The best designs from Makerbot’s NYCxDesign Challenge

makerbot_nyc_1

3D printing may have reached every household, but there’s still time for it to take off as a design tool. Designers use printers today to validate concepts that will be mass produced using other, more traditional methods of manufacturing, but using the 3D printer as a basis to create designs is rare, and with Makerbot spearheading the movement, well worth the effort. To celebrate this year’s NYCxDesign, MakerBot hand-picked 17 New York City designers and put them to the test of designing and prototyping an object to improve daily life. Armed with a Makerbot Replicator and a few rolls of filament, the designers were given 5 weeks to create products that solve problems, showcase creativity, and champion the process of 3D printing. The results were put on display at Makerbot’s headquarters in Brooklyn and here are a few that stood out.

1. The Flyer Birdhouse by Nicholas Baker (above) is a simple yet contemporary birdhouse that can easily be fastened to utility poles via screws, nails, or zip-ties. Its design resembles traditional birdhouses, while transitioning into a curved surface that allows it to be fastened against the curved surface of a utility pole. Easy to install, the Flyer Birdhouse not only gives birds a place to stay, it also brightens up the neighborhood with its quirky yet alluring aesthetic!

2. The MUJI pen holder by James Connors turns penstand into pen-rack, hanging your pens on display, letting you easily pick one and begin writing right away. The cap can be docked on the side of the pen’s attachment, while the loop isn’t just for hanging, it’s perfect for looping around your finger and fidget-spinning too!

makerbot_nyc_3
3. The Cup With a Hole Through It by Kyle Laidlaw is a great example of a product that champions 3D printing. The design can’t be produced using any traditional molding method other than 3D printing. The simple cup comes with a hole/channel running through it, allowing you to segregate the cup space into two halves, while the channel itself can be used to stash an item too. Perfect for the kitchen or bathroom, the cup also features a clever texture optimized for 3D printing that hides printing defects defects and is easy to clean and grip while wet!

makerbot_nyc_4
4. The oVo Clip-on Wheels by Juhi Solanki features a clip and rotating wheels that make mounting and wheeling of printed foam-core boards easy. The clip and wheels are both made from PLA, a biodegradable thermoplastic capable of high tension, allowing the clip to flex and accommodate boards of varying thickness. The rotating wheels are designed in a single piece and have rotating parts that are created using print-in-place mechanics.

makerbot_nyc_5
5. The 3DBK Wall Organizer by Will Haude is a universal hold-it-all storage system that lets you stash, place, hang, your belongings, as well as decorate your area with a touch of greenery. It features an easily installable cleat, an acoustic amplifier for your phone, slots to hold carabiners, and is modular to support hooks or trays.

makerbot_nyc_6
6. The Super Hooks Adapter and Socket by Lizz Hill transforms your boring looking metal hooks into something more imaginative. The hooks are load-bearing, and are designed to look mythical/mystical and add a dash of wonder and excitement to an otherwise boring looking wall.

makerbot_nyc_7
7.The BLADESNAP by Yuval Philipson gives a common blade a fresh avatar by not just giving it a handle that’s ergonomic and comfortable to hold, it also elevates the blade by integrating a simple blade-guard, and borrowing a spring from a pen to create a retracting mechanism for the blade, making an ordinary product easier to use and safer too.

makerbot_nyc_8
8. The Dustpan & Brush Reimagined by Logan Good and Alyssa Burris is a rather inventive product that uses 3D printing’s intricacies as a design detail. The dustpan and brush plug into one another perfectly, but what’s incredible is the fact that the bristles on the brush are actually created through 3D printing too, and are integrated into the brush in a way that makes the entire brush a single-part product!

makerbot_nyc_9
9. The Portable Photobooth by Deren Guler is a neat little mount that lets you click perfect overhead shots, making it a cheap yet great addition to your smartphone photography arsenal for your social media page. It mounts to your phone’s popsocket (if you have the accessory mounted to the back) to secure your phone in place and click images without your phone toppling over.

makerbot_nyc_10
10. The Trouble Light by Dan Grossman models itself around a regular incandescent bulb and socket, turning rudimentary lighting fixture into a pretty neat torch that also doubles up as a night-light. The torch comes with a handle that fits perfectly into your grip, while the grill around the bulb can be used as a stand to mount the torch on the conical base, while the other end has the wire coming out of it that goes into a plug-point.

makerbot_nyc_11
11. The Primitive Keychains by JungSoo Park and Adam Wrigley is printed around magnets, allowing your keychain to easily attach to metal surfaces around your house, eliminating the need to have a key-bowl or a key-rack. These tiny yet capable designs fit within your pocket quite comfortably, and stick to your fridge or metal doors just as easily too.

makerbot_nyc_13
12. The Great American Clip Hanger (GACH) by Rama Chorpash combines several hangers together to turn them into one thicker superhanger that’s ideal for holding the shape of (and the weight of) blazers and jackets. The GACH works well with heavy jeans and strap dresses too, while giving a renewed life to cheap hangers that usually find their way into landfills.

