This glass and marble lamp creates an air of mystery and harmony with contrasting materials

Think of a lamp and you will probably immediately imagine a bulb on a metal pole, a circular base, and a conical lampshade. More modern designs often involve simpler geometric shapes like bars with rotating arms. Of course, there’s a wide world of lamp designs that cater to an equally wide range of needs and tastes. Some even tell stories with their forms, materials, and production. This beautiful lamp, for example, exudes an ethereal character as well as a sense of timelessness, two different properties brought together in graceful harmony thanks to the interplay of contrasting elements made in very different ways.

Designer: Omar Godínez for Peca Estudio

Some materials carry a distinctive character simply by their very nature. Rock is hard and unmoving, wood is warm and tactile, and paper is light and flexible. Some materials even stand diametrically opposed to each other, but just like many things in nature, sometimes complement each other so perfectly that it almost feels like they were made for each other from the start.

The Talla Lamp is a gorgeous design born of that duality, combining the ethereal fragility of glass with the timeless memory of marble. One feels like it would break at the slightest force, while the other would break other things instead. And yet the spherical glass sits calmly and gracefully on top of the marble prism, fitting snugly in each other’s embrace. The small bulb inside creates an otherworldly light that shines through the tinted glass and casts eerie shadows on the marble stand, illuminating and mesmerizing at the same time.

The glass half of the lamp has its own story to tell. It is made using free-blown techniques that make each piece truly unique. That complements the marble base, made using more mechanical methods, whose patterns also differ from block to block. As such, each Talla lamp carries its own character and story, a subtle nod to the personal stories we ourselves make every day in our life’s journey.

Martin Liberty table lamps bring stunning beauty and luxury with intricate floral fabrics

Lamps do more than just bring light into a space, especially if they are always in your view. They can make or break the ambiance of your room just by how they look, whether they match the rest of your interior or stand out like a sore thumb. And then there are designs that call attention to themselves on their own, raising the atmosphere of your living area to new heights. Nothing does that better than a lamp specifically made with luxurious materials and intricate details, just like these eye-catching table lamps that add a touch of class in any space with shades that put a small canopy of flowers over soft, warm lights.

Designer: Inga Sempe (HAY x Liberty)

These beautiful table lamps combine two designs that have already stood the test of time and design trends. The Matin Lamp is a contemporary interpretation of a common lighting fixture, utilizing a steel wire frame to condense the form to its most basic. At the same time, however, its unique pleated lampshade gives it a distinctive character to the product, creating a play of shapes and shadows that contrast with its plain block of color.

The Matin Liberty rendition of the table lamp, however, swaps out those uniform hues with highly detailed patterns that have become a signature of the luxury department store’s fabrics. The fabrics give off a harmonious contrast of order and chaos with repeating patterns that were seemingly formed from a spray of flowers, petals, and leaves. It’s a mesmerizing visual that has made Liberty a luxury icon when it comes to fabrics, which is being applied to these already luxurious lamps in an interesting way.

Combining the pleated form of the original Matin Lamp lampshade with the cotton fabrics of Liberty creates this unique visual experience that easily draws your attention to it but doesn’t become overbearing or tiring. It even shapes the lamp’s light in a different way, depending on the hue of the floral patterns. Lighter colors further diffuse the soft light coming from the LED bulb, while darker shades focus the light downward like a directional lamp. This makes each lamp deliver a different experience, whether through its visual pattern or lighting effect.

The Matin Liberty Table Lamp brings a fusion of elegance and fashion wherever they’re set up. It can act either as a statement piece on its own or as a complement to floral patterns on your wall or upholstery. It definitely gives a different vibe from other lamps, even luxurious ones, that is sure to make you the talk and envy of your social circles.

These Smart & Sleek Lighting Designs Incorporate Wireless Charging Trays

I love a beautifully-designed lighting design because I truly believe a really great one has the ability to illuminate a space – both literally, and metaphorically. Besides the physical light that it quite obviously emits, a well-designed lighting design can add manifolds of personality and charisma to a room or space. They can function as sculptural pieces, that are an extension of your personal taste and preference, truly exhibiting the richness and niche-ness of your curation capabilities, or if they’re the portable kind you can carry them along with you to illuminate anything anytime anywhere. And an excellent collection of lighting designs that perfectly combines ambiance and functionality is Pablo Designs’ Carousel.

