Stormtrooper Multi-Tool: The Empire Has a Sonic Screwdriver

If it isn’t already, soon, every single product will be available with some sort of Star Wars theme. Case in point: this Stormtrooper Multi-Tool. It’s a multi-tool, but it’s white and has a stormtrooper head on the side of it, apparently making it just Star Wars-themed enough to justify selling. What do they take me for, some sort of Star Wars fanatic? I’m going to buy two, one for everyday carry, one to leave at home in my junk drawer.

Available from Firebox, the $21 tool includes three different-sized flat-head screwdriver heads, three different Phillips heads, one mini glasses screwdriver, and a flashlight so you can see just what you’re screwing. So while I guess it technically is a multi-tool, that multi-tooling is pretty much limited to driving screws.

But are stormtroopers even handy with tools? Because if they’re as good at repairing things as they are at hitting the target, they’re shooting at, I want no part of it. You’re better off just stripping all the screws so you can’t do any more damage than calling Chewbacca to come and fix it for you.

Versatile and Feather light, Leatherman pocket multi-tool is the ideal all-in-one EDC for newbies!

Elegantly designed Leatherman multi-tool that shaves off the less required tools while adding some important ones – making it the ideal EDC for every pocket.

For any situation in life, you need to be ready with the right tool at the right time. The Leatherman Curl EDC inspired by the Wave Plus does exactly that with a touch of style. This multi-tool carries the essence of the Portland, Oregon-based origins established more than 37 years ago. Why I say that, well because it has the brand’s iconic features coming at an affordable price tag for first-time users. To be precise, the Curl EDC is a classic while being highly capable of tackling anything or everything coming its way.

Made out of 100 percent stainless steel material, the pocket tool is just the right palm-sized utility that’s so wantable. What piqued my interest about this multi-tool is the unification of 15 tools into a slim package weighing just 7.5-ounce. Leatherman has truly ticked all the right checkboxes here to appeal to a wide array of audiences. And be rest assured about its performance for a long time – after all it comes with a 25-year warranty. Virtually making it last a lifetime!

Leatherman Curl comes with a carefully chosen selection of tools like 420HC knife, bottle opener, can opener, diamond-coated file, hard-wire cutters, large bit driver, medium screwdriver, needlenose pliers, normal pliers, a ruler, spring-action scissors and wire stripper. To make it ultra-easy to carry around Curl also gets a removable pocket clip and nylon belt sheath.

Compared to the Wave, the Curl here gives up on the saw and serrated blade for outside accessible tools. It swaps the micro driver with an awl for the inside accessible tools. It also does away with the replaceable wire cutters and locking mechanism which I think is not much of a loss unless you cutting wires or fences every other day!

This tiny foldable pocket knife is an EDC designed to fit in the little front pocket of your jeans!

A compact EDC at the right place and the right time can solve your needs. This is specifically true when you are outdoors and need to open a can or cut through the thick bushes in the woods. The scenarios can be endless, but the utility remains the same – a compact pocket knife that can double as your makeshift knife, bottle opener, tab opener, and more, depending on your ability to put it to good use. The best part of all? It fits into that tiny front pocket of your jeans and stays tucked there anytime you need to use it!

Here enters the Zootility ST-2 foldable pocket knife into the spotlight, reinforced with a unibody design thanks to the screw-less form factor. The multi-tool is a mere 0.080 inches thick, measures 3.51-inches in the closed configuration, and the open mode extends to 5.8-inches. ST-2 is crafted out of 440C stainless steel material, so you can bank on its strength for cutting even the hardest of materials with utter ease. One exciting feature of this EDC that will be important for frequent travelers is the patented FlyOff technology that allows you to remove the blade from the body quickly and forfeit it when you forget to take it out of your pocket at the airport. You’ll be able to get the replacement blade with ease, saving you from all the trouble.

The knife function is the primary one on the everyday carry tool, while the secondary functions like bottle/can opener and twist tab opener come in handy. Other than tucking it inside your coin pocket, we can hook it onto any buckles or backpack for adventure escapades. Truly, ST-2 is a thin tool destined for your EDC essentials!

The adjustable wrench gets a glorious redesign after nearly 130 years

In our pursuit to relentlessly fix stuff around the world and make them better, we designers often forget to look at the very tools we use to create, repair, and redesign our lives. The adjustable spanner/wrench, a pretty standard part of every toolkit, was designed by a certain Swedish man called Johan Petter Johansson. The patent for his design (which looks exactly like the adjustable wrench we see today) dates back to 1892, and hasn’t seen much change in years. In fact, just 30 years later, it was redesigned by Edwin J. Evans, but the new format never caught on.