Celebrating World Industrial Design Day with Top 10 Designs from A’ Design Award!

wiid_adesign_2018_layout

Every year, the June 29th marks the World Industrial Design Day, a day we celebrate to commemorate the work done in the field of Industrial Design and also a day that we set a universal agenda for the year moving forward. This year’s agenda being “Design’s Impact on Good Health and Well-Being” we’re doing our part to highlight and showcase 10 designs that fit well into that agenda of uplifting humanity’s standard of living, or being a creative breakthrough in the medical field, or just designs that get one to think and foster a healthy mentality on several issues.

These designs are all winners of A’ Design Awards over the years, catering to the various categories within the awards program and competition. Unlike most design competitions, the A’ Design Award and Competition (and we’ve said this before) isn’t about the certificate and trophy. It stands for pushing designs beyond their concept and rendering stages to harness its full potential. The A’ Design Award And Competition sets itself to be the one place where good design regardless of discipline is rewarded, highlighted, and showcased not only to the world, but helped taken forward. With a massive international interdisciplinary judging panel, the A’ Design Award covers all categories of design from Architecture to Electronics, from Medical and Safety Equipment, to Jewelry, and from Furniture to Social Design. Winners across these categories not only receive their award in the form of a trophy and certificate, they’re also entitled to a PR Campaign, Publication across multiple online design platforms, a Proof Of Creation Certificate, and even the option to sell those designs, allowing your work to actually cross over the realm of the concept and be used and appreciated by users and moreover, change lives.

Which is why if you have a life-changing idea, register it for the A’ Design Awards this year! Registrations for the award are now open, and are free for all our readers. Register and upload your design today for a free evaluation and watch as your design project goes on to influence minds and change lives!

YD Handpicks for World Industrial Design Day: 10 Award Winning Designs that Positively Impact Health and Well-Being

01. Textura Braille Smartphone by Isa Verde

textura_phone_1
The Textura Smartphone comes with a dynamic surface on top that translates text into braille. Much more simple and intuitive to use than a regular smartphone with an audio-aid, the Textura helps the visually impaired to use a phone in a way that comes naturally to them. The slim and sleek phone comes with controls on the side (because you’re perpetually touching the screen), and even has an audio jack built in for when you want to use earphones!

02. DuoSkin by Cindy Hsin-Liu Kao Dab ECG Holter Patch by Adam Miklosi

adesign_inspirational_1617_17

adesign_inspirational_1617_18
DuoSkin presents the future of body-art that just doesn’t serve the purpose of art, but involves an element of interaction design too. The thin metal foil laid out on the skin has the ability to conduct electricity or even act as a sensor, becoming one of the first fashion-oriented biotech products, not just serving a medical purpose, but even going as far as becoming interfaces for the products we use. Imagine being able to type out messages on your skin, or unlock your door with a pattern drawn on your fore-arm, or initiating a 911 emergency call using a secret button placed against your skin. The possibilities are literally endless!

03. Art4leg 3D Printed Prosthetic by Tomas Vacek

adesign_201617_win_2
The Art4Leg remains a personal favorite just because it makes prosthetics look less like badly designed plasticky versions of human limbs and more like pieces of art that a disabled person wouldn’t mind showing off rather than concealing. 3D printed from top to bottom, the leg comes with beautiful organic patterns and a hollow design that not only is capable of taking vertical stress of standing and walking but also is capable of dispelling any weird looks people may give you. If anything, they’re going to look at it with awe!

04. Dab ECG Holter Patch by Adam Miklosi

dab_ecg_1
A winner from last year’s competition, the Dab ECG holter patch sits on your chest, constantly monitoring and recording your heart activity, while truly being as invisible and distraction-free as any good medical wearable must be. Sitting on the skin via a gel patch, the Dab is reusable, unlike most disposable ECGs and charges separately in its own wireless charging dock. A perfect embodiment of Rams’s design advice that good design should be as little design as possible.

05. Meditation Seat by Gao Fenglin

meditation_seat_6
Gao Fenglin’s Meditation Seat encourages you to sit cross legged, making your body and mind healthy. The seat comes with an unusual design that naturally gets you to sit with your legs crossed in a meditative pose, allowing your posture to be corrected, spine kept straight, and making sure you’re physiologically as well as psychologically healthy.

