Circular desk concept has an interesting way of measuring the time you spend on it

A lot of people feel that there aren’t enough hours in a day without realizing how much time they might be spending or even wasting on unimportant activities. Keeping track of how you spend your time is often one of the first pieces of advice that productivity gurus give because they often reveal how much free time we actually have if we schedule our actions wisely. There is no shortage of time-tracking and logging apps today, but these digital tools are sometimes easily dismissed or ignored because they’re too convenient. This rather unusual table, however, makes the passage of time a bit more visible and tangible, allowing people to have a more personal relationship with the time they invest in work, projects, and other activities.

Designer: Yunseo Jung

Right off the bat, the Time Table already strikes an interesting visual. Unlike the majority of desks and tables, it’s made almost completely out of circles, from the tabletop to the built-in lamp to the rods that make for its legs and structure. One side of the table shows that leg, but the other side has an arc that functions like a privacy shield. There is also a matching circular tool to complete the set, though such a design isn’t actually novel to this kind of furniture.

While a circular table isn’t exactly rare, the attached “sub table” is. It’s a smaller circular tray affixed to the exposed leg of the table, but that’s not what makes it unique. This sub-table actually moves up and down, changing its elevation as time passes before returning to its base state at the lowest point. Think of it as a time, like a reverse hourglass, that slowly demonstrates the movement of time in a very visual manner.

The basic idea of the Time Table is to let the person sitting in front of it measure, log, and be aware of how much time they’re spending there. You might place some tools related to your work there or anything else that you’ll be able to notice in the corner of your eye. It offers a visual and tangible experience in counting down time without being monotonous like watching seconds tick by. Admittedly, it might also be a bit distracting, which could also be the point of instilling awareness of your time.

Novel as the concept might be, there are also a few issues with the Time Table’s design. The position of the elements, for example, might not be ergonomic or comfortable, with the lamp at a fixed spot and the privacy shield at the side potentially blocking leg movement. Given its design, there seems to also be little room for changing the height of the table, which could be too low or too high for some people. The moving sub-table as a time tracker is definitely an interesting idea, but it could probably be implemented in a different way that doesn’t negatively affect the rest of the table’s functionality.

Whether you’re working from home, or in a corporate office, the one thing that’s pretty much consistent in both these scenarios is a desk! A desk is probably one of the most important pieces of furniture in our modern lives, only because we spend the majority of our day on it. You may be typing away to glory, munching away on a snack, or simply fidgeting with a random object – you do end up spending hours on your desk. And hence, it’s really important that your desk be neat, tidy, and uncluttered. 1. The Altar I Keyboard

The Altar I Keyboard is built from post-consumer waste-derived plastic, and features a unibody aluminum framed peripheral in US and UK layouts with 78 key and 77 key layouts.

Why is it noteworthy?

The Altar I’s keycaps are also forged out of recycled polymers, thereby making it a sensible accessory that doesn’t harm Planet Earth. The accessory is designed for touch typing and can be utilized on two devices simultaneously, which is suitable for those who switch between their laptop and tablet frequently.

What we like

  • Crisp and minimalist font
  • Built using recyclable and earth-friendly materials

What we dislike

  • No info on the pricing and availability for now
  • It seems to be available only in black, no other color options

2. Everlasting Metal Pencil

The Everlasting Metal Pencil is almost like a Wacom stylus that has a tip that never needs to be replaced or sharpened. It’s an innovative pencil that enables you to focus completely on your creative process, and on the lead less.

Why is it noteworthy?

The octagonal shaft is made of aluminum and houses a special alloy core. Knowing that, you might think that all it will do is leave heavy grooves on your paper, but your mind might be blown away when it draws like a real pencil without seeing the tip wear down even after dozens of marks.

What we like

  • It has a metal core instead of clay or charcoal, so it wears down slowly, and may actually outlive you

What we dislike

  • It doesn’t smudge or smear the way normal graphite does. That might be disappointing for those who use smudging techniques

Why is it noteworthy?

What we like

  • Utilizes high-quality Japanese paper that is preferred by stationery connoisseurs

What we dislike

  • It does seem like an ordinary notepad from the looks of it

6. The Gravity Pen

The Gravity Pen is pretty intriguing since it puts the center of gravity closer to where your fingers are, making it easier to make agile strokes. The pen does that by having a grip that’s larger than the barrel, expanding the area of the grip for a more comfy hold.

Why is it noteworthy?

The faceted form of that grip also makes it easier to grip the pen, allowing for a more stable grip as well. It’s the ultimate ergonomic pen design, thanks to a smart application of physics and minimalist design principles.

