These Arcade Game Shadow Boxes are Simply Awesome

Do you love classic arcade games, but don’t have the room (or the cash) for an arcade cabinet in your living room? These fantastic pieces of arcade-inspired wall art are the next best thing.

Each one of Glitch Arwork’s 3D shadow boxes uses a combination of authentic arcade graphics, along with some artistic license to make the scenes more dynamic and for the sake of composition. Thanks to the way they’re cut out, they really pop, and look amazing.

They’ve got designs inspired by Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Zelda, Mario, Rampage!, Street Fighter II, Super Metroid, Pong, and many more. Every one of these is amazing. I so need the Bubble Bobble one for my wall. That game is awesome.

They’re each handmade by artists Jill and T-Bone Forest using layers of carefully cut color prints and foamboard, then framed. Unlike the ones in the photos here, they also come with a protective sheet of glass in front.

Check all the work that goes into making each one in the video below, then drop by GlitchArtwork’s Etsy shop to buy a bunch for your wall. With prices ranging from about $35 to $70, they’re really reasonably priced for original pieces of handmade art!

Arcano Systems’ chiptune synth offers 80s video game nostalgia

Here at Engadget, we have quite an affinity for all things that remind us of what it was like to play video games in the 80s. That includes musical instruments and gear that are capable of reproducing those iconic chiptune sounds we all know and love...

Working Glock NES Zapper Should Fire Bullet Bills

The original NES Zapper is one of the most iconic video game controllers of all time. At best, it was great fun, and at worst it was a source of frustration. The most damage you could do with one was maybe throw it across the room at your kid brother – until now.

The guys at Precision Syndicate took a functional Glock pistol, and refinished it to look exactly like the same weapon you used to pick off birds in Duck Hunt.

The weapon looks really cool, though I don’t recommend playing Wild Gunman with it, unless you want a pile of shattered glass in place of your 70″ Samsung.

Retro NES Shower Curtain: Super Shower Time

Forget Super Mario Bros. Cleantendo’s Super Shower Time was the game to beat back in the day. You got the high score by soaping up and scoring extra hygiene points. At least that’s what this cool retro shower curtain implies. It looks like an old school NES video game cartridge, and it’s awesome.

This shower curtain even has a see-thru window that lets you be the star of the video game. This is a fun and geeky bathroom accessory for super geeks who want yet another reminder of the good old days of video games – even if this game never existed.

You will have to provide all of the 8-bit noises yourself as you lather, rinse and repeat. It’s only $24.99(USD) from ThinkGeek.

Coleco Chameleon will resurrect your favorite Atari 2600 games

The Coleco Chameleon from Retro Video Game Systems won't land on Kickstarter until the end of the month. However, it did hit Toy Fair earlier this week to give the public a little taste of its retro-gaming goodness and score a few deals. And score it...

Ultimate Nintendo: Guide to the NES Library

This is the book that old school Nintendo fans have been waiting for. The Ultimate Nintendo: Guide to the NES Library is a 450-page hardcover book that is your guide to over 750 8-bit Nintendo games that were released between 1985-1995!

This book is filled with every detail you could want about these games, like release date, developer, genre, availability, even a full review and rating for each game. This is what I call geek literature. I know it’s going on my bookshelf.

The Kickstarter campaign has already raised more than $80,000 (USD), far surpassing its $16,500 goal. Pledge at least $30 for the digital edition, or $60 for the printed copy. This is the kind of book that I could spend many hours with. For fans of the NES, this book is a must.

How Old School Video Game Graphics Worked

Check out part one of this new instructional video series, in which The iBookGuy explains how computer and video game graphics worked back in the 1980s. If you love old games and old computers, you’ll enjoy this video. You might even learn a few things.

mario_screen_1zoom in

This first video in the series starts things off simply with an explanation of 8-bit color limitations of classic machines like the Commodore 64 and Nintendo Entertainment System. If you are just learning about these things, he makes it super easy to understand, so you won’t get lost. Seriously it is simple stuff explained in a simple way.

In the next video he will be covering Apple II graphics.

Space Invaders now available for Android Wear

Space Invaders Smartwatch 1

The old yet beloved Space Invaders is now available for smartwatches running Android. Meet your future time waster for Android Wear!

After the last few updates to Android Wear, Google’s lightweight OS for wearable devices, the retro classic Space Invaders from 1978 arrives to smartwatches everywhere. The beloved classic from the arcades can now be played on Android Wear devices anywhere, such as a waiting room, public transportation… and the bathroom, the place where it matters the most. Obviously.

This new version of the game keeps the old pixel art aesthetic, but is completely revamped to be played without any physical buttons and uses the touch screens featured in smartwatches to both display and play the game with terrific results. The game plays fluidly and has a fantastic response which will impress even the button purists – at least, once you get used to playing in such a tiny screen.

The simplicity is Space Invader’s biggest selling point, and once installed we only need to press the screen to start the game, and the aliens will appear to attempt and destroy our ship which we control with our finger, and shoots automatically or each time we press it. As players progress through the game, they will not only earn points, but also face harder challenges, just like with the original game.

This app is only available for Android Wear devices, and can be downloaded for free at Google’s Play Store. It weighs only 7.5 MB. It’s pretty entertaining, and above all, very addictive. If you have already tried it out, be sure to tell us about it in the comments section.

Download the game at Google Play.

It’s been a long time since Jurassic Park came out so maybe you need a refresher. Especially since the new movie Jurassic World is coming out this week. 8-bit Cinema has you covered.

jurassic_park_8bit_1zoom in

This short version is perfect for those who don’t have a couple of hours to sit through the original movie. It’s Jurassic Park done in the style of a retro video game, with all of your favorite scenes and as much dinosaur havoc as you can stand.

This actually looks like a fun video game. Too bad I can’t play it.