06. Lw-01 by YeQuan Liu

adw_callentries_2017_2
Designed to make sure you never forget or misplace your medicine, the Lw-01 integrates your pill bottle into the cap of your regular water bottle. Whenever you take your bottle out to have a sip, you’re reminded to follow your medical routine, and the fact that your pills are attached to your bottle allows you to take your medication without having to look for a glass of water!

07. Tentative Post Disaster Tent by Dr. Hakan Gürsu

adesign_hakan_4

adesign_hakan_5
Inspired after earthquakes in Turky, by the need to have a shelter that can be rapidly deployed and set up, Hakan developed the Tentative Post Disaster Tent. Designed to comfortably house two adults, or even a small family of 3-4, the tent comes in a collapsible flat-pack design that makes for easy transportation. In fact, a single semi can carry north of 24 of these units. The tent comes with collapsible furniture all stored inside it and can be assembled (by means of a metal exo-structure) in a matter of minutes.

08. Espire Full Face Gas Mask by Carlos Schreib

espire_02
The Espire Full Face Gas Mask is exactly what safety masks should look like. Not only does it purify the air going into your nose and mouth, it even guards your eyes from smoke, dust, and harmful chemicals. What’s more, it rather cleverly creates a barrier between the breathing zone and the viewing zone so you don’t have to worry about your visor fogging up with your breath!

09. Brave Jet Syringe by Ilmo Ahn, Jisu Kim & Juyeon Baek & SeonwooPyo

adesign_1516_winners_15
Dispelling any fear around injections, the Brave Jet Syringe gamifies the vaccination process, turning the syringe jet into a plane, allowing kids to look at it as not a pointy, fearful, medical product, but a good-guy fighter jet that kills diseases!

10. SPH Smart Prosthetic Hand by Young Jo In

sph_1
The SPH, or Smart Prosthetic Hand is just practical from top to bottom. A mechanized prosthetic hand lets you go about your day to day tasks, while a smartphone is literally integrated into the back of your palm, letting you own and use a smartphone without worrying about having to occupy one hand holding one, forget/lose one, or accidentally drop one. Besides, it literally puts the power of the entire internet in your hands!

Determined to be more than just a trophy and a name, the A’ Design Award and Competition wants to be the international standard for good design and innovative and creative work. The A’ Design Awards and Competition, as I’ve said before, not only recognizes good design, but gives it the good exposure it needs and deserves. Their mission statement has always been to provide growth and support to not just the designer, but to the design itself too.

We’ve hand-picked fifteen of our favorites from this year’s list of winners spanning categories such as Product Design, Lighting Design, Architecture, Furniture, Medical, and Social Design. YD Handpicks: 15 Winning Designs from A’ Design Awards 2017-18

01. Meditation Seat by Gao Fenglin
meditation_seat_6
Gao Fenglin’s Meditation Seat can only be sat on in a certain way, directing the user’s behavior and encouraging a seating position that keeps your back upright, and your legs folded inward. Designed to promote physical and mental fitness, the Meditation Seat actually makes sitting healthier!

02. Minimbike by ozestudi
minimbike
Minimbike’s sculpted organic balanced design stems from the need to be aesthetic and not overtly functional. Not weighed down by concerns like shock absorption or aerodynamics, the stationary bike’s form is just purely desirable, inviting you to come and use it!

03. Dab ECG Holter Patch by Adam Miklosi
dab_ecg_1
Small but effective, the Dab ECG holter patch sits on your chest, constantly monitoring and recording your heart activity, while truly being as invisible and distraction-free as any good medical wearable must be. Sitting on the skin via a gel patch, the Dab is reusable, unlike most disposable ECGs and charges separately in its own wireless charging dock. A perfect embodiment of Rams’s design advice that good design should be as little design as possible.

04. Croz D.I.Y Digital Camera by Calvin Sio
croz_diy_camera_4
The Croz camera helps bring a do-it-yourself quality to consumer electronics, something we see little of nowadays. It comes with a bare-bones aesthetic that’s the result of stripping away everything unnecessary (even a fully molded outer casing) in exchange for the lens module, a circuit board, battery, viewfinder, and a cleverly designed laser-cut piece of acrylic bent into shape to form a transparent cover that lets you peer right into your camera’s innards, bringing a sense of curiosity and involvement in the photography process.

05. Joseph Felt Chair Seating by Lothar Windels
joseph_felt_chair
Quirky, clever, and wrinkly enough to project a semblance of comfortability, the Joseph Felt Chair is entirely made from sheets of felt layered together and folded before being fastened together with stainless steel fasteners. The chair looks playful, has an intriguing appeal where you can literally see the folds forming the chair, and definitely looks inviting to both adults and children!

