Robot bears are coming for your grandparents

Not content to simply blame millennials for killing practically everything, baby boomers are now expecting the younger generations to care for them in their agedness. The nerve. Indeed, some 13 percent of the American population is now 65 or older, t...

Here Are The First Shots Of The Upcoming WALL-E LEGO Set

wall-e-lego-3

If you watched WALL-E and didn’t think he was the cutest imaginary robot ever created, perhaps there’s a little hole where your heart should be. So we’re excited to show you what appears to be the first pictures of the upcoming WALL-E set from LEGO. Originally the idea of Angus Maclane, an animator on the movie, LEGO announced back in February that the set would come to life. Now it has and here are what some think are sneak peaks. They showed up on a reseller website, ut now they’ve been taken down. Are they fake? We’re not sure, so obviously there’s no word on availability, but we hear pricing is rumoured to be between $40 and $65. One way or another, we suspect LEGO WALL-E is going to happen.

Official LEGO Wall-E Set is Better than Pizza Plants

UK store Smyths Toys jumped the gun and posted a few shots of the official LEGO Wall-E set on its website. The set is based on the LEGO Ideas submission of Pixar animator Angus MacLane. LEGO greenlit the idea last year, but as you can see it eventually made significant changes to Angus’ design to make the set more faithful to the movie.

Smyths says LEGO Wall-E has a flexible head, and you can open and close his hands and his torso. LEGO also added Wall-E’s logo and his solar charging indicator.

But as a /Film commenter pointed out, one thing LEGO erroneously left unchanged is the color of Wall-E’s neck. It should be a rusted orange, or at least yellow orange like his torso, as seen in this shot from the Pixar wiki.

Smyths has the set’s price at £39.99 (~$60 USD) with a December release date. I wonder if that’s enough time to change the neck parts, and maybe throw in a cockroach figure.

Pixar Animator’s Wall-E LEGO Kit Hits 10,000 Supporters on LEGO Ideas

If you have never seen the animated movie Wall-E, you have missed out on a cute and touching animated flick. Wall-E is a robot left behind to clean the Earth after humanity has moved on to live in giant luxury spaceships. While cleaning up and feeling lonely, the little yellow robot meets a flying robot girl named EVE and falls in love.

Wall-E always reminded me of a cross between Johnny 5 and E.T. for some reason. If you are a fan of the little robot, you will like to hear that a dude named Angus MacLane built a Wall-E LEGO robot kit and put it on LEGO’s Ideas site. What makes this even cooler is that Angus works at Pixar and was actually the directing animator for Wall-E, hence the accuracy of his model.

That Wall-E kit reached the 10,000 votes needed to move to the review process. Now the LEGO folks get to decide if the Wall-E kit becomes a reality or not. I hope it does, it looks really cool.

Wall-E Toy Robot Mod Adds Voice Recognition & Proximity Sensors

Adriá García of DIYMakers augmented a Wall-E toy by making it work with voice commands and giving it the means to move on its own and avoid obstacles. It doesn’t compact garbage or collect curios, but at least it can dance.

Adriá used an Arduino Uno as Wall-E’s new brain. Two infrared proximity sensors help the toy detect obstacles, actuators move its arms and head and two continuous servo motors power its tracks. Adriá used the EasyVR module for voice recognition.

Dude Builds An Adorably Awesome Real-Life Wall-E Robot

Wall-E Robot

Remember Wall-E? That scruffy but cute little bot who starred in his own movie five years ago? Well, now he’s made the ultimate of crossovers from the world of movies into real life. It didn’t involve magic or the involvement of studio giants, though. All it took to make it happen was one dedicated dude and his very good friend.

Mike McCaster and his buddy Mike Senna worked on their real-life Wall-E bot for years. It’s not just some R/C car that was taken apart and put together with a new frame either. They painstakingly crafted each piece for the robot from scratch.

Mike’s Wall-E has fully-functional treads and can rotate its head by 270 degrees. It can wiggle its eyebrows and also comes equipped with a “solar level charge” meter–just like Wall-E in the movies.

Next project for Mike and Mike? A real-life EVE bot.

Life-size R/C Wall-E Replica: Want-1

For YouTube’s Geek Week, Tested interviewed robotics enthusiast Mike McMaster about his remote-controlled and life-size Wall-E replica. McMaster is part of the Wall-E Builder’s Club, a group of hobbyists who started planning on building a replica of the lovable robot even before his movie came out.

Watch Tested’s video to find out the effort and ingenuity that Mike and his friends put in to make the robot:

As Mike said, you should join the Wall-E Builder’s Club if you want to make your own Wall-E. I wonder if they can make a flying EVE.

Atari 2600 + Wall-E = Atar-E

Technabob contributing author Conner Flynn has a hidden talent – and I’m not talking about walking and chewing gum at the same time. The man knows his way around an Atari 2600 like it’s nobody’s business. Now it’s been a while since he built his epic Atari 2600 guitar, but his latest mod looks like it was worth the wait… I give you Atar-E…

Conner found this Wall-E Learning Laptop at a thrift shop, but he didn’t see a laptop at all (neither do I). Instead, he saw the home for his next portable Atari 2600 mod. Inspired by the modding prowess of Ben Heck and Bacteria, he tore apart the Wall-E toy and gutted it.

atar e wall e atari 2600 4

His design incorporates an actual Atari 2600 circuit board, along with authentic Atari woodgrain pieces. He went off the board with the controller and used an NES D-Pad instead of a traditional Atari joystick. Isn’t that sacrilege? Dogs and Cats sleeping together!

atar e wall e atari 2600 3

The controller replaced the original keyboard found on the toy, and he even rigged it so the controller section can still fold shut when there’s no cartridge in place. One thing Conner struggled with was where to put a battery pack for the system, so he gave Wall-E a little backpack. Isn’t that cute?

Games are displayed on a tiny color LCD screen, mounted where the monochrome display on the original toy was located. On the one hand, you’ll have to squint a bit to play on this thing, on the other hand, the pixelated 8-bit graphics look so much better when they’re shrunk down like this.

While it would probably take you a ton of work to try and build one of these for yourself, Conner says he may soon list it for sale over on his online toy store over at Botropolis, so keep your eyes peeled. On second thought, peeled eyes sound like a really bad idea.