Designer: Pablo Designs

The Carousel series by Pablo Designs is really an interesting one, as it effortlessly merges ambiance, aesthetics, and utility. The series consists of two designs – a table lamp and a floor lamp. Both lamps incorporate wireless charging mobile trays in their form while emitting a warm, glare-free light. The charging tray is equipped with two wireless charging zones, and a USB-C charging port, to support a variety of devices.

A star feature of both the lamps is their base, which is essentially a transparent fluted acrylic cylinder diffuser that emits indirect lighting using a hidden flat panel LED control with full dimming capabilities. The Carousel Table (the table lamp) is a brilliant fit for bedsides and desktops, while the Carousel Floor (the floor lamp) can be placed next to furniture pieces to shed light on them. The floor lamp is the winner of the 2023 AZ Awards. Both models include base diffusers in clear and bronze tiny options that can be beautifully teamed up with a spun steel tray available in matte white, terracotta, or black finish. The trays are available in 12-inch and 16-inch diameters.

The Carousel collection is an excellent example of how technology, materials, and geometry can be combined to create innovative human-centered designs that feature environmentally-responsible LED light systems in terms of energy consumption. The Carousel lamps would be a great addition to your home office setup, or to other more personal rooms.

This beautiful table lamp of marble and glass is a piece of art you can place anywhere

Lamps inject life into our homes and our lives through their light, but that isn’t the only way they can enhance a space’s ambiance. Unless they’re embedded into ceilings and walls, the forms that lamps take can add to a room’s appeal or even become the main attraction. This is especially true for lamps that are always within view like lamp stands and table lamps, and their designs can easily make or break a room’s design. Lamps come in all shapes, sizes, and materials, but a large number use metals or plastic-plastics for both durability and style. This table lamp, however, bucks that trend and uses heftier and more solid materials to create a distinctive form that is quite portable despite its heavy construction.

Designer: Terrence Woodgate x Case Furniture

A lamp that uses heavy, solid materials is almost like an irony. Like the adjective that bears its name, light is often associated with concepts like weightlessness, formlessness, and bright colors. Opaque glass and stone might be the last things you’d link to light, but those are exactly the types of materials that the Solid Table Light employs, and it’s that very same juxtaposition that adds to the character and beauty of this striking lamp.

The lamp’s base is made of marble, either Serpentine, Nero Marquina, or Carrara. The stone’s unique visual properties make it a favorite for walls, floors, and pillars, but here it also creates a mesmerizing effect as light bounces off its polished surface. Additionally, no two pieces of marble are alike, guaranteeing that each of these lamps has their own unique appearance and personality.

Sitting on top of the marble base is a hand-blown opal glass shade that is acid-etched to diffuse the light. Its soft glow stands in contrast to the beautiful yet harsh marble below it, while also accentuating the heaviness of the entire product. Ironically, this lamp is almost asking to be moved and placed anywhere your mood dictates thanks to its lack of cables at least while it’s not charging.

Although the Solid Table Light isn’t exactly new, this latest iteration sneaks the word “Rechargeable” in between. It even uses a replaceable quick-fit battery so you won’t have to worry about where to plug it in or about the longevity of the lamp. While its 4kg weight might make you break a sweat, this wireless operation makes the Solid Rechargeable Table Light a bit more versatile and flexible in its location, allowing you to place it not only where you need some light but also where you need to add a bit of flair and style to your space.

This charming origami-inspired cube brings both light and power anywhere you need them

Daytime isn’t the only time you can enjoy the freedom that summer brings. The night can also be a source of adventure, fun, or even relaxation, especially when experienced outdoors and away from your usual abode. Staying outdoors at night, however, can bring up a few anxieties, not least of which is having a convenient light source or, more importantly, a power source for your indispensable gadgets. That often means lugging along some lantern or lamp in addition to a power bank, two things you need to be mindful of and two things you could potentially lose. Consider your worries now calmed with an innovative and sustainable travel companion that will illuminate your darkest nights, save your dying phone, and even protect you from mosquitoes!

MEGAPUFF is easy to open and goes flat pack with a quick twist! The origami design is simple and elegant.

