TIO_1

Every snorkeler wants the opportunity to go just a little deeper for an even better view of what they can see from the surface! The problem is, not every snorkeler wants to gets their scuba certification. If only there was an intermediary option… like TIO by designer Ivo Wawer. It’s a diving system that combines the simplicity of snorkeling and the advantages of under water breathing while diving. A small compressed air cylinder allows for a few minutes of breathing under water, while extending the snorkeling experience. It’s the best of both worlds! Using this unique system, snorkelers have the opportunity to observe corals and shoals of fish, shoot photos under water, dive on kayak adventure tours or to simply enjoy the experience of breathing under water without all the diving equipment. It’s the best companion for snorkelers and novice divers everywhere!

Rebreathe Underwater

ORB is a diving helmet that uses a modern technology called “rebreathing” to recycle your own oxygen in order to breathe underwater. While most scuba equipment is heavy, bulky and uncomfortable, the lightweight unit is compact and easier to move with. The result is a relaxed and enhanced diving experience. Better yet, it’s equipped with built-in Bluetooth to communicate with other divers and socialize in the underwater environment.

In Deep Trouble

Deep sea diving is great fun but not without its own risks. Running out of oxygen or simply feeling distressed can be a dangerous thing to happen. The Diving Emergency Sharing Device allows divers to share their supply of oxygen with two others and even send out an SOS signal during distress or emergency situations. Quite a helpful device!

Sony Xperia Z3 Unboxed Underwater… and It Works Just Fine

It’s one thing to say that a smartphone can survive water splashes; it’s another altogether to say that the phone can actually work underwater. That is exactly what Sony promised with the Xperia Z3 smartphone that runs Android.

z3 watermagnify

The phone has front and rear cameras like all modern smartphones and it can even be used to take video and photos underwater. I’m sure you have seen unboxing videos before where geeks get a new device and make a video of themselves taking it out of the box. The gang at Carphone Warehouse in the UK took unboxing somewhere new with an underwater unboxing video for the Z3.

Not only does the diving helmet-wearing host unbox the smartphone under water, he also uses it to take pictures and video of the crew filming the unboxing. The phone holds up extremely well, and manages to take some incredibly sharp pictures despite being underwater. The cardboard box and phone accessories on the other hand…

Triton Respirator Concept Works Like Gills

Harry Potter has gillyweed, while non-magical folks like you and me have the Triton respirator. The concept device is a contraption that lets a person “breathe” underwater by functioning as gills.

If you read Harry Potter, then you’ll know how crucial gillyweed was for him during the Twi-Wizard cup tournament. If you didn’t, well, it’s basically a magical plant that gave the person who ate it temporary gills.

While Triton won’t make gills sprout out of your neck, it works in a similar fashion.

Respirator Concept0magnify

The concept design was thought up by Korean industrial designer Jeabyun Yeon and it essentially would work like the gills on a fish. Its wearer simply has to bite down on the device’s mouthpiece. It will then strip oxygen from the surrounding water and let you breathe as if you were on land and not underwater.

Respirator Concept1 620x348magnify

The Triton uses a series of filters woven together so water molecules can’t pass through. It’s also fitted with a micro-compressor that, in theory, will be able to pull dissolved oxygen out of the water and into its wearer’s breathing tank.

This concept might seem far off now, but who knows? It might turn into a reality in the future.

Scuba Breath

My perception of a pristine and peaceful scuba dive changed when I went for my first dive off the Great Barrier Reef. It looks so easy in the movies, but the breathing underwater with an oxygen mask is difficult. Don’t let those practice lessons in the swimming pool fool you! To make it easier for us, here is the Triton Oxygen Mask For Diving. It is a very convenient oxygen respirator concept that allows us to breathe under water for a long time by simply biting it. It also does not require the skill of breathing in and out while biting mouthpiece like conventional respirator.

  • Triton uses a new technology of artificial gill model.
  • It extracts oxygen under water through a filter in the form of fine threads with holes smaller than water molecules.
  • This is a technology developed by a Korean scientist that allows us to freely breathe under water for a long time.
  • Using a very small but powerful micro compressor, it compresses oxygen and stores the extracted oxygen in storage tank.
  • The micro compressor operates through micro battery.
  • The micro battery is a next-generation technology with a size 30 times smaller than current battery that can quickly charge 1,000 times faster.

Triton is a 2013 sadi product innovation studio project.

Holy Smoke!

C-Thru is a helmet that is designed to help firefighter walk through dense smoke during smoke diving search and rescue missions. Time constrains of six minutes per mission, makes it imperative that the gear is optimal. C-thru gives them the edge thanks to the wire-frame vision of the interior geometry, surrounding the smoke diver. Using technological enhancements, the helmet provides a visual map of the interiors so that it becomes easy for the firefighter to locate the victims.

This is how it works:

  • C-Thru’s vision system integrates many technologies to aid firefighters, such as a head-mounted projection display, optical thermal camera, cloud computing, selective active noise cancellation and target acquisition.
  • The optical thermal camera captures the imaging of the surrounding area and sends the data to the smoke diver leader’s handheld device.
  • The data is calculated there and sent back to the helmet.
  • Newly generated 3D wire-frame data is projected by the head-mounted projectors through the retro-reflective front visor of the helmet.
  • This wire-frame outline of their surroundings helps firefighters find a path through the building and locate victims.

Vulcain Nautical Cricket 1970 Watch: A Classic Gets Remade

I remember that when I was a kid, it was a big deal when my dad got a Seiko analog watch that had a built-in alarm clock. It was definitely something different, and it looked better than a lot of digital watches. The Vulcain Nautical Cricket Watch was an early analog alarm watch from 1970, which is now being remade.

Dubbed the Vulcain Nautical Seventies, the reissue has a 42mm stainless steel case that’s 17.6mm thick and comes with both a black leather and orange diving strap.

The alarm is a Cricket caliber, and its face has shaded rings to calculate diving decompression times. And speaking about diving, the watch is water resistant to a whopping 300 meters.

The Vulcain Nautical Seventies Watch will be released soon, with only 300 of the pieces to be produced. The price hasn’t yet been announced, but other Vulcain watches sell for $6,000 to $10,000.

AquaLung Dreamlab Oceanwings: For Flying Underwater

I’ve seen wingsuits used in basejumping and skydiving, but I guess it makes sense to use something akin to those suits underwater, since some animals like ray fish use their “wings” to fly underwater.

aqualung dreamlab oceanwings wingsuit

The Oceanwings neoprene suit from AquaLung Dreamlab is supposed to help humans in their subaquatic activities. The suit was created by French designer Guillaume Binard and Frédérique Gouin. It looks like the suit lets you sort of “fly” through the water without much energy expense, though it will probably take some time to get used to the way that it makes the water flow around your body.

You can see the suit in action in this underwater video directed by Jérôme Espla, featuring Pierre Frolla as he dives into the abyss.