What we like

  • Extremely ergonomic to hold and use
  • Durable and lightweight

What we dislike

  • Not available in different color options

7. The Nebula Desk Lamp

The Nebula Desk Lamp was designed by COG Design Studio in partnership with the lighting brand Bonakia by building a basic yet defined form of lighting via repetition, transformation, and an innovative combination of distinctive geometric shapes.

Why is it noteworthy?

The Nebula Desk Lamp was designed by giving a subtle and formative beauty to flat shapes using three-dimensional changes in direction and bending. This creates a refreshed and interesting form for a lighting design, by simply playing around with various geometric figures, and imparting them with an emotional aesthetic.

What we like

  • The innovative design gives the impression of a nebula in space, which lends the design its name

What we dislike

  • There is no option to change/customize the design as needed

8. Stair Table Lamp

Designed by Notchi Architects for Oblure, the Stair Table Lamp is inspired by a playful and whimsical approach to geometry and gravity. The lamp brings to mind the image of a sphere balanced delicately on the edge of a staircase.

Why is it noteworthy?

It is an adorable yet functional product that can be slipped into the various nooks and crannies of your home, illuminating them while also keeping your books in check.

What we like

  • Doubles up as a bookend and a table lamp

This Mini Height-Adjustable Desk Is The Ultimate Space-Saving Furniture For Your Home Office

Most of my day is unfortunately spent on my desk, typing away, or scrolling through my phone. On most days, I end up eating my meals on it as well. And I’m sure that’s the case with most of us, since working from home became the new norm, and our home offices became our new hang-out spots. But having a great desk is important! Simply a ‘good’ desk won’t do either. A great desk helps us work comfortably and effectively. It puts us in the right mindset, helping us achieve our daily productivity goals and checkmark all the tasks on our to-do list! Not only should our desks be clean, but they should also sport an ergonomic and functional design! And good looks are a bonus. And finding a desk that does all of the above is tougher than it looks. This is where the Float Mini desk swoops in!

Designer: Humanscale

Office furniture brand Humanscale unveiled the Float Mini desk, which as its name implies is a compact sit-stand desk that can effortlessly fit into any room in your home! The Float Mini is designed to be a miniature version of HumanScale’s Float desk, and it is equipped with a small cantilevered work surface, and a single-leg frame that doesn’t occupy much space at all. The desk is equipped with optional casters and is in fact quite easy and effortless to move. So, you can transfer it from one environment to another, and adjust it to various seating positions.

Much like the larger Float desk, the Float Mini utilizes a non-powered pneumatic cylinder that raises and lowers the work surface, providing it with a gilding motion, that doesn’t require the desk to be plugged into a power source. This ensures that the desk can even be taken outdoors!

The Float Mini features a 16 by 27-inch tabletop that is crafted from bamboo, which is a pretty sustainable and aesthetic material. The bamboo provides the desk with a warm and minimal look, that ensures it perfectly merges with modern homes and interiors. The Float Mini desk is an excellent option if you’re looking for a space-saving design that looks great and functions well!

How this modular desk lets you design your ideal workspace without breaking a sweat

People have recently become more conscious of the tables they use for work, whether it’s for a work-from-home setup or with employer-provided furniture in the office. It’s clear that there is no one size that fits all, but even the plethora of options available doesn’t always work all the time. Circumstances can change, like moving to a new flat or rearranging the office space, that would make that carefully selected desk unusable. Rather than a perfectly designed piece of furniture, what we need is one that can change and grow to our needs and environment. That is exactly the kind of flexibility that this modular, customizable, and long-lasting desk is offering, and you won’t even need tools to make it happen!

Ever since work-from-home setups became a thing, the number of customizable desks started to rise rapidly. But while these let you add or remove some compartments, they often retain their basic shape that was dictated by their design and production. A corner desk forever remains L-shaped, while a square or rectangular table will be that way until it’s broken. When your situation or location changes, you’re pretty much out of luck if your sophisticated desk won’t even fit your room.

What the Den Desk does differently is to offer you the building blocks to assemble your own desk just the way you like it, almost like playing LEGO. You can start with the most basic setup and then grow your desk by adding other parts or accessories, from monitor mounts to even a cabinet on the side. Want a corner desk? Simply slot it in another desktop at an angle and you’re good to go! Should space suddenly become a problem, you can easily separate the pieces to go back to a more space-efficient and minimalist workspace.

