Pink Bulletproof Backpack Exists

backpack

Do you have a terrible fear that your child might one day get shot in the back? It’s an awful thought, but it’s apparently one that occurred to a backpack manufacturer, who then decided to make a pink bulletproof backpack. It’s actually called Guard Dog Security ProShield Bulletproof Backpack and comes in both black and pink. It’s been tested against 9mm and .44 Magnum caliber rounds, and features a high-quality, lightweight Aramid construction. Weighing in at just 20 ounces, it’s not much heavier than a regular backpack, but will provide your child with protection in the section of their body containing their vital organs. At $152, it’s not exorbitantly priced.

Wearable Ultra Slim Laptop Sleeve/Backpack

idesk-wearable-ultra-slim-laptop-sleeve-backpack-xl

We’re being unimaginative and are having trouble coming up with scenarios where you might need a product like this, but we suppose they exist. It’s a laptop sleeve you wear on your back. This Laptop Sleeve Backpack is made from neoprene and a breathable air mesh back panel, and fits computers in sizes 10″ to 15″. It’ll sit flush against your back, and is slim enough to fit under a jacket. There’s a tiny bit more storage to accommodate other things, like the laptop’s charger we suppose. The exterior is water resistant, which means don’t stick it under water but it’ll withstand some rain without soaking up your delicate electronics.

It’s $25.

Movpack Is The World’s First Backpack Electric Vehicle

Walking is for chumps. Ok, no, not really. Walking is great, but it’s nice to have options. If you need to commute, are traveling, or otherwise have the desire to carry some clothes and a laptop, while simultaneously not wanting to get too tired walking, Movpack is for you. It’s a backpack that carries an electric skateboard, which uses a hand-held remote for control. You get a 9 mile range at speeds up to 15mph, and once the battery is depleted, you can charge it back up in 2 hours. The wheels remain on the outside so that even if you’re out of power you can still roll it around on the ground if you don’t feel like keeping the weight on your shoulders. It’s not a whole lot of weight, incidentally, with the whole thing clocking in at 17lbs.

Convenience and mobility, however, don’t come cheap. The Super Early Bird pledge is $999, with expected retail to be at $2,000!

Review: Minecraft Creeper Backpack

minecraft backpack Review: Minecraft Creeper Backpack
You can’t be part of the cool pack when you go back to school without a cool backpack. Say that 5 times fast for an a bonus point on your math homework. With this awesome new Minecraft Creeper Backpack Review: Minecraft Creeper Backpack your kid will be sitting with Zach and AC Slater instead at the nerd table with Screech. This 12″ wide X 18″ high x 7″ deep pack, as modeled by our junior intern above, is a fairly substantial size thanks to the Creeper’s little legs. The folks at ThinkGeek sent us over this TG exclusive for review. It has 3 compartments:

The smallest compartment has pockets to hold all your pencils, pens, notepads, and extra Minecraft blocks. We like that the Creeper’s legs are foam filled so the pack can stand upright when placed on the floor (even when empty). The bag is roomy, has double zippers for each pocket, adjustable straps, a thick durable fabric, and most importantly of all- it’s really cool and stands out in a crowd. It’s super easy to find your bag in a row of boring backpacks when yours is a Creeper. Minecraft is super hot this year (if you don’t know, ask your kids- they know). Our junior intern will be wearing this when school starts next week, will yours?

OhGizmo! Review: The OGIO No Drag Mach 3 Motorcycling Backpack

smIMG_65426

Riding around town on two wheels is an amazing experience, but it’s also one that inevitably causes you to compromise on many fronts. There’s no storage space on a motorcycle if you don’t have saddle bags, for instance, yet you might still want to bring stuff with you on your rides. Regular backpacks flop around in the wind at higher speeds and tend to become annoying after a while. We were looking for something designed specifically for riding; after some research, we settled on the above. We’ve spent the last few weeks testing the OGIO No Drag Mach 3 Backpack, and we’d like to spend the next few lines telling you about it. If you’re not in the mood for reading, out here we can tell you this much: it’s fantastic and well worth the money.

smIMG_65371
The Hardware
The OGIO No Drag Mach 3 backpack’s exterior is made from a single shot molded shell that’s mostly waterproof. It’s semi rigid, so you do end up looking somewhat like a turtle. However, it’s a cool look and ends up being distinctive rather than ugly or distracting. It also does mean that the bag keeps its shape under the pressure of the wind, which is exactly the point of designing it that way.

smIMG_65468
The Mach 3 opens up from the inside, from the part that touches your back, to reveal a very spacious interior lined in a high-visibility red fabric. This rear panel swivels forward, but not all the way, which prevents objects you might’ve stashed in the pockets to fall out. It is itself covered in a ton of compartments designed to hold a variety of things, from pens, to laptops, to pretty much anything you’d want to carry. There are zippered compartments, unzippered compartments, and compartments with holding straps.

smIMG_655412
On the sides, still on the inside, are two dedicated shoe storage compartments, which stops your shoes from moving around and getting your clothes dirty. And on the top part of the bag, accessible from the outside, is a fleece-lined zippered pocket made specifically to hold electronics, or glasses, or anything else that could get easily scratched.

