Algorithmically Crafted Cutting Boards

What initially began as a project to design door handles in Grasshopper design software, the shapes of the Pebble collection were inspired by the designer’s curiosity and explorations using algorithms. The result is 7 uniquely shaped boards that can be used for a variety of applications from serving to cutting. Included with each is a smooth, glossy porcelain dish or cup to compliment the natural wood material. They’re as curvy and comfortable to hold as they are tough to withstand years of use, making them a timeless addition to any kitchen!

This makes a whole lot of sense. The New Wave Knife Block design combines knife storage with the thing you are most likely to use the knife on- the cutting board. The wave-like design makes for an efficient and elegant countertop display. Granted it does take up quite a bit more space than a knife block alone but you could store other things atop the cutting board when it’s not in use I guess.

Designed by Jowan Baransi, the idea is to keep your most commonly used tools handy. A slight issue might be the fact that you can’t lift up the cutting board for cleaning without dumping your knives out (watch your fingers and toes!) but most wood cutting boards can simply be wiped clean with a rag or paper towel anyway. Cool design concept, maybe someone will start making it.

This is one of the smartest cutting boards we’ve seen because it’s also a digital scale. The GKILO is a regular wooden cutting board with a few tricks up it’s sleeve. Hidden on the side is an integrated LED display that shows the weight of whatever’s on the board. Too heavy? Just cut a bit off. So that’s great for when you’re cooking and chopping up food, but what about when you’re not? Flip the cutting board over and the display has a whole different function:

A clock! Yes, we are that excited about a clock. And since we’re in 2014 here, of course it connects wirelessly to your smartphone via a dedicated app. There’s always an app, right? Tell the app what food you’re cutting and it can recommend cooking times, etc. Then use the app to turn the cutting board’s clock into a timer. There’s even a capacitive touch sensor so you can reset the scale and clock right from the cutting board. Future kitchen technology is here today. (via gizmodo)