They say that looks can be deceiving, and the MEGAPUFF definitely lives up to that aphorism, but in a very good way. At first glance, the white box looks like a simple yet beautiful paper lantern, not so different from traditional lanterns used in Japanese festivals, except perhaps for its cubical shape. The MEGAPUFF is, of course, quite literally a lantern, but that’s just the proverbial tip of the iceberg of what this is capable of. Because despite its minimalist appearance, it packs quite a lot of features that will make any activity more memorable, day or night, indoor or outdoor, no matter the season.

MEGAPUFF is both a portable lantern and power bank and unlike other combination products, it makes no compromises on either. A 4,000 mAh battery delivers all the power you need to charge up your mobile device through a USB-C port or deliver sufficient light to let you see in the dark of night or the darkness of your room. MEGAPUFF can be juiced up via the same USB-C connection, or you can charge it under the sun, providing you with a sustainable way to enjoy the conveniences of modern life, wherever you might be.

Seven light settings.

The light that MEGAPUFF provides is nothing to scoff at either, reaching a maximum of 300 lumens at its brightest. You won’t blind yourself, of course, especially with seven different settings for different light temperatures and intensities, including warm or bright, low or high, or a combination of both. There’s also a blinking red light setting that you won’t find in any portable lamp. This unexpected feature helps keep you safe in the dark, whether you’re riding a bike or signaling for an emergency. Red light therapy is also cited to help treat anxiety, depression, and PTSD, but it seems to have the opposite effect on mosquitoes and drives these bloodsuckers away instead.

Best of all, MEGAPUFF won’t take up much space in your car or camping gear. Thanks to origami technology, the 6.2×6.2 inch cube collapses down to a 0.75-inch high flat-packed square with a simple twisting motion. You don’t even have to turn the light off before collapsing or expanding the lantern, making it trivial to pack up or set up in a flash. This transforming cube is made from durable and eco-friendly sail cloth, leaving you with no worries about the product’s longevity or its effects on the environment. Whether you’re enjoying the great outdoors or lounging indoors, the MEGAPUFF collapsible lamp and battery will give you both light and power so that you can stop fretting and start enjoying your time.

This stoneware lamp exudes an artistic yet playful character that livens up any desk

The primary purpose of lamps is to bring us light, but they don’t have to be limited to that task only. This is especially true for fixtures that always stay within our vision, whether they’re hanging from ceilings, stuck to walls, or standing on our desks. Because we tend to always notice things that we always see, these lamps can have a significant effect on our mood and state of mind. A poorly designed lamp, no matter how bright, will end up annoying us, consciously or subconsciously. Conversely, a lamp with a delightful design will brighten not only your space but also your mood, just like these cute yet heavyweight desk lamps that almost make you want to play with them all day long.

Designer: J Schatz

Something doesn’t have to actually be a toy to inspire a playful mood. Bright colors, irregular or curved shapes, and unbalanced or asymmetrical arrangements can already have our minds immediately thinking fun thoughts, perhaps a ball game, a playground set, or toy blocks. The Spot On Desk Lamps have these elements in droves, and they create an almost whimsical atmosphere on any desk it stands on.

There are three distinct parts that make up this rather vibrant lamp, all simple shapes and all derived from a circle. The base is a thick disc and the stem that stands off-center is a simple cylinder. The lamp shade itself is a sphere that seems to stick precariously near the top of the stand. While many lamp designs aim for symmetry and a visual of harmony, the Spot On evokes a sense of action and dynamism, as if the lamp is ready to fall and roll at any moment. Of course, it’s all just in our minds, because the desk lamp is as steady and stable as a piece of stone.

The pieces are indeed made of stoneware, individually handcrafted, in fact. Each piece has a different color from the rest, and there are eight color combinations in total. Although different, the colors still produce a certain beauty and harmony, painting a character that is lively but not discordant. There’s an almost Bauhaus-like theme here as well, with the use of opposite or asymmetrical shapes and colors. Suffice it to say, it’s an attractive piece, no matter which way you look at it.

Of course, a desk lamp is not just a piece of decoration, and the Spot On lamp’s 5W LED bulb makes sure of that. It delivers the same brightness as a 60W standard bulb but at a fraction of the energy consumption. This bulb, along with the structural parts that keep the lamp pieces together, is invisible to the viewer who only sees the lamp itself and its cord. It’s a design that reaches a degree of simplicity and minimalism without looking drab or mundane. It’s definitely spot on, pun totally intended, for a lamp that can light up not just your desk but also your life.

