Weapons of cheese destruction

cheese_companions_1

What CAN you design with a two-dimensional metal sheet? How functional can you make it? The guys over at Agency had the same question. Collaborating with stalwarts, Jon Gould and Alison Jackson, the Cheese Companions are a cutlery set fit for every type of cheese you can pull put of your larder.

The Cheese Companions allow you to carve, cut, and spread a wide variety of cheeses. Its edgy design and metallic finish stands out among the creamy hues and textures of cheese; not only making it easier to spot, but also giving your kitchen table a beautiful, contrasting composition!

Flat-pack-ready, the set comes attached so the user can easily snap off the desired number of utensils. Furtif Knives Look Slick, Last Really Long

Evercut-knives

It’s nice when something that looks cool also has equally cool functions to match. The Furtif knives, from the Evercut line by “TB Groupe, one of France’s established knife makers and also the only eco-friendly cutlery maker in that country with ISO 9001 accreditation” not only look like they were brought back from the future, they have a “laser-bonded titanium-carbide surface [that] lasts 300 times longer than standard steel and 5 times longer than ceramic, according to third-party testing.” This means that with regular usage you shouldn’t have to sharpen them in 25 years! Of course you’d expect knives that look like this and last this long to cost an arm and a leg, but you’d be wrong. Most of them cost $138, while the paring knife is $78 and the utility knife is $92.

Of course looks and durability isn’s all that there is in a good kitchen knife, so we won’t speak of balance, comfort, and whatever else discerning chefs might look for. But for the average kitchen ninja, these will do.

It featured TARDIS right on the plate so you can’t help but stare at it with every bite. The spoon, fork, and knife have the same handle as the Sonic Screwdriver, so that makes them instantly way more awesome than your average cutlery. The set is available for $29.99.

Cutlery Art

The latest in a trend of artistic cutlery, this cleverly crafted curved wood slice gives table settings an entirely new presentation. Made of stainless steel, filled with small magnets and covered in a walnut varnish, it has a mysterious quality as metal spoons, forks and knives are held firmly in place against the wood material. Elevated from the surface, it’s also a sanitary and safe way to keep cutlery in place.

Check Your Food for Poison with the Magnifying Spoon

Are you a king? Or maybe just a very important person who others would like to see dead? Beware of poison. However, food tasters just make your food cold and besides, the poison might be slow-acting.You could always make your own meal, but you are too special for that. Maybe you could try this magnifying spoon to search for strange stuff before you eat. It might not find liquid substances, but it might spot other contaminants.

Design firm Object Solutions designed this tool that lets you magnify your food. The special spoon may just help you to see any foreign objects like stray hairs and that fly in your soup.

Never eat a weird foreign object again.

HelloSpoon Feeding Robot: Nannynator

A few months ago we saw a silly viral ad featuring a malfunctioning robot arm. HelloSpoon is the kinder version of that sadistic ‘bot. Made by Luis García González, the feeding robot is meant to help the disabled, the elderly and children to eat.

To compensate for its crude appearance, HelloSpoon comes with a mobile app that’s bursting with warm encouragement, which should make it a hit with kids. For example, it plays music as it scoops food and then cheers when you eat the food it offered. Luis is aware that there are already similar robots for sale, but his goal is for HelloSpoon to cost 90% less than these existing products, which typically sell for $4,000 to $5,000 (USD).

Make your browser say “Aah” and feed it this link to Indiegogo, where you can pledge at least $399 to receive a beta version of HelloSpoon as a reward. There’s also a developer kit reward that you can get by pledging at least $199.

Courtly Cutlery

In creating Jarosinksi & Vaugoin’s design No. 192, Thomas Feichtner drew inspiration from the classic methods involved in producing utensils by hand, a process typically used by the manufactory. The resulting product employs a clever combination of clear surfaces and radiuses with a theme of two diametrically intersecting phases that together lend the cutlery a highly individual character. Robust yet refined, the collection is well-balanced for both casual and formal table setting alike.

Spreading Cold Butter Just Became Possible

butterup

There are few things more frustrating than ripping a piece of bread apart with a chink of cold, hard butter. Solutions normally range from a quick stint in the microwave, to leaving it out of the fridge overnight, to using a newfangled bodyheat butter knife. This particular solution does seems to have them all beat, however. The ButterUp Knife has a string of grating holes that turn that hard butter into easily spreadable ribbons of salty dairy fat. Just run the knife atop your block of butter, and spread as you normally would.

It’s around $11, although you’ll now have to wait until March 2015 to get yours since the Kickstarter went through the roof and all the earlier batches are now sold-out.