06. Solar Egg Public Sauna by Futurniture and Bigert & Bergström
solar_egg
A symbol of youth, nourishment, and vitalization, the egg was perhaps the most perfect form for the Solar Egg Public Sauna. With stainless golden mirror sheeting on the outside, and a faceted form, the sauna mirrors the serene landscape around it, but looks as golden as the sun does (a fitting metaphor, because it’s so hot on the inside). The inside has a wooden construction with a heart-shaped sauna stove at the center, radiating heat, and making for a fitting design detail for something that looks like an egg on the outside!

07. PIXIO Magnetic Сonstruction Set by Ivan Khalus and Oleh Berezovskyi
pixio_1
Designed to be used like pixel-based play dough, the Pixio are magnetic pixels that snap together, creating complex shapes and figures like Lego, but without the hassle of plugging and unplugging pieces, or the pain of inevitably stepping on a loose lego piece sometime later in the day. With an appeal that can only be described as Minecraft in real life, and an absolutely delicious set of available colors, the Pixio is a perfect tool to let your mind roam free!

08. Cocoon Lounge Chair by Tim Kwok
cocoon_chair_1
Part recliner, part rocking chair, part hammock, the Cocoon must be an absolute stress-busting treat to lie on! Comfortable, thanks to its netted base, the Cocoon slowly rocks to and fro, giving you the relaxed posture of a recliner/hammock, with the meditative rocking of a rocking chair. A guaranteed 11/10 would want to sit on this.

09. Tab4 Home Assistant by Lenovo Design Group
tab4_1
Our love for the Tab4 stems from its clever design strategy. Using one product (stone) to hit two proverbial birds, the Tab4 is a smart speaker and a tablet, designed to be used together or even independently. Given the rise of smart speakers in homes today, Lenovo’s smart speaker is a sure-shot hit, since it comes with a free screen/tablet too. And it’s a hit for Lenovo, because it means being able to bolster tablet sales in what I can only describe as an Android tablet sale slump. Clever, eh!?

10. Kulms Stackable Chair by Daisuke Nagatomo and Minnie Jan
kulms_chair
The chair’s clever two dimensional design remains stable, thanks to the fact that it rests on three points, remains easy to produce, because you can easily shape wooden ply into 2D curves, and is made to be stackable, allowing it to do something most plastic chairs consider an advantage over their wooden counterparts. Useful, easy to produce, aesthetically simple, yet with loads of character, the Kulms chair could be easily spotted from the opposite end of a room.

11. Jal Lamp by Mos
jal_just_another_lamp_layout
Designed to look like a martini-esque hourglass with an ambient lightbulb in it, the JAL Lamp’s beauty arises from its simplicity and its ability to be whatever you want it to be. The glass comprises two conical containers in the hourglass shape, that can be used to store anything, making the lamp a rather versatile piece of decor (rather than ‘just another lamp’!). The bulb can be oriented either way, allowing you to use the lamp in any orientation that you’d like. A nice combination of simplicity, elegance, and a minimal beauty that one would associate with Scandinavian or Japanese design.

12. Print to Build Furniture Joint by Gellert Olle
print_to_build
Putting his desktop 3D printer to good use, Gellert Olle designed the Print To Build, a joinery set that could be used to fasten two pieces of plywood together in a variety of orientations, creating furniture that comprised literally two types of components. Just wood and plastic. The resultant furniture is basic, but clean looking, and flat-packs so efficiently, it would probably occupy less than 10% of its space when assembled.

13. EXEO Gaming Controller by Sushant Vohra
exeo_2_1
The EXEO’s a personal favorite for bringing modularity to games in a way that completes experiences, allowing you to play multiple types of games and build the motion-sensing controllers you need for it, rather than simply play with that boring old Joypad. Designed around three components, a gun, a baton, and a puck, users can create much more complex weapons/instruments, from steering wheels to archery equipment, allowing for a gameplay experience that’s MUCH more authentic than a standard joypad or remote.

14. Karekla Chair by Phebos Xenakis
karekla_chair_layout
Made out of hard plywood, but designed to be ‘comfortable’, the Karekla Chair comprises a seat made from plywood with vertical cuts in them. Sit on the seat and the plywood members bend to your weight to assume the curvature of your body, feeling less like a hard wooden surface and more flexible and comfortable like wickerwork. A curved metal rod sits underneath the vertically cut plywood seat to provide a support for it, preventing it from bending more than the desired amount. Get off the seat and it returns to its flat position again!

15. Braille Ebook Reader by Brian studio
braille_book_reader
With the ability to turn text to braille in real-time, the Braille Ebook Reader is truly the Kindle for the visually impaired. Sporting a large dot-matrix panel with individual dots dynamically raising to form braille patterns, a scanner on the back that actually scans book pages, and controls that enable the visually impaired to configure and fine-tune their reading experience, the Braille Ebook Reader scans and saves bodies of text from newspapers, books, and magazines, allowing the blind to read from readily available printed material. What’s more, it even connects to the internet to access and download ebooks for reading too!

