the comments section.

Download the game at Google Play.

Pacapong: Pac-Man, Space Invaders and Pong in One

Certain games stand the test of time. Like Pac-Man, Space Invaders and Pong for instance. So why not mash them all together and create a game called Pacapong? Why not indeed.

pacapongzoom in

This two-player game is basically a Pac-Man maze with Pong paddles on both sides, and Space Invaders dropping down around them. You use your paddle to fling Pac-Man through the maze, between the ghosts and onto your opponents paddle. After you fling him between the paddles, you steer Pac-Man through the maze and around the ghosts. At the same time, you have to shoot the Space Invaders as they surface. Oh and there are also some stray Donkey Kong barrels. I love it. It’s pretty messed up and pretty awesome at the same time.

The game is available for Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows, and can be downloaded for free. You know that others are going to be mashing together old games now too and I can’t wait to see the results.

Space Invaders Ring: Sterling Silver, Not Pew Pew Pewter

This awesome Space Invaders ring puts the 8-bit aliens around one of your fingers. Hopefully not your button mashing trigger finger, because you know they will try to stop you from shooting their friends.

space_invaders_1zoom in

It comes in your choice of Sterling Silver or 9ct. Gold. Either way you have an awesome ring full of aliens. I’m a little sad that it doesn’t have the UFO in the center, but that’s just me. I always like to go for the extra points and go for the high score. This ring comes from Etsy artist Uproar and starts at $55(USD).

They have some other cool gaming jewelry too, but for my money, this is the coolest.

Charity Arcade Accepts Any Coin Currency as Tokens: Insert Care

If you’ve ever gone abroad you probably had spare coins from the country you visited. You can change it back to your country’s currency or keep it as a memento, but more often than not they’ll just end up stashed in your drawer, “for when you go back.” Sweden’s airport agency Swedavia and the Red Cross have a brilliant suggestion: use those foreign coins as arcade tokens.

charity_arcade_by_swedavia_and_red_cross_1zoom in

Red Cross and Swedavia’s Charity Arcades are currently found at Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Göteborg Landvetter Airport. These interactive donation boxes will let you play Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga or Space Invaders in exchange for any coin. As you may have guessed, all of the proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross.

Add Super Hexagon, Battletoads and I Wanna Be the Guy to the Charity Arcade and they’ll have enough money to end world hunger within an hour. That and destroyed cabinets.

Space Invaders Cushion: Huggable Alien

Space Invaders was my favorite game back in the day and was one of the first games to frustrate me. You all remember those gaming sessions where you end up accusing the game of cheating and tossing your joystick around the room. I know I shot that shuffling alien, I know I did.

si-2zoom in

If you have some fond memories of Space Invaders you might want to put a bit of 8-bit style on your couch or bed with this Space Invaders Alien Crab 3D cushion. It’s only offered in pink, which might be a deal breaker for some guys.

si-1zoom in

The cushion measures 17.75″ x 13″ x 4″ and would go perfectly with your Space Invaders Coasters. You can pick up the pillow for $29.99(USD) at ThinkGeek now.