What’s even better is that you can assemble and disassemble these pieces with relative ease, almost like playing with those toy bricks. Thanks to the innovative Den Mounting System, you can slide parts into each other with specially-made metal connectors and then secure them with thumbscrews. Say goodbye to the days of hunting for screwdrivers and wrenches to set up or take down your desk with an almost effortless system that might even encourage you to change your desk every so often.

The wins don’t stop there, either. Each piece is an elegant work of craftsmanship and durability, made from furniture-grade Baltic Birch ply for the wooden desktop or black or white powder-coated 6061 aluminum for the legs and privacy panels. As a testament to its sustainability and durability, the Den Desk even comes with a lifetime warranty, relieving owners of the worry that comes whenever they have to move homes or offices. With the Den Desk, you can finally design a workspace that grows with your needs, allowing you to do your best work all the time.

This colorful writing desk brings energy and playfulness to your busy work

The desk has always been associated with serious activities, whether it’s work from the office, school work, or anything else that requires your utmost concentration. That, unfortunately, gives this piece of furniture a solemn and almost emotionless atmosphere, something people would avoid under normal circumstances. That’s why most people try to add photos, toys, and knickknacks to their desks in an attempt to inject some life into their workspace. Of course, there’s no rule that says that desks need to be somber and serious affairs, as this multi-functional writing desk tries to prove with a dynamic composition of lines and colors that radiate vibrancy and energy that will hopefully help prime your mind for the work that lies ahead.

Designer: Alessandro Mendini (by Porro)

We’ve seen our fair share of desks here at Yanko Design, and most of them take the form of flat horizontal planes with plenty of room for papers, computers, and stationery. There is, however, also a class of desks, particularly writing desks, that are practically vertical shelves with retractable or fall-front/drop-front panels that transform into areas for writing, typing, and any other kind of work. The Linea writing desk is this latter kind, but it goes beyond the typical monochromatic wooden writing desks to add a bit of life to your space.

Based on rediscovered designs by famed postmodernist Italian architect and designer Alessandro Mendini, the Linea writing desk utilizes dynamic lines and bright colors to catch your attention and tickle your mind into activity. There are now gentle curves or circles here, just lines that cross each other to form geometric patterns usually associated with dynamism, such as triangles and diamonds.

Of course, lines aren’t enough to really make a design pop, and Linea also employs bold colors that complement and contrast with each other. The shiny cellulose acetate surfaces bring these hues to life, while the chiaroscuro effect of contrasting dark and light colors gives it more depth. The Linea writing desk goes against the flow of beautiful yet lifeless minimalist desks and makes an ode to boldness and creativity in the hopes of inspiring the same.

The writing desk is actually just one-third of a set that makes up this Linea line. Also part of that family are two low cupboards, one with hinged doors and another with an open face and a drawer. Regardless of the form, all three embrace the same design of lines and colors that capture not only the eyes but also the imagination, giving the brain a little exercise to help get your creative juices flowing for the work you’re about to face.

Top 10 Unique Accessories for Digital Nomads & Their On The Go Work Setup

Whether you’re working from home, or in a corporate office, the one thing that’s pretty much consistent in both these scenarios is a desk! Or, if you’re a digital nomad who works on the go, your desk could often switch between a typical work desk or a table at a cafe. Not only will this improve your work routine and productivity, but it will also help you maintain a clearer and more streamlined mindset. And, I’ve discovered that adding limited, quality, and innovative products to my desk setup can help me in achieving these goals! The desk accessories you place on your desk are an integral part of your home/corporate office. From a USB key that can fit into your keypad to a mechanical keyboard made from recyclable materials – these ingenious desk accessories are all you need to achieve your desk setup goals!

1. Saint Antoine USB Key

USB flash drives are usually tiny and compact, making them convenient to carry around. But the issue arises when you misplace that same USB drive owing to its small size. This concept design tries to eliminate that issue by making the drive so thin that you can stick it between your laptop’s screen and keyboard.

Why is it noteworthy?

What this concept does differently is to eschew the traditional rectangular form of these accessories into something that has small protrusions branching off a relatively thin stem. This shape isn’t without its purpose, though, since that shape makes it possible to fit the USB key in between the keys of a laptop keyboard.

What we like

  • It allows you to keep an eye on your USB key, and prevent you from misplacing it
  • Safe to close the laptop lid on it as it won’t puncture the screen

What we dislike

  • Since it is quite thin, it may not have enough space to store all your data
  • Removing it from the keyboard every time may also be very inconvenient, and it could impact your typing experience

2. The Altar I

Electronic Materials Office recently unveiled its first product – a keyboard made from sustainable materials. Post-consumer waste-derived plastic was used to create the keyboard, and it has a unibody aluminum framed peripheral amped with US and UK layouts with 78 and 77 keys.

