Someone Put a Zoom Lens on a Game Boy Camera

It’s been 20 years since the strange little Game Boy Camera came on the scene, giving us terrible, low-res, black and white images. Still, kids liked it. It was a $50 digital camera, and it was fun. People still play with it – like designer Bastiaan Ekeler, who recently hacked together a Canon EF lens mount adapter for the camera.

He designed and 3D printed the 1.4x adapter/extender, but it required a bit of trimming and filing to get it to properly attach to the disassembled GBC, but eventually, he accomplished this feat and has made the Game Boy Camera much more capable. Now, you probably wouldn’t want to try and tote this with you to snap vacation photos. It’s way too awkward, even if you love the results.

128 x 112-pixel monochrome images have never looked better. Kids 20 years ago could only dream of doing this with their Game Boy Camera. I’m tempted to try my hand at this so I can take some cool Game Boy photos too.

Game Boy Alarm Clock: It’s Super Mario Time!

This alarm clock looks exactly like the Game Boy you used to play on the go. It even has working buttons. The only difference is that instead of playing classic games, this version is all about waking you up in the morning.

This officially-licensed Nintendo Game Boy alarm clock plays the Super Mario Land theme when the alarm goes off. This thing has a lot more personality, not to mention nostalgia, compared to waking up with your smartphone.

I think there have been other Game Boy clocks, but this one has all of the right details. The only thing I would change (only because I’m a nerd) is that it needs to have little cartridges that change the wake-up sounds. A Legend of Zelda cart with that theme, Tetris for that one, and so on. That way you keep the nerds coming back for more, having to buy new cartridges all the time. I’m still buying this – I just can’t help wanting more.

It’s just $36.99 with free shipping over at Merchoid. The clock is expected to ship on March 30th, but pre-order quantities are limited so you better get one while you can.

Hyperkin Ultra GB: An Aluminum Game Boy Classic

Nostalgia among gaming nerds is big business. The NES and SNES Classic Edition retro consoles are still selling out. Obviously a Game Boy Classic Edition must be on the way from Nintendo, right? Maybe, but Hyperkin is working on its own remake and beating them to the punch. The Hyperkin Ultra GB is still in development, but it already looks amazing.

It may look a lot like the original Game Boy, but this handheld’s housing is made from aluminum. It has the original’s volume and contrast dials, however the final version will have a third dial to adjust the new backlit LCD display. That backlight can also be turned off, if you want an authentic and annoying true Game Boy experience, or can be set to that greenish tint you might remember.

Other features include a built-in six-hour battery, USB-C port for charging, stereo speakers, and left and right audio-out connections. Yes, it’s true that game Boy games only generate mono sound, but the speakers are there because the Ultra GB is also being optimized for chiptune musicians who use the Game Boy to create electronic tunes.

There’s no way that Nintendo would have made a replica of this quality. Look at it. It’s beautiful. Solid. I love it. Hyperkin is hoping to have it ready for late Summer of this year, for under $100. It will play all of your classic Game Boy games, and maybe even your Game Boy Color games.

Nintendo Game Boy Classic Watch Sadly Doesn’t Play Tetris

While it wasn’t the first handheld game system, the Nintendo Game Boy was the first one that really mattered. Despite the limitations of its green and grey LCD screen, it offered up a smart design, and some truly addictive games.

While you can still pick up a classic Game Boy on eBay starting around $25, it’s not the sort of thing you’re going to carry with you every day. On the other hand, this fun gamer’s wristwatch lets you have a Game Boy on your person all the time.

This officially-licensed Nintendo watch looks exactly like the classic Game Boy, just shrunk down to wrist size. It would have been super cool if they made it play games, but alas it simply tells the time on its LCD screen. The face buttons are just there for show too, and you set the time using a button on its side. Still, it looks neat, and is a fun tribute to a classic gaming system of yore.

If you want one, drop by ThinkGeek, who has the exclusive on these for just $14.99(USD).