YD Handpicks: Your complete caffeine-kick kit!

ydtalks_caffeine_layout

The third most popular beverage in the world after tea and beer, coffee to some people is almost as important as the air we breathe. A dose of coffee powers you through the day like an invisible pair of batteries… and this round-up ensures you’re super-charged throughout the entire day. Starting from the most basic of processes like the roasting to the actual drinking of coffee, we’ve covered the entire cycle of the coffee brewing affair, with a surprise product right at the end. Scroll through to completely uplift your coffee game.

01. Kelvin Coffee Roaster by IA Collaborative
We first start with the roasting of the coffee. Roasting your own coffee lets you consume it at its freshest, and the Kelvin was designed exactly for that. Rather than buying beans that were roasted months in advance and have lost their potency, Kelvin connects you to bean distributors who deliver green coffee beans to your home, while the device itself roasts your bean to that beautiful brown, which you can then proceed to grind and brew into the freshest cup of coffee ever!

02. Hiku Coffee Grinder by Kanso Coffee
After your coffee beans are roasted to that absolutely beautiful shade of umber, it must be ground to a powder, so as to allow proper infusion. The Hiku takes precise grinding to another level with a grinder inspired by camera lenses. With markings on the side, you can calibrate the coarseness or fineness of your coffee grounds, depending on the kind of brew you want. Hiku’s patented axle and burr system are so rock solid, they don’t deviate in the slightest as they’re crushing the beans, resulting in a grind that’s of immaculate consistency.

03. Kruve Coffee Sieve by Michael Vecchiarelli
Kruve takes Hiku’s mission a step further and allows you to, at a micron level, sieve your coffee. The size of your coffee ground along with its brew time decides how your brew tastes, so making sure you’ve got a consistent grind is key. The minute you have larger, coarser particles mixing with finer ones, you lose out on your brew remaining consistent… resulting in a brew that’s acidic and bitter, because some particles are under-brewed and some over-brewed. Kruve’s sieve has a two-stage process, allowing you to trap the larger particles on the top, and the smallest particles in a tray at the bottom, leaving you with a perfect, consistent grind in the middle. The sieves are so remarkably accurate, they work on a level of a few microns… and experts say that the difference in taste is noticeable. “Sieving is believing” amirite?

04. Minipresso by Wacaco
Congratulations on perfecting your grind! Now it’s brewing time… The Minipresso takes care of that in a profile that’s small enough to slide into your backpack’s bottle holder. The tiny little brewer lets you brew coffee from your own grounds, and there’s even a version that lets you just use Nespresso pods. With a pressure chamber that allows you to build up a high pressure, the Minipresso allows you to pump hot water through your grounds, resulting in fresh-brewed creamy, rich coffee that you can either consume in espresso form or turn into a cup of black coffee or a latte by adding to it. The Minipresso is tiny enough to let you brew your coffee anywhere, and even comes with its own cup, so you’ve got literally nothing to worry about. Just sip away!

05. Newton Lever Espresso Maker by Hayden Maunsell
Want something more rustic, manual, and quirky? Essentially the most simplified version of a french press, the Newton is effortless because it uses a Type 2 Lever to reduce the amount of effort needed to extract every single bit of goodness from your grounds. Start with a nice hot cup, place and press your coffee grounds into the lower chamber of the Newton. Screw the lower chamber into place and pour hot water into the upper chamber before pulling the lever up. Then delight in the hipster routine of pumping the water through the grounds and out the bottom into your toasty hot coffee cup. The entire process is fun, non-electric, and effortless. Depending on how hard you press down on the lever, and how coarse or fine your coffee grounds are, you should be able to perfect the art of making coffee that’s a 100% product of your work!

06. & 07. Ember’s Self Heating Mugs by Ammunition/Robert Brunner for Ember
The mug that heats up your drink for you, the Ember is quite a revolutionary bit of tech. Available initially in a travel-mug format before moving to the traditional mug-shaped design, the Ember lets you set your temperature preference, and then it keeps your beverage at exactly that temperature… because coffee that’s too hot is physically undrinkable, and coffee that’s at room temperature is too disgraceful to drink, but coffee at the correct temperature feels less like a beverage and more like nature giving you a hug!

08. Cafepress by Kinto
The Kinto is for those who want to cut out the coffee machine from their coffee-brewing cycle. Made for those coffee-addicts who don’t like the idea of having to wait for their mug, the Kinto does the brewing and filtering within the cup itself! Just pour coffee grounds in and top it off with the hot water. Let the brew rest for a minute and then insert the filter that sits flush against the handle when inserted. The filter acts like a press, compressing your grounds/leaves to the bottom of the cup, leaving just the aromatic flavorful liquid on the top for you to sip, directly from the mug you brewed your drink in!

