SCREAM FORTRESS 2014 IS HERE!

My not so secret obsession/favorite game/secret lover is Team Fortress 2. It’s a brilliantly designed game that takes many of the best elements of both online gaming and sports and combines them into an endlessly re-playable blood orgy. I love it, and it has sucked away many hours from both my wife and me. What’s more impressive is the way Valve has managed to keep the game fresh. Regular online celebrations like Scream Fortress and Smissmis and regular updates like the new Robot Destruction mode and Mann vs. Machine help keep people interested. Oh… and the hats, the hats are great.

Fanboyism aside, Valve released this years Scream Fortress, and Merasmus is back, this time with an evil carnival dedicated to an ancient (and fabricated) Sumerian deity, more spells, and bumper cars. Yeah, that’s right, you can now get your TF2 on in virtual bumper cars. The glory of TF2 is intrinsically tied into mayhem, and there’s no more enjoyable mayhem than bumper cars, and that’s why I’m overjoyed right now.

You can play Scream Fortress now through November 12, 2014.

Team Fortress 2 Sentry Gun Miniature: Ain’t That a Cute Little Gun?

Valve has a life-size model of the Sentry Gun from Team Fortress 2 to guard their office. Programmer and 3D artist Jeff Wong may not be a big shot like Gabe Newell and his employees, but he has a turret manning his house too. You just have to look closely to see it.

Jeff engineered his turret using 3D Studio Max and Photoshop…

…then sent his 3D file to Shapeways to have it printed.

Orderin’ a sentry! You too can get Jeff’s miniature Sentry Gun from Shapeways for about $24 (USD). You should also check out Jeff’s time-lapse video if you know your way around 3ds Max.

Team Fortress 2 Chess Set: Deep Blu

The world’s premier hat simulator spreads its death and destruction to the chessboard. NECA’s WizKids will be releasing a Team Fortress 2 chess set by the end of the year. Never above mocking itself, Valve allowed WizKids to turn the game’s classes into disembodied heads, with the chess pieces worn as hats.

The hats are not just for show either. According to WizKids’ press release, the set will let you play a modified game of chess. That’s because the pieces – i.e. the hats – are interchangeable, so you can assign a different class to a particular piece at the start of every game. But while you’re playing, “players can claim various hats from other pieces and assume the movement characteristics of pieces captured, adding an element of variation and challenge to the standard game of chess.” Sadly the hats don’t seem to be stackable.

The Team Fortress 2 chess set should be available from ThinkGeek and the Valve store before the year ends, though it probably won’t be free to play.

All the Hats in Team Fortress 2 in One Image: Hats off to the Artist

Artist and webcomic creator Ashley Lange embarked on the challenge of a lifetime and emerged victorious. She drew all of the hats in Team Fortress 2 in one image. She didn’t include the hatless headgear and the miscellaneous items that can be considered hats, but honestly not even Gabe Newell can complain about her madness. I mean dedication. Thanks to Ashley, when the iPhone 9 comes out TF2 fans will already have a wallpaper for it.

Ashley used Photoshop CS3 and a Cintiq pen display to create the drawing. She almost gave up on the project because Valve kept coming up with new hats as she was working on the drawing. Fortunately she outpaced the company. The video below is a time-lapse of her drawing; the hatness madness starts at around 3:30.

For her next feat, perhaps Ashley should draw Gordon Freeman. Fighting all of Suikoden’s 108 Stars of Destiny. Who each have all of the Pokémon. Which are each wearing all of the Team Fortress 2 hats.

Valve Source Filmmaker makes a movie out of any Source game, now you're directing with Portals video

Creating machinima with a video game engine usually requires accepting one of two truths: either that it will require a lot of fudging or that it will have all the sophistication of playing with action figures. Valve Software isn't very happy with that dichotomy, which is why it's posting its very own movie-making tool, Source Filmmaker, as a public beta. Any game that runs on the Source engine, whether it's Left 4 Dead 2, Portal 2 or another in the family, can have gameplay run-throughs edited and dissected right down to custom facial expressions. As Valve expounds in the video after the break, throwing a gaming-grade PC at the task gives directors the advantage of seeing exactly how any changes will look in the final scene; there's no rough wireframes or pre-rendering here. Budding Francis Ford Coppolas can sign up for an invitation to the Filmmaker beta at the project page. If you'd just like to see how far someone can go with the end results, we've also included the latest Team Fortress 2 character profile video, Meet the Pyro, after the jump.