The MetMo Grip builds on Edwin J. Evans’ redesign, which now exists in the public domain. There’s something extremely simple and sophisticated about the MetMo Grip’s schematic. The wrench’s jaw is operated using a single metal piece that slides up and down a threaded column with varying pitches. Long-story-short, move the metal piece up and down and the jaws of the wrench open and close. The entire tool comes fabricated from stainless steel, with incredibly low tolerances that result in a smooth movement of parts. The wrench’s innovative mechanism makes it much easier to open and close as compared to the conventional adjustable wrench you’ve got in your toolkit, while ensuring that once opened, the jaws of the wrench are incredibly secure, allowing you to tighten or loosen screws with ease.

That, however, isn’t all that the MetMo Grip has to offer. Its robust design even integrates a box-cutter and bottle-opener into it. Its small, effective design makes it the perfect upgrade for every toolkit, allowing it to be used in workshops, repair centers, garages, and if you plan on carrying the MetMo Grip outdoors, an integrated belt hook loop allows you to secure this innovative EDC tool around your waist.

What’s really remarkable about the MetMo Grip’s design is the fact that its schematic existed over 90 years ago, but never really reached its full potential. With over a 1000 backers since the project’s launch, the MetMo Grip hopes to fix that discrepancy, and give the world a wrench that’s efficient, delightful to use, and is so buttery smooth, it could even serve as a fidget-toy!

MetMo Grip – A Piece of History Re-engineered

The MetMo Grip is both a fidget toy and multi-tool, keeping you satisfied for hours on end either fiddling with it or using it to clamp the life out of something.

Why MetMo Grip?

The team found a patent of an early 20th Century variable grip wrench and immediately fell in love with the concept. MetMo Grip is a tribute to the furious innovation at the start of the last century that lead to an overhaul in the means of production and design of everyday tools.

Made using modern methods from contemporary materials, MetMo Grip is an engineering oddity and marvel that’s as comfortable as a fidget toy as it is clamping together steel.

Who’s it For?

Made for designers, engineers, thinkers, and anyone who wants to just take a moment to focus, relieve stress or just play around.

A Fidget Toy That’s Also a Handy Tool

From a standard 1/4 inch bit holder to a handy box opener, the MetMo Grip is ready to tackle your daily tasks with ease.

Simply sliding the jaws open and closed is satisfying. The weight feels reassuring in the hand and you know that if you do ever need to get a grip on something, MetMo is there for the job.

No more fiddling with your adjustable wrenches, spinning the gear over and over til (maybe) you fix it in the right place. The MetMo Grip design is snap-able in a second and securely locks in place so you get it right first time, every time.

What is MetMo Grip Made Of?

MetMo Grip is machined from solid stainless steel, with a hard anodized 6061 aluminum adjuster. Stainless steel components form the body of MetMo Grip with a precision formed solid rod and CNC machined jaws. The helix shaft is machined from 1020 carbon steel that’s ready to take on the rigors of any tough job.

6061 hard anodized aluminum is the chosen metal for the adjuster. Lightweight and durable, aluminum adds function without adding extra weight.

Precision manufactured using five axis CNC machinery puts the grip a cut above the rest. With the precise tolerances achievable with modern manufacturing, their re-imagining of this grip is more fluid and satisfying than the original, as well as being stronger and more reliable.

Why This Design?

Design Team: We found the original tool and immediately fell in love with just how satisfying it was to use and fiddle with. We found ourselves constantly playing with the mechanism whilst at our desks. It was so fascinating watching the motion and feeling the weight of such a well constructed tool, it left us feeling that this was something we just had to share with the world!

So we set out to recreate this ancient design with the focus on making it useful as well as enjoyable, to have and to hold even when it’s not being used as a tool.

We wanted it to stand out against modern tools by keeping its vintage design roots, resembling the trusty engineers precision calipers.

We also wanted to honor the legacy and impact of the Wrench Wars. Without this period of rapid innovation, we’d likely have much fewer options in terms of the tools we have today. Necessity begets invention, as they say, and though now a half-forgotten relic, the Grip style can make a comeback in the 21st Century.

This EDC multi-tool is a portable and lightweight alternative to a hefty toolbox!

Have you ever noticed you never really seem to find a tool when you need one, and when you have no use for them they seem to be sprawling all over your house? Or the fact that your toolbox is never where you seem to have last placed it, and half the tools in it are always left untouched. Well, product designer Saurabh Yadhav created the most kickass EDC that you may have ever seen, ‘Voxel’! What is Voxel? Voxel is the portable and lightweight alternative to a hefty toolbox, making it beyond a regular EDC multi-tool.

No more scrounging about for your toolbox, only to find an array of tools that you honestly barely have any utility for. Maneuvering through the complicated amount of tools tires you out, before you actually even begin to use them. However, Voxel is a single wholesome tool equipped with a wide range of crucial functions, finding great utility in our day to day tasks.

