RIM Becomes BlackBerry As BlackBerry 10 Launches

Yesterday was a big day for RIM. The company officially changed its name the BlackBerry, which honestly makes much more sense than RIM. That name change took effect immediately and the company also...

Transporter now shipping to Kickstarters, on pre-sale from retailers

Late last year Connected Data's Transporter, a private peer-to-peer storage solution, was revealed to the world through a Kickstarter campaign. Shortly thereafter we got to see the thing in person, and today those who funded Transporter will be happy to know that the company has begun fulfilling those orders. Not only that, folks who didn't go the Kickstarter route can pre-order a Transporter (or two) from Adorama and Datavision currently, an you'll be able to get one from Amazon, B&H Photo, J&R or PC Mall in the very near future. Interested? Prices start at $199 should you wish to supply your own 2.5-inch HDD, but those who don't want to go the BYOD route can get a 1TB drive thrown in for 100 bucks more, and a 2TB version can be had for $399.

New Dead Space 3 Game Modes Encourage Replay After You Finish the Game

Considering I’m a huge fan of science fiction, first person shooters, and video games, on paper you would expect me to enjoy the Dead Space franchise. In reality, I’ve never been a big fan of the series. There are a lot of people out there who love the franchise though, and its third installment is set to launch very soon. Ahead of launch the developers are offering up a few interesting new details on the game.

ds31

Dead Space 3 executive producer Steve Papoutsis has revealed that the game will have four additional difficulty modes that will only unlock after players beat the game one time. Two of these new modes will include Classic and Hardcore. Classic mode removes the new game’s crosshairs and resource management system to make it feel and play more like past games in the series. The Hardcore mode gives players only a single life for the entire campaign. Yikes.

Game+ mode lets you play through the game again with all of your weapons and arsenal that you finished the game with. DS3 will also feature an interesting Pure Survival mode where the players have to craft everything they use from ammo to health and weapons. In this mode there are no resources hidden around the map. That sounds like a cool challenge. Papoutsis also said that after launch the game would get new downloadable content. He wouldn’t give up any details of exactly what be in that DLC, but he said think “disturbing” to get an idea of what may be coming.

Dead Space 3 releases on February 5, 2013 on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Sony confirms its My Xperia smartphone recovery service, starts limited trials

Sony confirms its My Xperia smartphone recovery service, starts limited trials

Sony piqued its fair share of interest when it trademarked the My Xperia name for an online service -- what could it do in the cloud that it hadn't already done? Tracking lost devices, it seems. The now-official My Xperia service trial gives Sony phone owners the equivalent to a recovery tool like Find My iPhone or the early form of HTCSense.com, letting them pinpoint a missing Xperia and ping it, lock it down or wipe at least some of its data. Be ready for a very gradual launch, however. The very first wave of tests involves just Xperia acro S users in Nordic countries, and the trial will expand only to 2012 smartphones in the region that are still running Android 4.0. Those of us further abroad will have to wait for the eventual worldwide expansion if we want to easily find that Xperia S buried between the couch seats.

Bagpipes Made From PVC Pipe & Duct Tape

Instructables user Smartin014 made membrane bagpipes using only a plastic bag, CPVC pipes, duct tape, and — let’s be honest — a lot of love. Daaaaw! Smartin014 provides a step by step tutorial so you can make your very own. Dreams really do come true! There’s even a video of him playing the bagpipes. Which leads me to my next question: do you he wears a kilt made out of a grocery bag and duct tape? And do you think he wear drawls under it? I know, I knoww, it’s none of my business. But c’mon! You know you were wondering the same thing.

The Blanket Chair: Who Needs Snuggies?

There’s something awesome about comfortable chairs, in which you can spend hours reading, working or simply chilling. This concept chair integrates a blanket into an all-in-one comfy package, allowing you to take advantage of its cuddliness.

The Autumn/Winter Chair was created by Polish fashion designer Aga Brzostek. The cover of this chair is like a big jumper, which is one of the reasons why it has sweater-like functions. It’s perfect to use as a cozy place during chilly winter nights. Hard foam was used for the structure of the chair. The seat and backrest were covered in softer foam for even more comfort. The cover is made from reclaimed wool to help keep you warm and toasty.

The cover is adjustable and removable, allowing users to change the look of the chair to their own preferences. It’s even got a handy pocket for holding magazines or books.

While this is still just a one-off concept piece, I suppose you could always ask your grandma to knit a similar cover for your favorite chair, but that could be quite the undertaking.

Google delivers Grand Canyon panoramas to less-than-patient tourists

Google delivers Grand Canyon panoramas for lessthanpatient tourists

Google must take as long to sift through vacation photos as everyone else. A few months after it sent its Trekker cameras to sweep the Grand Canyon, the resulting panoramas are at last showing on Google Maps. The expansion gives us 360-degree views from paths spanning roughly 75 miles, including tougher routes like the South Kaibab Trail. The views won't fully convey the majesty of standing on the canyon's edge, but they're quicker than booking a hiking expedition in Arizona -- and certainly easier on the legs.