How this minimalist lamp creates an otherworldly glow that connects the heavens and earth

Some lamps are designed to simply provide proper lighting for us to see, while others are made to set the right atmosphere and mood. Some even try to put you into a meditative state, pulling your head into a more peaceful space, perhaps to be able to think more clearly. Lamps accomplish these through a variety of means, like the brightness or temperature of the light they emit or through the design of the very lamp itself. This small table lamp uses both techniques to create such an atmosphere, using nothing more than simple shapes that evoke imagery of the earth and the sky connected by a single beam of ethereal light that seemingly appears out of nowhere.

Designer: Li Wenkai

In its deactivated state, the magnetic light that stands in the middle looks nothing more than an extremely thin rod or wire stretched from end to end. In isolation, this filament’s bright glow might even call to mind a welding rod that shines brightly only because of extreme heat, not exactly the calming imagery that the lamp is aiming for.

Thanks to the use of simple shapes and thoughtful composition, however, this thin rod of light is able to send a very different message instead. The base has a very low conical shape that slopes gently upward, almost like a solitary mountain rising majestically in the middle of a plain. Directly above it is a small metal ball, representing the heart of the heavens or the sun floating above. A single, thin beam of light connects these two, like a space laser or a heavenly bridge that makes heaven and earth meet.

This straight beam, however, is also an illusion. That filament is apparently flexible and can be bent when the magnetic metal sphere falls from the sky. This creates a more fluid curve that is reminiscent of the beautiful aurora of night skies. The lamp’s transparent polycarbonate body not only gives a full view of that light, it also creates a visual illusion of multiple strands of light growing out of the base, resulting in a more interesting display of light art.

This Auge Light Mini has very simple controls, a single touch button to cycle between two levels of brightness and the off state. This lets the user select the kind of visual effect they want, whether it’s a soft and eerie glow or a bright beam that lights up the space. Neither is strong enough to serve as a work or even a reading light, but the lamp will definitely help get you in the right head space for some deeper thinking or maybe even for a nap.

3D-printed pendant lamps spin beauty out of recycled ocean plastic

There’s a reason why plastic is so widely used despite all the campaigns against its negative impact on the environment. They’re cheap to make, somewhat durable, and quite long-lasting. That last part is, of course, the problem with this material, especially when they end up in our waters. The ideal solution would be the completely get rid of the use of plastic, but that is neither realistic nor feasible in the short run. In addition to reducing our reliance on this harmful material, we also have the ability to repurpose plastic these days and use them in ways they weren’t initially designed for. They can, for example, become the foundations of other products, like these pendant lamps that take those ocean-bound wastes and transforms them into beautiful pieces for your home.

Designer: LightArt

We always hear the exhortation to reuse or recycle plastic, but, truth be told, there is only so much you can do with used products, at least without changing them drastically. It admittedly takes a lot more energy to actually break down plastic into new usable material, but it also offers more flexibility in what can be made, especially with today’s 3D printing technologies. These lamps, for example, use 100% recycled polypropylene plastic that has been turned into pellets that are then fed to 3D printing machines.

That process is the simplified version, however, because different kinds of plastic result in different properties. Nearshore plastic like fishing nets, trawls, and ropes, for example, result in a greenish color that gives the Seagrass pendant lamps their verdant hues. The creamy tones of the Sea Foam set, on the other hand, are the result of using ocean-bound plastic bags and water bottles without additive coloring.

The Ocean Coil pendant lamp collection isn’t just about upcycling plastic, however. There is also clear craftsmanship involved, especially in how the lamps look like hand-spun pottery. You definitely wouldn’t have guessed they were practically made from trash because of their elegant appearance, which is precisely the point. The lamps prove that there doesn’t have to be any significant difference between products made from virgin plastic and those spun from recycled ones.

Of course, the process of turning recycled plastic into stunning products isn’t an easy one, at least not yet. There is definitely plenty of room for improvement, especially in minimizing the energy and water requirements when turning plastic into usable pellets. There’s also research to be done on how to better handle this relatively new material, but as the Ocean Coil pendant lamp collection proves, it’s definitely worth all the time and effort in making this journey.