With the caffeine equivalent of one cup in a single tooth-brush dabful, Power claims it can give you an energy boost within just the first 10 seconds of brushing (it tastes like mint though, so your mouth feels fresh). 03. Kindle Oasis by Amazon
There have been quite a few debates between book lovers and tech lovers about what’s superior. The e-book reader or the actual physical book. The Kindle Oasis is the winning argument for the e-book reader community because you can now read books in the pool, bathtub, at the beach, and even in the rain (if your tinder bio contains the words sapiosexual and pluviophile). The first and only Kindle with an IPx8 rating, the device is pretty much waterproof. It comes with an e-ink screen that feels just as natural type on paper, and two buttons on the side that allow you to flip/toggle between pages, and is probably the only way you can read books underwater.

04. Vitrima by Fantem
What if you could kick back, and watch footage from your last holiday in 3D? That would be pretty cool, wouldn’t it? What if you could film 3D with your regular GoPro? Vitrima is just a simple attachment that lets one single lens film two separate left and right channels. Using a clever arrangement of mirrors, the Vitrima can film 3D content on your regular GoPro and watch it back in 3D either on your 3D ready TV screen or even a VR headset!

05. Soundgrenade+ by B A S U
The Sound Grenade+ acts as a criminal deterrent by blasting loud sound waves. You can use it as a tripwire, tying the pin and base via thread, or happily hang it on your backpack, for safety reasons. When you feel threatened, pop the pin out (this would happen if someone triggered the tripwire too) and the sound grenade lets out a shrill siren (which works under water too), effectively alarming the culprit. This incredibly loud and effective safety thumb-drive shaped safety alarm will ring continuously for 30 minutes if the pin on top gets removed, unless said pin is replaced on the base. Rugged and waterproof, the Sound Grenade+ is heavily recommended for travelers, students, and women, effectively replacing items like the rape whistle. It can even provide an instant alarm for people outdoors against predators or attackers.

07. OIO Amp by Gregg Davis
The OIO Amp puts two incredibly sleek vibrating acoustic panel speakers on either side of your iPad in a format that seems like a TV and Home Theater set-up, but made portable. Unlike every external wireless speaker that is designed as an independent unit, the OIO Amp was built to integrate with the tablet, becoming a singular unit that can be opened out anywhere, and then folded and stored away for another Netflix binge-watching session. That’s right. The OIO Amp turns your iPad into an iCinema!

YD Handpicks: 10 inpsiring works from A’ Design Awards 2016-17!

When it comes to award programs, I’m no silent advocate. It’s the one place that houses all the best designs, adding new projects to its list every year. As a designer myself, I just love scrolling through galleries, seeing what my contemporaries are up to. Plus, you never know when inspiration strikes. The mind works like a creative bank. The more you put in, the more it generates… and by that theory, just scrolling through a feed of incredible design is sure to spark your mind with creative genius. It’s worked for me!

A’ Design Award and Competition’s winner galleries are exceptional because they’re so incredibly diverse. No matter what you find interesting, there’s a category of winning designs for you, ranging all the way from Transportation, to Medical, to Architecture, Consumer Electronics, Toy Design, to even more niche categories like Social Design, Futuristic Design, and Differently-Abled Design (just think of a category, and it’ll be there). The aim of A’ Design’s diverse approach is to house all incredible works and projects under one single umbrella, and therefore be the go-to awards program for any and all creative work.

The point I’m trying to make is, the idea is to be inspired by looking at great work and then do great work yourself to inspire others, therefore helping the wheel of creativity and great design turn. In fact, here’s a set of 10 rather amazing pieces of work I found to be pretty inspirational. Just looking at these designs will get those creative juices flowing, and when they do, develop them into products that will garner attention, gather awards, and sit proudly in your portfolios, and on our site too! Go ahead… Scroll through!

YD Handpicks: 10 Inspirational designs from the A’ Design Award and Competition 2016-17 Winners

01. Flike by Maform
adesign_inspirational_1617_1

adesign_inspirational_1617_2
Undoubtedly James-Bond-ish in its approach, the Flike is a Flying Bike that puts a man on a tri-copter drone. Designed with an electric/hybrid power train, the Flike can go up to speeds of 100 km/h and can reach a height of 30 meters. These limits were set electronically, so as to maximize safety, and Maform says they’ve built working prototypes already… hmmm!

02. Silhouette Collection by Libero Rutilo

adesign_inspirational_1617_5

adesign_inspirational_1617_6
Libero Rutilo’s work with PET bottles is nothing if not exemplary. Here’s a look back at the Leaf made by Libero that everyone instantly loved! The Silhouette collection shown here, gives PET bottles a second life by cladding them in intricately printed exoskeletons, turning them from boring pieces of plastic, to the most interesting vases you’ll own!

