Build a sustainable ‘normal’ post quarantine with this flat-pack electric scooter

We are all seeing the effects of lesser vehicles on the road due to the lockdown, the air in so many cities has become cleaner than it has been in decades. So much so that you can see mountains and monuments that were otherwise hidden in a cloud of pollution. This unprecedented situation has shown us that we have the ability to slow down climate change with the right actions and one of them is to reduce air pollution – that will send major positive ripples through our ecosystem. The simplest way to contribute to that is by investing in an electric vehicle like Switch.

Switch is designed to make commuting in the city easier and solve the troubles one faces like the frequency of public transport, crowded parking, and poor infrastructure. Designers didn’t want the users’ lives to be planned around charging, so the electric scooter uses a high capacity swappable battery that can be easily exchanged for a fully charged one from a Switch station. It comes with an integrated navigation app that also reports on the statistics of your vehicle. Pollution only makes your immune system weaker (especially air pollution – it attacks your lungs and makes you more susceptible to viruses like Covid-19), so once the pandemic ends let us make a collective choice to build a cleaner ‘normal’ for our health and the planet’s health too.

The X-Scooter LOM solves vehicular congestion by just making mobility smaller

In almost every other industry, progress is always followed by adoption. Vinyls were followed by Cassettes, which were then dethroned by CDs, MP3 files, and finally online streaming. Progress leads to adoption, leads to optimization, followed by evolution, and then more progress. It’s a healthy cycle that allows technology and innovation to constantly provide a better experience to its end-user. Somehow that growth-cycle hasn’t seemed to make its dent in the automotive industry. We’re still, as a majority, driving fuel-powered 4-wheeler 4-seater cars using internal combustion engines that were invented in 1876. The technology has grown better over time, but hasn’t entirely moved onto its next phase.

The result of this visible on most streets today. We’re an ever-growing population that’s migrating towards cities that were designed and planned a hundred years ago, and primarily moving around in vehicles that were designed to deliver their potential on open roads, and not bumper-to-bumper traffic. The X-Scooter LOM (Last One Mile) picks up on a niche phenomenon with the potential to change how we move from A to B… last-mile scooters. By turning last-mile into ALL-mile, the X-Scooter LOM offers a way to move around with the convenience and range of a car or two-wheeler, but the size and format of an electric scooter.

The X-Scooter LOM pushes last-mile scooters into a category that makes them powerful and capable enough to replace your need for a motorcycle or car. It comes with the ability to drive on pavements, tarmac, gravel, or even off the road, thanks to motorcycle-style tires that gives it an all-terrain feature. In a world that is getting more crowded by the day, where there’s hardly any place to walk, let alone drive our cars, compact means of personal transportation have gained immense momentum. Innovative and exciting designs have been coming up for electric scooters, e-bikes, and even skateboards! There could be a world where everyone will be zipping by on their little electric vehicles. Upholding such a vision in mind, and to meet the needs of such a world, Ekaterina Tiholova designed her version of an electric scooter, and to be honest…it looks like a flat-packed one!

Tiholova’s scooter features a plain black base supported by two bulbous wheels. Its metallic grey and matte black looks are eye-catching, with a flash of lime yellow where you hold onto the handle, sealing the deal. The intricately treaded front wheel leads up to a quadrilateral-shaped handle, the scooter’s most unique feature!

The handle provides you with a strong grip, allowing you to maneuver the electric scooter, however, when not in use it can be folded back so that it lays directly above the base of the scooter. Once folded, the scooter resembles a sleek platform, one that can be easily stored away. But the designer planned for that as well!

To support her vision for a world where electric personal transportation reigns supreme, she designed an automated storage area for the flat-packed scooters, and it makes me feel like I’m in 2050 already! At first glance, the storage space looks like a mini nuclear reactor!

At the entrance, the designer has incorporated a long narrow slot to place the scooter upon, which can be controlled using a touch panel on one side. Once inside the different scooters are stored at various levels, forming a neat capsule.

When the scooters are needed, they can be easily accessed, unfolded, and started up! As convenient, space-saving and efficient Tiholova’s design scheme seems, the fact is that it’s still a concept. Could it become a reality anytime soon, or more importantly could such a design work in the future? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!
