A Cleaner Public Loo?

Oprah asks us to squat, Europeans provide you with a protective cover and the Japanese provide you with self-cleaning of the toilet seats. The question is; are the public toilets as clean as we deem them to be, especially when we do what Oprah says? To be really sure about its hygiene, Bluelarix Designworks has developed the CSM Automatic Toilet. It is an automatic toilet system, which can be mounted on any toilet.

The CSM lays a new paper automatically on the toilet seat before use, so that the user always knows that the seat is clean. After using the toilet, the piece of paper on the seat is flushed.

Automatic Toilet Paper Dispenser Perfect for Germophobes

Sometimes it’s mind-boggling how companies are able to come up with solutions to problems that seem pretty trivial at first glance. A perfect example is the Camitool, an automatic toilet paper dispenser which was probably developed in response to all the complaints that germophobes unleashed against having to use toilet paper that (ick) others have already touched.

Auto Toilet PaperWe’ve already got automatic faucets, automatic soap dispensers, and automatic hand dryers in public restrooms. So why not automate one more thing so that people will virtually not have to lay their hands on anything at all?

On a serious note, it actually does help people with rheumatism grab toilet paper without the pain or the hassle. And the less hands that touch it, the cleaner.

Users can program just how many inches of toilet paper to dispense before having Camitool automatically cut it. Several Japanese hospitals already have the Camitool installed, but it might take a while before we see this hit public restrooms on a massive scale, no thanks to its 60,000 yen (~$765 USD) price tag.

Microsoft details Windows 8 File History, takes us through a Time Machine

Microsoft details Windows 8 File History, takes us through a Time Machine

Microsoft is still determined to explore every nook and cranny of Windows 8 on its way to the newly official October launch, and now it's swinging its attention towards File History, its revamped approach to preserving our data. The new component supplements Windows Backup, which Microsoft admits is "not a very popular" app, and is more than a little transparent in bringing OS X's set-it-and-forget-it Time Machine strategy to the Windows crowd. Not that we're complaining: the same basic philosophy of getting an automatic, version-aware backup of all our personal files is convenient on any platform, especially when we can get a temporary internal safeguard while we're on vacation. The differences in platforms have equal rewards and drawbacks, however. File History provides more control over backups than its Apple counterpart, including frequency (finally!) and backup age, but it can't be used to backup whole apps like with a Time Machine drive. As always with these in-depth Windows 8 explorations, there's much more to see at the source, so click on through if you've ever been worried about deleting a file by accident.

Smart Bed Tidies Itself for Lazy Human

Here’s a bed that rearranges its sheets and pillows on its own. Because tidying up your bed is too hard. Not that I think there’s a point to doing so, but still. Pixar tried to warn us, but it seems we’re still devolving into gigantic sloths. Although from an engineer’s standpoint a self-tidying bed could be an interesting project.

ohea smart bed

Made by Spanish furniture maker OHEA – its website is down as of this writing, I wonder why – the bed isn’t actually that smart. When it senses that its occupant has left, two mechanical arms with rollers smooth the blanket while two pairs of cords lift up the pillows and put them back down just as the arms below are finishing their part. Teamwork! Yeah! Skip to about 0:50 in the video below if you don’t want to be caught watching a little girl sleep:

OHEA says it will start selling 5 different sizes of the bed this month. It’s a unique product, but it’s easy to see that there’s a lot of room for improvement. For one thing, the bed can only fix itself up to a certain point. For example, the pillows can’t be anywhere but on top for them to be picked up, and the arms only fix bed sheets. But perhaps that’s a good thing. Let’s just make our beds. Or ask a fellow human to do it. Hey, it’s exercise!

UC Berkeley freshman shows us his ridiculously automated dorm (video)

Image

Besides beer pong, the whole point of going away to college is to blossom into an independent, motivated, self-sufficient adult. That is, of course, unless your dorm's name is BRAD (Berkeley Ridiculously Automated Dorm), where freshman Derek Low controls devices all around his room without even getting out of bed. An app on his phone can adjust ambient lighting and curtain position depending on the situation. His laptop uses Dragon Dictate to turn shouts into tasks his pile of servos and motors can accomplish. Just saying "Romantic mode" makes a disco ball pop out of the ceiling and plays the epically passionate Elton John song, "Can You Feel The Love Tonight." As if that wasn't enough, the emergency "party mode" button located next to the bed activates a bunch of lasers and strobes, as well as fog and blacklights while a bumpin' stereo system cranks out dance music. This dorm is clearly every college freshman's dream. I mean, who wouldn't want to wake up with Justin Bieber every morning? Check out the video after the break.

Insert Coin: Rowdy Robot creates Bluetooth 4.0 beacons that activate automatic alerts

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.

Insert Coin: Rowdy Robot creates Bluetooth 4.0 beacons that activate automatic alerts

It's no secret that Bluetooth 4.0 is energy efficient, but now a startup called Rowdy Robot wants to use it for something rather less predictable than monitoring heart palpitations during your Tour de France training. A network of little beacons ("tōds") interacts with your iPhone or iPad and lets you receive movement-triggered alerts: like when your kid wanders too far, or when they finally return home after hanging out with the corner cartel. Many uses will be similar to NFC tags, but with the advantage of a vastly greater range of up to 500ft -- plus a single beacon can last for years on a single battery. Of course, it could also work with location-based services, triggering automatic updates as you pedal past the Arc de Triomphe -- but none of this will happen unless you check out the video after the break and help Rowdy Robot meet their $50,000 target.
