These innovative paper plates are infinitely washable and reusable

Look closely and the Omotenasino Otomo don’t really look like paper plates. They look almost like plastic or melamine, with how incredibly glossy and opaque they are. The texture makes them almost look like cast iron, I’d say… but these plates aren’t made of any of those materials. They are, in fact, paper.

Japan’s fascination with paper spans over a millennium, with the introduction of Washi paper in 610 AD. It’s seen itself embedded in Japan’s culture, with its most popular use being in Origami, or the art of paper folding. The Omotenasino Otomo employ an Origami-esque pattern, and their innovation lies in the treatment of the paper, which makes it washable and reusable. This incredible ability comes from the design company Otomoshikki’s specialty lacquer, which allows the paper to turn into a stiff, waterproof, grease-proof, infinitely reusable material, almost perfect for utensils… and not just plates, spoons too!

The Omotenasino Otomo is a winner of the Design Intelligence Award for the year 2019.

This Alien Stop-Motion Flip Book Is a Terrifying Work of Art

Animated flip books are usually pretty cute and simple. This one, however, is complex and terrifying. The artistry that went into this creation is just inspiring. In this flip book, no one can hear you scream.

This stop-motion style flip book was made by artist Serene Teh and was actually commissioned by 20th Century Fox to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Alien franchise. That’s 40 years of alien horror that has kept us glued to our seats. What you see here isn’t just any flip book, but a masterpiece. Seriously, check out the video. Watch Serene flip through the book, as it tells a horrifying story of aliens with an appetite.

Even Jonesy the cat makes an appearance as an alien tries to eat it. No worries though, Ripley shows up and save the day, firing like 100 rounds into the Xenomorph. Eventually, the Xenomorph is jettisoned off of the ship through an airlock. That’s how you take care of an alien infestation, and it’s what airlocks were built for. The good guys always win you alien bastards! Now stay out!

Moleskine’s paper notebook lets you draw in vectors right inside Adobe Illustrator!

Teaming up together to achieve the near impossible, Adobe and Moleskine have debuted the Paper Tablet, a book and pen combo that translates sketches on paper to digital sketches on Adobe’s software… but that’s not all. The sketches you make on Moleskine’s Paper Tablet don’t just appear as scanned images on your computer. They get vectorized within Adobe Illustrator, giving you an infinite set of possibilities to take your doodles and actually begin working on them in vector software.

The magic happens courtesy Moleskine’s Adobe Creative Cloud Connected Paper Tablet (the notebook), and the Moleskine Pen+ Ellipse pen. The notebook comes with Adobe’s Illustrator icon at the top right of each page, and simply tapping on it with the Pen+ Ellipse lets you save all your progress to Adobe’s Creative Cloud. Once you begin sketching on Moleskine’s special notebook, the Pen+ records each movement, copying each stroke to Adobe Illustrator in real time, although you can sketch independently without having Adobe Illustrator open too. With a simple Adobe extension, you can beam all your progress to Illustrator and sketch in real-time should you choose. You can even undo actions and brush strokes on the digital file (although that won’t happen on paper).

Essentially replacing the need for a Wacom, while providing integration with Adobe’s Illustrator to remove all sorts of friction, Moleskine’s Paper Tablet is a neat way to take your doodles and sketches to the next level while retaining the comfort of drawing on paper.