  • Clean, crisp, and minimalist font
  • Crafted using recyclable and earth-friendly materials

What we dislike

  • No information on the pricing and availability for now
  • Only available in black, with no other color options, we would love some diversity

3. Mayku Accessories

The Mayku Accessories collection comprises a keyboard, a mouse, and a more traditional webcam that attaches to the top of a monitor. While their designs don’t show anything functionally new it’s their appearance that really catches the eye.

Why is it noteworthy?

Instead of using the usual flat surfaces and sharp corners, these products use “softer,” more curved forms, like the sides and tops of the keycaps, the entire surface of the mouse, or the body of the webcam.

What we like

  • The usually cold, impersonal, and traditional devices look like hard candy or even soft marshmallows

What we dislike

  • While the visuals are arresting, the functionality retained is the same, no innovation there

4. Portable Hard Drive Concept

This hard drive concept by CLAIRE + LÉA is designed to occupy minimum space while also looking good. It features a spring-loaded slider mechanism so that you can clamp and attach the hard drive to the edge of your desk.

Why is it noteworthy?

This interesting feature has the effect of hiding the device from sight, even when it is being used. The hard drive has a simple and distinctive design that demands to be shown off on your desk.

What we like

  • Even though it is hidden, it is still quite easily accessible owing to the USB port on top

What we dislike

  • You could bump or hit your knee and leg against the drive since it is hanging from the edge

5. ovOlio

Finding some peace and calm in your chaotic day can often seem impossible. But this tranquil desk accessory is a revolutionary fusion of design and mindfulness, and it is created to enhance your workspace and state of mind.

Why is it noteworthy?

Called ovOlio, the desk accessory features a partial magnetic levitation of the wooden block at its center with just a small base for support. You can open the block and add in a few drops of your favorite essential oil, allowing the delicate aroma to spread in the room.

What we like

  • Promotes a calm and balanced workday
  • Combats anxiety and makes you feel more at peace

What we dislike

  • Looks easily breakable, and the oil could spill over if it falls

6. Belkin BoostCharge Accessories

The BoostCharge Convertible Qi2 Wireless Pad to Stand and the other dubbed BoostCharge Pro 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Pad with Qi2 are Belkin’s latest accessories for the iPhone 15.

Why is it noteworthy?

The BoostCharge Convertible Qi2 Wireless Pad to Stand is for people who want a wireless charging pad that can flip upwards so that they can easily watch content. The BoostCharge Pro 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Pad with Qi2 is for gadget lovers who frequently charge their array of devices in tandem.

What we like

  • Will juice up MagSafe-equipped iPhone with Qi2 standard at 15W

What we dislike

  • They’re not available yet in the market
  • No variations in color and style

7. Blocco

Dubbed Blocco, this functional yet good-looking calculator is no ordinary everyday calculator. It effortlessly combines grace and precision in a simple and minimal design, while adding a visually appealing element to your desk.

Why is it noteworthy?

The Blocco calculator features a universal and ergonomic design that is suitable for both left-handed and right-handed users. It features an angular chamfered surface that supports quick and effortless typing and enhances visual appeal.

What we like

  • Directly projects calculations onto paper further enhancing its user-friendliness
  • Aesthetically and visually pleasing looks, a far cry from boring old calculators

What we dislike

  • Feature a portable design, but its usage is limited as it needs a flat surface to project the equations clearly

8. The Peg-Mag System

If your desk isn’t large enough to accommodate your working gear, and you need more space but don’t want to splurge a butt load of money you may want to opt for the Peg-Mag System!

Why is it noteworthy?

The Peg-Mag System combines three clever strategies to help you maximize your desk’s space and potential. The first is a balcony-like Desk Extender that attaches to the side of your table, giving you an extra shelf that cantilevers off your table. Designed to hold a significant amount, the extender is perfect for books, stationery, speakers, or even a fairly heavy gaming rig or CPU.

What we like

  • Features a rail  for attaching a pegboard slider
  • Transforms your desk into a pinnacle for productivity

What we dislike

  • No color/style customization

9. Wooden Pen Holder

This block of wood is actually the most zen and calming pen holder you could add to your desk. It creates an atmosphere where you can pick up your pen, much like the way you would pick up a brush or a fountain pen from an inkwell.

Why is it noteworthy?

Made from genuine maple wood, each piece has grains and patterns that make it unique and special. Together with an equally stylish pen, this block transforms any desk into a thinker’s workbench, where the tools of the trade are just at an arm’s reach.