A peaceful desk lamp concept evokes a feeling of Zen with its form and soft light

Lamps come in all shapes and sizes depending on where they’re used. Some are more decorative than others because they are meant more to enhance ambiance rather than provide illumination critical for getting work done. Of course, that doesn’t mean that these utilitarian lighting can’t look good as well, though they also have to be careful in making sure that usability isn’t impacted for the sake of aesthetics. At the same, you don’t need to go overboard either just to make a lamp look pleasing and distinctive. This somewhat minimalist desk lamp, for example, barely has any notable part aside from its lampshade, but it’s precisely because of its simplicity and form that it looks like you were raising a Zen garden on your desk.

Designer: Jang Lee Jun

For some people, desk lamps are an essential piece of equipment to shed light on their work, literally and figuratively, but they also need to avoid getting in the way of your productivity. That’s the primary reason why most desk lamps are simple, minimalist, and sometimes even bare-bones, providing light without distracting you with their appearance or eating up too much of your precious desk space. Fortunately, you just need a bit of creative thinking to make even a simple design more meaningful, like what this bonsai-inspired lamp tries to prove.

The bonsai tree is one of the more popular symbols related to Zen Buddhism, meditation, and calmness. The real tree takes a lot of patience to grow and trim, but simply seeing one is enough to give our minds peaceful thoughts. Not everyone can afford to take care of the real thing, though, so the Bonsai Desk Lamp offers something similar through its shape. The flat conical lampshade held up by thin metal rods is reminiscent of those bonsai trees, especially the Korean pine tree used for these decorative plants. It may not look like a real bonsai tree with multiple branches, but it could still call to mind those lush, green plants that our brains immediately associate with a state of Zen.

The lamp has one other unique feature that makes it more peaceful than most desk lamps. Instead of shining its light directly, it bounces it off the bottom of the lampshade. This creates a diffusing effect that generates a softer light without diminishing the lamp’s utility. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem possible to move the lamp head around to change its direction, limiting its movement to raising and lowering the arm.

If there’s one worrying thing about the bonsai desk lamp’s design is that it seems to be a bit unbalanced, with the lampshade carrying the visual weight of the object. It might not actually be lopsided, but even the impression of imbalance could make people worry that the lamp will topple over at the slightest nudge, nullifying the effect of whatever feelings of calm and peace the design is supposed to evoke.

This eerie table lamp looks like an eyeball but can easily adapt to your lighting needs

There is a staggering number of lamp designs available in the market today, each of them trying to address a particular use case or setting. Some try to cast their nets wide, but it’s sometimes difficult to have a “one size fits all” solution that doesn’t make too many compromises in return. Some people need a concentrated beam of light, while others prefer a more scattered glow. While it’s trivial to change a lamp’s intensity, changing its spread is a little trickier to pull off with traditional designs. This concept design tries to diverge from well-trodden paths to come up with a solution that could satisfy most, if not all, needs, and it ends up having a unique, eye-catching design that, oddly enough, also looks like an eyeball.

Designer: Julian Topor

Lamps serve different purposes depending on where they’re placed and how they emit their light. Ceiling and pendant lights serve to illuminate an entire space, while wall lamps aim to enhance the ambiance. Table lamps often give a more limited amount of light in their surroundings, while most desk lamps focus the light in a specific direction. Solus is a desk lamp design that tries to check off most of those boxes, at least without leaving your desk, and it uses planets revolving around the sun as inspiration.

In this case, what orbits around a ball of light isn’t a planet but four curved plates that can cover parts of a sphere that houses the bulb. These covers can move independently of each other, so you can cover parts of the sphere only while leaving other sections exposed, even if those parts aren’t adjacent to each other. You can expose at most three-fourths of the sphere, for example, or show only a quarter of the ball, making it look eerily like an eye.

1

With this rather unusual design, you can have precise control of how the light is distributed around the area. It can be spread far and wide by uncovering the majority of the upper half of the sphere, or it can be directed at a single location by covering everything but the direction you want. You can even illuminate different directions by leaving opposite sides open. Of course, the lamp’s brightness can also be controlled, this time with a ring slider on the base of the lamp.

Although the source of its inspiration isn’t immediately obvious, Solus’ unusual design, not to mention its color options, makes it a fun yet multi-functional lighting solution for almost any table or desk motif you have going. It might not take the role of a ceiling or wall lamp, but its flexible configuration definitely makes it worth more than a few single-purpose lamps. Plus, its odd and eerie design is a great eye-catching piece, pardon the pun, that’s sure to get friends and guests talking or even envying your latest acquisition.