On the exterior, you have some high quality shoulder straps, padded and comfortable, one side of which features a quick-release clasp. If you ride with a jacket (as you should), this is a very appreciated feature. There’s also a sternum strap that prevents the shoulder straps from sliding off, as well as a waist strap to keep the bag glued to your back. The final strap is a Nubuck-lined “helmet leash” which lets you carry your noggin-saver around with ease.

Interestingly, on the outside of the opening panel, touching your back, are two foam pads designed to create an air gap and increase ventilation. That’s a nice touch.

Rounding out the features is a hydration hole that makes it super simple to route a straw from a container kept on the inside, straight to your mouth. Going on long rides in the hot summer sun makes this a highly desirable capability.

The Performance
All the features in the world mean nothing if it’s not comfortable, or if there are glaring flaws. We’d like to say that we haven’t found anything to really complain about. It’s super comfy. There’s just something about the shape and positioning of the straps that makes it conform to your shoulders and back perfectly. It never pulls or tugs when riding at higher speeds. It’s super spacious and ingeniously designed. If we had to find something to criticize, we would have to say that the irregular and angular shape of the interior does make it harder to stash certain things without wasting space, like little boxes. It’s also hard to set down vertically on any surface since the bottom part is also angled.

But overall, the quality of the materials and the stitching is top notch. It’s a solid bag designed with ergonomics in mind, and all the little details OGIO thought of incorporating show that they kept a rider’s needs at the forefront. While its distinctive styling would suggest that this is a bag that favours form over function, we’re happy to report that it’s actually quite the opposite. The Mach 3′s style is clearly a result of OGIO’s designers looking for, and finding, an optimal solution to all of a rider’s carrying needs.

PROS
+ Semi-rigid outer shell doesn’t deform in the wind
+ Multiple pockets and compartments accommodate a number of objects
+ Spacious interior lined in a high-visibility red fabric
+ Quick release strap
+ Helmet leash
+ Dedicated shoe holders

CONS
- Irregular shape makes it hard to set down vertically
- Irregular shape makes it hard to carry squarer boxes without wasting space

Funnell Backpack Stores Easily Retractable Rain Jacket

Funnell-Backpack_3

When you’re out for an extended period of time, you’re always running the risk of being caught in the rain. You’re not made of sugar, boy, so it ain’t so bad, right? But why get wet if you don’t have to? The Funnell backpack looks like any old regular bag, but it features a built-in waterproof jacket that you can pull out in seconds. The jacket covers both you and the backpack so you’re completely protected from that pesky rain.

Made primarily with motorcycle riders in mind, the Funnell is still perfect for the trekker, the cyclist or any outdoors enthusiast. It features several storage compartments, and is made from high quality materials. There’s a back protection panel, and a dedicated laptop compartment, as well as a a drainage tube that allows you to store your wet jacket back in the bag without worrying that it will get smelly.

It’s a $188 pledge to get yours, assuming the Kickstarter completes its funding goals.

Backpack with a 3-Pronged Outlet

three prong backpack Backpack with a 3 Pronged Outlet
Now this seems like a pretty good idea. From the “why hasn’t anyone thought of this before” department comes a Kickstarter for the GoPlug powered bag. The idea is simple- a backpack with a battery pack inside and a 3-pronged outlet to plug ANYTHING in. Other powered bags (and we reviewed a good one here) typically only have a USB plug or similar to charge your gadgets. With this bag you can plug in your laptop! That’s huge.
goplug power bag Backpack with a 3 Pronged Outlet
Great for travelers. There’s also a pair of USB ports there too. The GoPlug bag has a large capacity 15000mAh battery inside, which is good enough to charge an iPhone up fully 7 times over. The outlet swivels for maximum flexibility too. Now of course the 3rd prong is not going to be grounding your electronics like most “real” 3 prong outlets, but at least you can plug in grounded plugs. Good idea and they plan on making other types of bags with the outlet built-in should this one get fully funded on Kickstarter. (via gizmodo)
