Pacific Rim Prop Auction has Mites

Out of all the movies that I have seen in the last few years, the one that surprised me the most was Pacific Rim. I went to see that flick with my kids because they wanted to see it expecting a terrible movie. It ended up being one of my favorite movies in a long time.

If you are a fan of Pacific Rim, you will want to check out this movie prop auction going on. A site called Prop Store has nearly 200 props and costumes from the film that are all being auction off and some of them are super cool. The highlight of the auction is Chuck Hansen’s Drivesuit which he wore to drive the Striker Eureka Jaeger, and which is currently listed for $22,500(USD).

The props include costumes from the Gipsy Danger ground crew, desks from Hannibal Chau’s place, a custom scale set used to measure out Kaiju chunks, and more. My favorite is the helmet worn by Raleigh when piloting the giant robot. Another awesome bit is the mechanical Kaiju Skin mite. That skin mite will sell for around $2300 while the helmet is is going for $8700.

Diablo III Sword of Justice Replica Will Smite the Unjust

Diablo III fans will recognize this sword prop right away. It’s El’Druin – The Sword of Justice – and it was designed directly from the digital art files for the game. That means it looks like the one Tyrael uses to flay baddies in the game.

The thing measures over three feet long. Sadly, it’s made of plastic that is hand-painted to look like metal, but on the other hand that means it doesn’t weigh 20 pounds. The replica has a pulsating blue light in the hilt that looks all fancy and sh*t.

Just think how cool this will look the next time you cosplay in a knight costume or feel the need to sword fight your friends over the last shot of Jager at your next LAN party. It’s available from ThinkGeek for $59.99(USD).

If I ever get a sword, I plan to name it the Blade of Infinite Stabbing.

Filmmakers Create Cool Bioshock Sky-hook Prop

If you enjoyed Bioshock Infinite, I have some good news for you. The Sky-Hook is real! As real as it is likely to get anyway. What you see here is an “Air Grabber” prop (the Rapture version of the Sky-Hook from Bioshock Infinite’s DLC).

This is a prop for an upcoming BioShock fan film from PCND FX. The details look pretty impressive and it even moves. Don’t try to jump and grab onto any rails though. The metal parts at the end do spin pretty fast, so the weapon part of it is definitely working.

Check out the video to see it in action. Don’t go sticking your fingers in there as it spins.

Temporal Schism Keyblade: Doctor Sora

This Doctor Who/Kingdom Hearts mashup is pretty great. What is it? It is an amazing Temporal Schism Keyblade of course. One that was handmade by deviantArtist SoulessStranger. No soul. Nah. Anyone who made this piece has to have a very amazing one. (Though she is missing an “L“.)

She made it as a custom order and it was made out of layered plywood, carved by hand with chisels and a Dremel. The windows were done with matchsticks and some resin. The handle and key/crown are done in silver and brass spray paint, the rest of it is hand-painted.

It looks really stunning. Great Timelord craftsmanship, Souless.

Volpin Props Building Epic Futurama Planet Express Ship Models

Fans of Futurama will immediately recognize the image below as the Planet Express ship. It turns out that maker of all things awesome, Volpin Props, is working on a set of three custom-built Planet Express models, and they’re shaping up to be great as we’ve come to expect from expert propmaker Harrison Krix.

From the video posted on Volpin’s YouTube channel, we find out that the ships even have illumination built in, operated by an Arduino Pro Mini controller. Those tail lights look especially sweet.

Ok, that looks pretty awesome to me. I can imagine tiny little versions of Fry, Leela, Bender, Zoidberg, Hermes, Professor Farnsworth and Amy Wong hanging out inside, causing all sorts of interplanetary mayhem.

Great job as usual, Harrison!

Team Fortress 2 Sentry Gun Miniature: Ain’t That a Cute Little Gun?

Valve has a life-size model of the Sentry Gun from Team Fortress 2 to guard their office. Programmer and 3D artist Jeff Wong may not be a big shot like Gabe Newell and his employees, but he has a turret manning his house too. You just have to look closely to see it.

Jeff engineered his turret using 3D Studio Max and Photoshop…

…then sent his 3D file to Shapeways to have it printed.

Orderin’ a sentry! You too can get Jeff’s miniature Sentry Gun from Shapeways for about $24 (USD). You should also check out Jeff’s time-lapse video if you know your way around 3ds Max.

Han Solo’s DL-44 Blaster for Sale: Your Chance to Shoot First

Now is your chance to own Han Solo’s actual DL-44 blaster from The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. This classic weapon is currently up for auction on invaluable.com with a starting bid of $200,000(USD). Sadly, it is a non-firing blaster. You’ll have to provide your own special effects.

solo blaster 620x436magnify

This blaster was used in the majority of scenes that feature Han, unlike the heavier version that was used for close-up shots. You would have seen this weapon in scenes like when Darth Vader uses the Force to whip the blaster out of Han’s hand in Empire, and in Jedi when Han wrestles with a Stormtrooper to regain his blaster on Endor.

There are no bids yet, so be like Han and bid first.  It is an awesome weapon from a more uncivilized age. Even beat up, this blaster design is amazing looking and an awesome piece of movie-making history.

Original Star Trek Galileo Shuttlecraft Being Fully Restored

It has been over 45 years since the original Star Trek graced TV screens, but somehow this 1:1 scale Galileo shuttlecraft prop from the original Star Trek has survived, though it shows it’s age.

shuttlecraft
Last year, the shuttlecraft sold at auction and the new owners, Adam Schneider and Alec Peters, took the prop to New Jersey boat restorers Master Shipwrights, and asked them to restore the old bird. Space.com recently interviewed the team about the restoration, and here are a few highlights of the conversation…

It’s probably taken 2,000 man hours of work. It’s a world-class restoration at a world-class shop. This is not me because I have no skills as an amateur doing work. This is a fabulous facility…Not only is it going to be cosmetically good, but from a structural point of view, from a quality of finish point of view, from a quality of wood point of view, and from an ability to move it safely without damaging it. It has never been in better shape.

shuttlecraft restoration 3

There’s no word yet on where the Galileo will eventually land, but its owners hope to put it on display for countless Trekkies to enjoy. It is awesome to see people restoring a piece of sci-fi history out of love for the series. Captain Kirk would be so proud.

Take one look at his handmade lightsabers and you immediately know that Roland Palotai is a talented craftsman and artist. These weapons are elegant yet simple, with some very nice attention to detail.

They are made from various metals and come with LEDs, switches, leather accents and other beautiful touches.

They are truly awesome, and I am simply in love with his work. It looks like prices for the props start around $500(USD).

If lightsabers aren’t your thing, how about an amazing 1/58 scale Millennium Falcon? I look at this stuff and I feel like a kid all over again. I wish I could afford all of his work. Head on over to Roland’s website to see more of his incredible creations.

Blacksmith Forges He-Man’s Sword of Power

By the power of Grayskull. A blacksmith named Tony Swatton has made a real life version of He-Man’s sword of power. Tony has made weapons for a bunch of movies and TV shows, so hey, why not?

He has made swords for Game of Thrones, Pirates of the Caribbean, Batarangs for Batman, and the list goes on. Now he makes weapons for his YouTube series, Man At Arms. And now he has made He-Man’s sword.

swordofpower
This impressively large sword has a 36-inch blade and it is the real deal. This one could kill somebody.  The build video is definitely worth watching – especially when he puts it to the test on that poor car.

Look out, Skeletor! No word on whether the blade has the powers of Castle Grayskull, but it sure is a beauty.