What we like

  • The Wooden Pen Holder has a gently curving depression that can accommodate any pen with a standard-size
  • When you pick the pen up, you almost believe that the ink will also follow it up from an invisible well of ideas

What we dislike

  • It occupies precious real estate on a bench that cannot be adjusted/reduced

10. Flash Back

The Flash back is a conceptual product designed to be a digital photo frame that showcases one or more photos, from your smartphone’s gallery. The device is locked to a very specific presentation mode, unlike typical digital frames.

Why is it noteworthy?

Flash back slowly scrolls through the photos sideways, creating an interesting film reel rather than a slideshow. The curved shape of the device is a tribute to the physical medium, providing it with an old-school feel while maintaining modern functionality.

What we like

  • Multifunctional design that also serves as a pen holder, with a basin for clips and small items that would otherwise litter your desk

What we dislike

  • It’s a concept, not a real tangible product, so we don’t know how smoothly or efficiently it’ll work in actuality

The Current Task Light Is A Clever Little Lighting + Charging Concept For Your Desk

If you work in a commercial office or are still sticking to the work-from-home culture, in both these scenarios you will need a desk. But simply having a desk isn’t the endgame, it’s about creating a desk setup that holds a limited but quality number of products that help you achieve your day-to-day tasks. The desk accessories you place on your desk are an integral part of your home/corporate office. Not only will this improve your work routine and productivity, but it will also help you maintain a clearer and more streamlined mindset. And a smart, functional, and well-designed accessory that would be a brilliant addition to your workdesk is the Current Task Light.

Designer: Jones & Partners

Designed by UK-based Jones and Partners, the Current Task Light is yet another addition to the studio’s portfolio of simple, minimalist, and highly functional products. The award-winning task lighting + charging concept is a multifunctional product to aid in your daily multitasking and is perfectly complementary to both residential and commercial spaces. Jones and Partners wanted to create a thoughtful and well-designed solution that would allow coworkers to plug their devices across a large desk while working together. And, they created the Current Task Light – a modular and minimal task light that not only provides illumination but also doubles up as a storage space for stationery, wireless, and USB port charging.

The task light is created in two versions – first a simple task lamp with a wireless charging surface located on the left side of the lamp’s base. The charging surface is perfectly integrated with the lamp. The second variant is quite similar to an iceberg, with a certain section of the lamp base being concealed under the tabletop. The section on the desk neatly hides a larger plug-in unit, which allows both the charging modules to be interchanged when needed.

The Current Task Light is a compact and space-saving design that will occupy minimum space on your desk. The components of the lamp including the slender base and LED shade are quite delicate and won’t need much space. Currently, the task light is a concept, but we’re hoping to see it as a real tangible design very soon.

The STELLA Lamp Is Like A Tranquil Fairy Light Created For Your Messy Desk

A tastefully and functionally designed lighting design is something I simply cannot resist! I love them since they have the ability to illuminate a space – both literally and metaphorically. Besides the physical light that it quite obviously emits, a well-designed lighting design can add manifolds of personality and charisma to a room or space. They can function as sculptural pieces, that are an extension of your personal taste and preference, truly exhibiting the richness and niche-ness of your curation capabilities, or if they’re the portable kind you can carry them along with you to illuminate anything anytime anywhere. An excellent lighting design that would make a great addition to your work desk is STELLA.

Designer: COG Design Studio

STELLA is a part of the 2023 New Collection Lighting products designed by COG Design Studio in collaboration with the lighting brand Bonakia. The collection focuses on creating basic forms of lighting via repetition, transformation, and a combination of geometric shapes. They provide a defined beauty to flat shapes by implementing three-dimensional changes in direction and bending. They attempt to integrate an emotional aesthetic to the simple form, by playing around with geometric figures.

STELLA is truly quite pretty to look at! It features an interesting triangular intaglio shape and is built using acrylic material. The goal behind the design was to observe the sensibility of light when it is transmitted to a detailed intaglio pattern. The lighting design features waves on its surface, the light strikes against the waves, forming a star, and then quickly dissipates. The lighting effect is quite ambient and seductive. It powerfully illuminates everything around it, without being too loud or bold. It somehow artfully manages to be effective and not overpowering.

The STELLA desk lamp is an ideal mix of functionality, utility, and aesthetics. It merges all three to serve as an efficient lighting design that is also super easy to carry around owing to its compact form. The lamp does look a little fragile, so you may have to be careful while carrying it around, as it could easily slip and break. Sufficient care should also be taken while cleaning and maintaining the lamp.
