Luxury vehicles have a new dark horse. Designed by LA-based automotive designer Julien Fesquet, the Rolls-Royce Apparition concept comes with a beautiful almost precious pebble-like exterior that takes the Sweptail and exaggerates everything we loved about it.
The Apparition is a long, lithe, elegant automotive artpiece with a visibly large wheel-to-body ratio. Its unusual proportions give it the appearance of a majestic panther, limbs outstretched, waiting to pounce on its prey, thanks to the incredibly lengthy hood/bonnet. The exaggerated hood angles ever so slightly at the end, resulting in a steeply raked windshield which covers the entire car in a bubble of tinted glass from front to back. The glass element finds itself on the front, cladding the area where one would normally expect Rolls-Royce’s long grilles – hinting at an electric drivetrain. The Spirit of Ecstasy emerges through the glass in glorious fashion, while chrome strips on either side separate the massive glass panel from the sides of the car.
The electric drivetrain, however, isn’t the only progressive element in the Rolls-Royce car’s design. The automobile even features digital rear-view mirrors along with equally razor-thin headlamps and taillights… and two spare tires, partially hidden by the front fenders in a gloriously modern reinterpretation of a common practice in Rolls-Royce’s earlier models! Fesquet created the Apparition as a personal project realized over a period of two weeks while at home during the lockdown. The Apparition “was the opportunity to improve my 3D and renders skills,” said Fesquet.
A couple of years back, I came across some unique ceiling fans designed to look like the fan blades from a jet engine. Now, the artist behind these awe-inspiring fans is back, and he’s showing off his biggest build yet. Commissioned by jet engine maker Rolls-Royce, this gigantic fan measure an amazing 113 inches in diameter.
Kurt Eldrup of Phighter Images and Aviation Flying Furniture fabricated the fan’s blades to replicate the look of Rolls’ lightweight carbon composite and titanium CTi fan blades, and will ultimately be painted to match the look of the real jet engine (as shown below).
In order to ensure that the fan spins smoothly and in balance, each blade was precision-cut using a CNC waterjet machine. Each of the fan’s 18 blades measures a whopping 45″ long, and there’s a 23″ diameter conical spinner at its center. You can check out a little footage of the fan spinning at a low speed in the video below. Rolls wants it to spin at a fairly slow speed so people can admire its design, but its builder assures us that the motor could be cranked up to about 10 times the speed shown here.
Kurt went so far as to build a custom wall switch for the fan, using aviation-inspired designs and incorporating the iconic Rolls-Royce logo.
The fan is headed to the Rolls-Royce North America headquarters in Reston, Virginia, where it will be permanently installed as the centerpiece of the office.

“Over the top” is a phrase that comes to mind when one looks at the TMC Dumont for the very first time. There’s nothing conventional about the bike. It features two massive 36-inch wide hubless wheels on either end of its edgy, characteristic body that features… wait for it… a helicopter engine. Sitting rather visible on the Dumont’s body is a 300-horsepower Rolls-Royce helicopter engine that literally puts the ‘chopper’ in this chopper!
With looks that could proverbially kill, and an engine that could literally kill, the TMC Dumont is a passion project of retired F1 driver, Tarso Marquez. There’s no way this 300hp bike would ever be street legal (that much horsepower could just as well kill the rider), but I’ll admit that with its Tron aesthetic and absolutely, ridiculously over-the-top build, the Dumont is certainly worth appreciating (even from afar, because there’s no way you can escape the sound of a helicopter engine)! Bespoke Design
The Bespoke Design Intern creates and steers desirable and profitable design features as part of existing and new model developments in line with Bespoke project and brand requirements. Working from within the Rolls-Royce Design team the design work is coordinated and managed by the Bespoke Project Team who steer the bespoke business. Design work can be modifications to existing features or from a blank sheet of paper and can derive from customer requests or be pro-actively offered as individual features or part of a Collection Car. Compelling theme development creates a strong framework of desirability for customer and collection cars and there is a need for both 2D graphical and 3D product design skills. Whilst there are specific Colour and Trim Designers within the team an appreciation of color and materials is expected.
Very strong creativity and presentation skills are required using both traditional sketching skills as well as digital techniques (Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator). Self-management skills are needed to work towards practical solutions with demanding deadlines and also to coordinate inputs from others and steer them effectively where necessary. An awareness of differing international cultures is helpful.
Good interpersonal skills (both verbal and written) are required in order to pursue design solutions and ‘sell’ ideas both internally and externally. The Design Intern needs the ability to juggle different demands, sometimes conflicting, whilst delivering attractive and customer focussed design solutions in a timely fashion. There is a need to appreciate technical and packaging issues and concepts must have a high level of practicality as designs move from concept to reality in a short and at times demanding timeframe.
The Intern role will join the team to work on developing design themes for customer cars and new Bespoke features using a combination of sketched images and retouched images from the Rolls-Royce Configurator. There will be further opportunities to be involved in concept feature development and a personally driven project.

REQUIREMENTS
Working towards a B.A or M.A. in Industrial Design or Automotive Design or equivalent with proven skills by way of portfolio and CV – please attach a portfolio of recent work to your application (PDF recommended max size 10Mb). Some previous relevant work experience is helpful in a related field. Technical understanding and acumen to work on practical solutions within short time frames and manage time effectively. Some understanding of different manufacturing methods is helpful and an appreciation of regional markets. The Intern should be able to display knowledge of luxury trends (both current and emerging innovations).

An innovation you’d completely expect from a Hollywood spy flick, Rolls-Royce has designed tiny robots called SWARM that get deployed within their jet engines to run reconnaissance and inspections.
A part of RR’s IntelligentEngine program, the SWARM get deployed into intricate parts of the engine, giving engineers real-time feedback on performance, wear-tear, etc. The visual data collected by these tiny robots would be used “alongside the millions of data points already generated by today’s engines as part of their Engine Health Monitoring systems.” They’ll work alongside snake-shaped INSPECT robots, providing inspection services, while remote boreblending robots will take on maintenance activities. Pretty nifty as long as they’re just used for producing world-class jet engines and not for world dominance!

It seems like a sort of misnomer to have a Rolls-Royce that doesn’t… um, roll. But it’s a known fact that the luxury automotive company does also have a separate division that makes world-class engines and propulsion systems for aerospace purposes. Now, Rolls-Royce plans on joining the flying-car race by building its first EVTOL (Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) vehicle. Showcased at the Farnborough International Air Show this year, Rolls Royce’s EVTOL concept currently uses their M250 internal combustion engine, and the company is looking to turn it into a hybrid system.
The EVTOL concept can carry as many as 5 passengers at speeds of up to 250 miles per hour. The vehicle has a helicopter/aeroplane hybrid design, with a cockpit and a large overhead wing with propellers that rotates to face forwards and upwards, allowing the EVTOL to take off vertically like a helicopter, but then propel forwards like an airplane.
Designed to integrate with existing heliports and airports, Rolls-Royce sees the EVTOL market as an emerging one, as companies like Uber and Aston Marton spearhead the flying-car movement to combat traffic congestion and overpopulation. If the technology works and is feasible, and if things go well, Rolls-Royce says their EVTOL concept may just become a reality within the next two years, being used not only for public and private transport, but for military applications too!