Voxel functions as a screwdriver, wrench, sharp edge, scraper, and a pry bar. The metallic little product looks like a razor, to be honest. However, I doubt you’ll hurt yourself with it. The flat end of Voxel functions as a scraper, flat head screwdriver and a not so sharp edge for some of the less tedious tasks. The main body serves as different types of wrenches including a hex and spoke wrench, with perfect spots for your thumb grip, ensuring a steady hand. The opposing curved end can be used as a bottle opener! No more scurrying about for bottle openers that you know you don’t own. The curved end also functions as a nail puller, file, and a 1/4 inch wrench.

Created from a single piece of stainless steel, Voxel is the kind of multi-tool you can carry around in your pocket, and pull out in a moment’s notice! I don’t know about you, but an accessible bottle opener in my purse seems like a godsend to me.

A ‘smashing’ multi-tool!

multi_tool_hammer_1

Ten tools come together to occupy the space one tool would take. Kikkerland’s Hammer Multi-tool turns your regular claw-hammer and put an additional nine tools into it, making it even more useful than you’d initially hoped. Fitted right inside the hammer’s wooden handle are a flat head screwdriver, bottle opener, reamer, saw blade, file, knife blade, phillips head screwdriver and a handle that on pulling open, turns the hammer into a plier/wire-cutter!

With its light-colored wooden handle, the hammer looks and feels great to hold. Unlike most hammers, the Kikkerland Hammer Multi-Tool uses the mass of the handle to store as many different, versatile tools as possible… and the part where it transforms into a plier/wire-cutter? Sheer genius!

Off Grid Survival Axe Review: A Practical Tool and Zombie Fighter

If you’re looking for a single tool to keep in your bugout bag, the Off Grid Survival Axe is an excellent choice. It combines a number of useful tools for both the real world and whatever post-apocalyptic world you can image, be it zombies, robots, or even killer cars.

Also known as the “Lil Trucker,” this rugged multi-tool packs 13 types of tool in one. It’s made from a single piece of hardened 1055 carbon tool steel that runs the length of the blade all the way down the tang, which is sandwiched between a pair of glass-filled nylon handles. The finger cutouts in the handle provides an excellent grip – something you want on any sort of hand tool.

First and foremost, this thing is a compact hatchet, and does a great job hacking through logs, for gathering quick and easy firewood. It didn’t take long for me to split a 4″ thick piece of wood, and it certainly could handle thicker logs with additional time and effort. It’s not razor-sharp, but it does the trick. The axe blade is also designed to be resharpened if it ever gets dull, or if you desire a sharper blade.

The head also contains a variety of box wrenches. There are 3/8″(10mm), 7/16″(11mm), 1/2″(13mm), and 9/16″(15mm) hex wrenches. The wrenches offer excellent grip, but with one caveat. Their location on the axe head does limit their utility to locations which are pretty wide open, and they won’t work well turning nuts or bolts in cramped quarters. A 1/4″ hex socket is designed to hold screwdriver bits, but I couldn’t get it to securely hold any of the ones in my toolbox – they just kind of wobbled around. They’d do well to place it in a thicker section of steel, and magnetize it next time around.

On the backside of the head are a couple of other useful tools, including a nail puller, a flat pry bar, a box-cutting edge which doubles as a can opener, a wrench for tightening hose couplings, and a claw hammer. The hammer works quite well, and has plenty of heft for quickly driving nails. Prying stubborn nails is a breeze too. That said, the hammer end started showing scratches quite quickly, which is the one downside I can see to having a black finish. It looks awesome, but isn’t always the most practical for tools. One tool I couldn’t figure out how to effectively use was the can opener. It seems like it could smash holes in the top of a can in a pinch, but it’s not a precise tool like a standalone can opener.

The handle packs several handy emergency tools, including an emergency glass-breaker and a seatbelt cutter. While I didn’t have any glass windows I wanted to break, I did test out the belt cutter on a spare length of seatbelt webbing from a backpack I have, and it sliced right through it.

There’s also a locking, flip-out sawblade in the handle, which is great for cutting branches or wood boards. The 6″ Milwaukee sawzall blade also works great on plastic, metal, and other materials, and is replaceable with a store-bought blade, should you ever wear it out.

Of course, you can’t have a multi-tool without a bottle opener. After all, you need to pop open a cold drink to celebrate all that hard work you did getting to your campsite and setting up your tent, right? This bottle opener is located in the back edge of the axe head, and works perfectly. It also doubles as a gas shut-off wrench, though again, I had no gas lines I needed to shut off, so I didn’t test this.

While you’re unlikely to encounter the undead, the Off Grid Survival Axe would surely help dispense of a zombie or three, should you find yourself in such a dangerous predicament. But even if the zombiepocalypse never arrives, you can rest easy that you’ll get lots of use out of this versatile hand tool. It’s available now over on Amazon for about $80(USD).