03. Fume by Hakan Gürsu
adesign_inspirational_1617_11

adesign_inspirational_1617_12
Interesting fact. Hakan Gursu stands at the top of A’ Design’s World Designer Rankings with a mind-blowing total of 83 A’ Design Awards over the years! The Fume got him yet another award this year for its beautiful design. Just a simple tinted transparent acrylic cube, the Fume acts as a rather beautiful pen-stand for your alcohol markers (something designers swear by). Its design doesn’t just have them laid out in an interesting format, it even allows you to segregate them by hue into three zones… One for color, one for warm grays, and one for cool grays. Genius!

04. Renard GT by Andres Uibomäe

adesign_inspirational_1617_15
The Renard GT tries to channel the spirit of a 1930s motorbike into a form factor that is modern and undeniably unique. The Renard GT’s carbon-fiber unibody integrates the motorcycle’s frame, fuel tank, and air box, while weighing just 9 kgs and looking so good, it could kill!

05. Filoferru by Robby Cantarutti
adesign_inspirational_1617_19

adesign_inspirational_1617_20
Nice chair, right? It’s made from individually looped pieces of metal piping, giving it a hypnotic quality. The pipes form everything from the chair’s legs, to the backrest, to the seat to even armrests! I personally love how it looks like a Slinky was bent into forming a seating device!

06. SpiderPan by Receb Bilici
adesign_inspirational_1617_3

adesign_inspirational_1617_4
Look out! Here comes the Spider-Pan!
The Spider-Pan was named so for its hexagonal design and its spider-leg inspired handles that do something rather wonderful. When you need to hold the pan like a saucepan, the handles fold outwards and join, to become an extended single handle. However, the handles separate and fold inwards too, forming two separate gripping points on either side of the utensil, perfect for heavier food items that need to be held with both hands. Ingenious, isn’t it? Plus, the handles when folded in are a great space saver in drawers and cabinets!

07. 01: Dimensioning Instrument by InstruMMents Inc.
adesign_inspirational_1617_7

adesign_inspirational_1617_8
As a proud owner of the 01 Dimensioning Pen by InstruMMents, I have to say… it’s absolutely spoiled me for scales and tape measures. The pen features a one of a kind rolling ring and a laser pointing guide that allows you to simply (and digitally) capture measurements both regular and non-linear with sheer accuracy. All measurements (accurate to the nearest 1/10th of a millimeter, get stored on the InstruMMents app, allowing you to save data for later use. Plus, the pen itself comes with interchangeable pencil, roller-ball, and stylus heads!

08. Paq by Maform
adesign_inspirational_1617_10

adesign_inspirational_1617_9
Maform’s second project to feature on this list isn’t as detailed or as intense as its previous one, but it explores something fun and quirky. The Paq, a seating made entirely from a sheet of foam and a cylinder, serves as a sitting stool and mattress when opened out, but by virtue of clever design, turns into a rather fun beanbag-inspired chair with a backrest that can be set up by not just adults, but by children (with a little practice) too! Pretty interesting form exploration, don’t you think??

09. Ji Mu by Bowen Qian
adesign_inspirational_1617_13

adesign_inspirational_1617_14
Using just a series of wooden ‘L’ sections, Bowen Quian creates a variety of furniture pieces by just fixing them at different places. The simple L shaped wooden ply pieces become a chair with a backrest but lay them out in a square shape, and you have a table who’s height matches perfectly with your L Chair. You can even make a wine bottle holder, or a magazine holder by fixing them together in an X shaped layout! What other orientations and products can you think of using these innovative wooden ‘L’ sections??

10. DuoSkin by Cindy Hsin-Liu Kao
adesign_inspirational_1617_17

adesign_inspirational_1617_18
DuoSkin presents the future of body-art that just doesn’t serve the purpose of art, but involves an element of interaction design too! The thin metal foil laid out on the skin has the ability to conduct electricity, or even act as a sensor, becoming one of the first fashion-oriented bio-tech products, not just serving a medical purpose, but even going as far as becoming interfaces for the products we use. Imagine being able to type out messages on your skin, or unlock your door with a pattern drawn on your fore-arm, or initiating a 911 emergency call using a secret button placed against your skin. The possibilities are literally endless!

YD Handpicks: 8 Potent Portable Power Banks

yd_handpicks_powerbank

How handicapped do you feel the minute your phone gives up on you because you haven’t charged it enough? You suddenly can’t call for help because when was the last time you saw a payphone on the streets? You can’t navigate home, because you don’t have a printed map. You can’t really book an Uber, so you need to settle for a taxicab (which only works when you see one pass by). Sounds rather unpleasant, doesn’t it? Well, we’re human. We forget to charge our phones sometimes, and that’s honestly why we have Power Banks. They’re the greatest smartphone accessories of all time. Here’s a look at 8 of our choicest, most uniquely capable juice-providers for that smartphone of yours!

