Google’s 2016 was defined by ‘Pokémon Go,’ Olympics and Trump

Google's Year in Search summaries have a knack for capturing the cultural zeitgeist, and that's truer than ever in 2016. The company has published its top search trends for the year, and it clearly mirrors a tumultuous 12 months defined by the unexpe...

Nearly half of Flickr’s photo uploads come from smartphones

It's no secret that Flickr is popular with phone-toting photographers, but it's now reaching a tipping point. The Yahoo-owned image service has posted its year in review, and it notes that 48 percent of photo uploads now come from smartphones. That...

2015’s big hacks, attacks and security blunders

The security breaches, blunders, and disasters of 2015 tanked our trust in health insurance providers, credit agencies, the IRS, car manufacturers, connected toys for kids, and even "adult" dating sites. These stories shaped 2015, and forever changed...

Facebook’s 2015 review video puts the year in perspective

One of the internet's greatest achievements is its ability to connect disparate global communities in discussion and, at times, compassion -- and a lot of that conversation takes place on Facebook. The company's Year in Review, a video and list relea...

Twitter’s 2015 was defined by activism and its own tough luck

Twitter has posted its year in review, and it's clear that some things are truer than ever in the social sphere... including for Twitter itself. More often than not, the 2015 trends were a continuation of what you saw in 2014: activism dominated twee...

Kickstarter ends 2012 with $274 million in successful pledges, bigger projects

Kickstarter ends 2012 with $274 million in succesful pledges, bigger projects

It almost goes without saying that we love crowdfunded projects. If we use Kickstarter's 2012 wrap-up as a bellwether, there's many others out there like us. The number of successful projects shot up 53 percent last year to 18,109, and generated $274 million from pledges to projects that met their targets -- that's about 2.7 times more just in successful contributions than was raised in total for 2011, It's not hard to understand why if you've been following along. Between projects like Double Fine's adventure game, Ouya and Sundance Festival movies, Kickstarter in some cases has generated several times the revenue that a given client needed to get going. We won't venture a guess as to whether or not 2013 will see fiercer competition from the likes of Indiegogo or Christie Street, but any surge in truly viable, indie-built technology is good news in our book.

Facebook reveals your own 2012 Year in Review

Facebook builds your own 2012 Year in Review, puts you on par with Obama and Instagram

We've already seen Google's search-based turn at nostalgia for 2012. Facebook doesn't want to be left out, but it's swinging the focus to a very different subject than the usual politicians and pop stars: ourselves. Now that the Timeline has had a year to weave into our collective consciousness, Facebook is using it to show all the personal highlights of the past 12 months that it deems worthy, such as job changes, new friends and the many photos that reached our news feeds. Not that Facebook isn't willing to look at the bigger picture. It notes that US trends were dominated by elections, The Hunger Games and -- surprise -- Facebook's new buddy, Instagram. There's even more trends to explore at a special 2012 section of Facebook Stories, so you'll have plenty of options if you're as interested in your own life events as reliving the Olympics.