This Keychain-Sized Game Boy Emulator Actually Works

Builder Vincent Buso uploaded this short video demo of the Keymu. It is basically the Game Boy Advance SP shrunk down to an ultra-portable keychain size. It is awesome. If you have fingers small enough to use it.

It has four buttons instead of two and it runs ROMs using an Intel Edison chip. The extra buttons mean you could play Sega Genesis and some Super Nintendo games if you wanted to, so it’s not limited to just playing Game Boy Advance games.

Want to build your own? Vincent is uploading detailed instructions on HackADay for anyone who wants to give it a go. Right now there is just an introduction, an image gallery, and one blog post, but more is coming.

Now how do I shrink my fat fingers to play this thing?

Nintendo Game Boy Wallet: Now You’re Paying with Power

Do you miss the days of Game Boy? Well, now you can keep one in your pocket once again, and this one is much more compact. This cool bi-fold wallet looks just like a classic Game Boy.

It won’t play Super Mario Land, or accept any Game Boy cartridge, but it will hold all of your cash, cards, and ID. It has five card slots, one ID slot, and one slot for bills. No batteries needed. You can even open it up and access all of your stuff in low light! That’s an amazing improvement over the original.

Show off your love for vintage Nintendo with this cool wallet. It’s just $19.99(USD) from ThinkGeek.

Nintendo Game Boy Piggy Bank: Insert Coin, Start Saving

Think about all of the money you spent on Game Boy games back in the day. It probably adds up to a lot of dough. Too bad that handheld couldn’t collect money for you and save it. Well, now it can. This Nintendo Game Boy Piggy Bank accepts your coins not your cartridges.

This bank looks just like the classic Game Boy console. It has the same retro grey style and simple button layout, same rounded brick shape too. Plus, there are no batteries to worry about and you can even use it in low lighting, which you can’t say about the original. It will help you get some of that Game Boy cartridge money back all these years later.

Grab one over at Entertainment Earth for just $10.99(USD) and start saving with power!

Nintendo Game Boy Notebook: Push Start to Sketch

It’s a notebook. It’s a Game Boy. Note Boy! Game Book! Now you’re playing with paper! This notebook looks like the classic Game Boy from your youth. But it does more than just look awesome. It has a holographic Super Mario Land screen that appears to move.

You know what would be cool to draw inside of this notebook? The inner circuitry of a Game Boy! Maybe some full Super Mario Land levels done up flip-book style so you can watch it all animated. Either that or you can actually write in it and use it as a journal, but I like my first ideas better.

You can grab one over at ThinkGeek today for just $7.99(USD).

Game Boy Heat Change Mug Doesn’t Play Tetris

I remember when the Nintendo Game Boy came out back in the day and we were all super excited that you could play games on the go. The graphics were terrible though. If you want to relive that mobile retro gaming action, the Game Boy 16oz heat change mug is just the ticket.

This square coffee mug holds 16 ounces of liquid. If said liquid is hot, it will change the black screen of the Game Boy on the cup into a green screenshot from Super Mario Bros. It’s made from ceramic, but you can’t microwave it due to the special heat-sensitive stuff.

The mug will set you back $12.99(USD) at ThinkGeek.

Super Retro Boy Brings the Game Boy Back with Some Upgrades

The Game Boy has had it’s time in the sun and then went away. There’s no hint that Nintendo plans to re-launch it either, despite great sales of the NES Classic. At least we have the Super Retro Boy.

This replica of the original Nintendo Game Boy looks alot like the original, but that’s where the similarities end. For starters, it will play all of your original Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges. It features a scratch and shatter-resistant TFT HD display and a 2,500 mAh rechargeable battery good for up to 10 hours. One thing to note is that there are no shoulder buttons, and instead there are two extra face buttons.

I definitely want one. Hopefully they will be easier to find than the NES Classic Mini. You can check out a prototype of the Super Retro Boy in action in BWone’s video below:

Super Retro Boy is expected to be released in North America around August 2017, with a target price of about $80(USD). That’s money that Nintendo could have had if they would release something like.