1. Mintyboost – Remember when AA batteries solved everything?
Looks like an unsuspecting tin of Altoids on the outside, but flip the lid open and you’ve actually got yourself a Power Bank! The Mintyboost is a DIY kit (you get to build it yourself) that allows you to use two AA Batteries to juice up your phone. Any time you’re in a fix, just buy a set of batteries off the shelf and you’ve got all you need to charge your phone. Want to hack the system? Buy rechargeable batteries!

2. LifeCard – Not Visa Power, but Battery Power!
Honestly, the biggest grief I have against Power Banks is the fact that they’re so bulky and block-ish. I don’t carry them unless I have a bag with me, and that pretty much defeats their purpose, doesn’t it? LifeCard, unlike that massive power-brick, is the slimmest power-bank around. In fact, you could ditch your library card and slip this baby right into your wallet. Its 1500mAh capacity will give your phone a decent boost of battery power… Definitely enough to get you through half your day.

3. Razer Power Bank – Raw, Hardcore Power Unleashed
If you’re familiar with Razer as a company, you know that they don’t build gadgets for the faint-hearted. Everything they make looks and works like a beast, be it their gaming gear, or their workstations, or even their power bank. The Razer Power Bank may just be the most capable power bank of its size, because while the LifeCard above had 1500mAh of power, the Razer power bank has 12,800mAh of power with QUALCOMM Quick Charge 3.0… and guess what. It wasn’t built just for phones. The Razer Power Bank can charge your laptop too, via the laptop’s USB Type-C port! In fact, you could casually charge your phone AND your laptop and even a tablet all together at once!

4. WeWow Gimbal Power Bank – Selfie and charging game on point
The next power bank gets the award for being the most talented. It actually isn’t even referred to as a power bank because it does something more impressive. It stabilizes your phone. The WeWow Gimbal Power Bank is literally a gimbal that can charge your phone. Made perfectly for gripping onto any smartphone, the WeWow will give you perfect shots and the smoothest videos, eliminating all the jittering our hands usually do while moving cameras around. Oh, and it also charges your phone. Pretty neat, I’d say.

5. Griffin Travel Power Bank – This power bank can be rather “handy”
While I still believe the smartwatch industry is a load of hogwash (oh no he just didn’t), it has one rather unique application for which I’ll give it credit. Biometrics. The sensors on your watch can actively monitor your heart-rate, track fitness, and do all sorts of other things… but like all electronics, smartwatches can die on you too. The Griffin Travel Power Bank fits into that niche scenario with its Apple Watch charging capabilities. Small like a key-fob, the power bank slips right into your keychain, and uses wireless charging to juice up your Apple Watch (2 and a half times). However, it can’t charge your phones yet, but that’s simply because the smartwatch runs on a much less powerful battery than your phone.

6. Solpro Gemini – Power from 93 million miles away
What good would a list of chargers be without one solar charger? Solpro’s Gemini is a power bank all right, but rather than being machined out of the finest aluminum, it put surface functionality above surface finish. On the top of the Gemini lies a rather capable solar panel, supplying power to not just the 2800mAh power-bank, but your phone itself. And the entire external charger is phone-sized too, for extra convenience.

7. Eton BoostTurbine – No power like manpower!
Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be transferred from a hand-crank to a phone, courtesy the Eton BoostTurbine. The next time you’re out of juice on your phone, maybe you could throw that useless fidget spinner and spin the hand-crank on Eton’s BoostTurbine to generate some battery power. While the BoostTurbine comes with a battery of its own, it can be topped off manually too, so no matter where you are or what you’re doing, you’ve got the power in your hands!

8. FuelBox Ultimate Charging Station – Will literally take care of everything you need to power
We’ve shown the Fuelbox a lot of love before, and left it right for the end here because for something that has the word Ultimate in its name, you have to leave it for the end! The FuelBox Ultimate Charging Station is just literally everything you need to power your electric/electronic gadgets. The product has a Multi Plug for a base (that plugs directly into your power supply) and a 5200mAh Lithium Ion power bank on the top that works with any smart-device. The power bank on the top is detachable, while the multi-plug base stays plugged into your socket permanently (the bank comes with magnetic snaps that not only hold the power bank in place but charge it too), allowing you to use it independently too. Cables for charging your smart devices are integrated into the design of the charging station, which means you won’t need to worry about forgetting cables, or having to deal with tangled cords. Multiple birds, one stone…
