Bentley Continental GT Fitted with Tank Treads

YouTube channel AcademeG found a cheap Bentley Continental GT (are they ever actually cheap?) and created this monster off-road version. In this case it probably was cheap since it had so many problems with the engine.

For starters, the luxobarge needed new turbos for the twin-turbo W12 engine. So the guys at Russian vlog AcademeG replaced the engine with a Japanese-market Toyota 4.3L V8 engine. Then they ditched the original Bentley frame and drivetrain. But what they did next makes them my personal heroes. The body was placed onto a custom frame with tank treads. They call it the Ultratank.

This thing is badass, although it does have some problems. The engine doesn’t like to operate at the low rpms that the treads prefer and it has issues cornering. Who cares? Just run over stuff in your rich people tank and stop complaining.

They do have a point though – if the vehicle corners too hard, the treads come off. Oh, and there are no brakes. To slow down you crank the steering wheel back and forth which slows the inside tread as the vehicle starts to turn. I can live with that. I just want to run stuff over. Check out the full Ultratank build log on YouTube.

What if two car companies merged their design styles?

auto_mashups_1

We’ve looked at a lot of design-semantic switches where we imagine one company designing a product out of their usual catalog (but with their design style)… cases in point, a lot of PDF Haus’s work.

Today we look at a design-language-fusion, if you will. Created by rendering firm NeoMam Studios, this series looks at cars that are a result of two companies coming together to fuse their styles. You’ve got a BMW + Lamborghini mashup right above that combines the Italian supercar manufacturer’s edgy style and signature yellow body-color with BMW’s signature kidney grille. At the end of the day, the car’s still a stunner!

Scroll down below and you’ll see, in order, a Bentley + Ferrari mashup that combines British class ant Italian fervor and passion. Followed by a Nissan + Porsche harmony that would truly be a feat of engineering. Next, we have a Volkswagen + Ford mashup that combines the strategic sensibility found in both companies. Following that is a strange combination of David and Goliath, Smart and Range Rover. This alliance gives smart-cars their much-needed rugged makeover, allowing them to look less puny and more dominating on the asphalt. Lastly, and a personal favorite is the combination of two classic American Muscle brands, Dodge and Chevrolet. Looking like a Charger and a Camaro had a beautiful love-child, the car is quite literally the ultimate mash-up automobile!

With Starck’s Power Dock, Bentley goes electric!

bentley_starck_powerdock_1

Collaborating with design powerhouse Philippe Starck, maker of iconic objects from Alessi’s Juicy Salif citrus juicer to Axor’s Axor Starck V faucets, Bentley hopes to get their brand of luxury on the electric automotive bandwagon. A Bentley owner himself, Philippe Starck designed Bentley’s Power Dock, a charging station to be used with the automotive company’s Bentayga Hybrid model.

Described as “avant-garde high-tech”, Starck’s Power Dock is distinct looking, with its metal dome, vertical screen, and golden background introduces a touch of luxury to electrification, while at its heart, looking soft and approachable, encouraging users to plug in their car more often.

The Power Dock can be wall mounted and even comes with a stand of its own, giving it the appearance of a car horn, with its bulb and horn impression, making it, once again, look familiar, rather than daunting or frightening (case in point – Tesla’s ‘metal snake’ self docking charging arm).
