Airy work space lets you customize and create a mobile workspace

Even though I’m back to my boring old cubicle in my not so boring office, I’m still always on the lookout for interesting desks or work areas. It’s still always nice to dream about what my ideal workspace would look like if it was up to me or if we ever get back to a work from home situation for one reason or another. So a desk that is able to adapt to what I need instead of just a piece of furniture where I place my laptop on would be ideal in that scenario.

Designer: Ivana Wingham

The Airy Office Desk is mobile and is able to adapt to your environment and needs and also seems to be pretty easy to assemble and disassemble. It has a flat top that curves on one side and also has some shelves underneath should you need storage for your papers, notebooks, and other office supplies that you don’t want to place on top. It actually looks like a cross between a bespoke piece of furniture since the design is a bit unusual and also a modular desk.

The mobile and modular characteristic of the desk comes from the fact that the shelving underneath is something you can remove if you don’t need to have storage under your desk. The desk is big enough to place your work station and put some books, documents, and various office supplies if you prefer to have them easily visible to you. It is also “open” underneath to give you the feeling of space and airiness, hence the name. The combination of wooden and metal industrial materials seems to work, giving it a minimalist and sleek look.

Based on some of the images, you could curve one side of the desk towards you, creating a more enclosed space, in case that’s what you need instead of a wide desk. I personally would like that set up more as a wide, long desk seems to be too big for me but making it into an L-shaped table gives you a seemingly smaller space although it really is the same amount of desk if you think about it.

This minimal 3D-printed side table features unique interlocking storage sections

A beautifully designed piece of furniture has the power to lend an air of elegance and calm to an otherwise mundane or messy space. It doesn’t have to be large, nor does it have to be woven with bells and tassels, its simplistic minimal demeanor is enough to add an interesting spark to a basic living room. And the Drop Side Table just happens to be one such kind of furniture design. Side tables are usually ignored, and paid a meager amount of attention to while buying. However, the Drop Side Table was definitely paid a considerable amount of attention to while designing, hence resulting in a simple yet power-packed piece of furniture.

Designer: Deniz Aktay for recozy

Designed by Deniz Aktay, the Drop Side Table is a clean, minimal, and chiq piece. The side table was built by twisting a standard glass tube, until the tube was completely interlocked in itself. This twisting and interlocking resulted in the creation of two parts that are divided by a tightly knitted separation. Twisting the tube created a simple and efficient product that did not require any additional material. Aktay says that the Drop table was 3D-printed in vase mode, which basically means printing time and the usage of material are optimized and minimized. Recycled PTA and recycled wood fibres were utilized for the 3D-printing process.

The side table features a unique and asymmetrical twisting point which allows it to be utilized from every side, even if it is turned upside down! Pretty interesting, no? The twisting storage sections of the side table can be used to store a variety of items from books and magazines to tealights or smaller flowers. Whereas the upper base can be used as a tabletop, as can the lower base if the table is turned upside down.

The different contouring and interlocking sections of the Drop table provide the furniture piece with a geometrically unique and innovative aesthetic and a rather refreshing identity. The table occupies a minimum amount of space and can be placed cozily into any nook or cranny of your home. Overall, the Drop table is a thoughtfully designed, functional, and good-looking furniture design.

This sturdy + minimal coffee table with chonky legs was built using 100-year-old wood

I believe that the secret to a great living room is an excellent coffee table. Coffee tables function as the centerpiece of a living room, hence you need to pick one that truly livens it up, and sets the tone for it. And, once the perfect coffee table has been set, you can start building the rest of the space around it – a comfy sofa, cute side tables, exquisite lighting, and elegant decorative pieces. They are all brought together by the right coffee table! And even coffee tables are getting more innovative, unique, and well-crafted by the day! And fine example of this is the Centenniale Coffee Table.

Designer: Joanna Laajisto for Nikari

Designed by architect and designer Joanna Laajisto for the Finnish brand Nikari, the Centenniale coffee table is a sturdy and minimal coffee table built using 100-year-old wood. The coffee table was designed by embracing the cracks and imperfections of the old timber. The entire coffee table was constructed from a single piece of wood, and it features a sharp-edged and elongated tabletop that is supported by blocky and chonky legs with rounded edges. The different elements of the table beautifully showcase the unique and versatile variations and textures in the timber.

“Over 100-year-old wood is allowed to show its true character, color variations, cracks, and marks,” said Laajisto about the Centenniale table, which debuted at Milan design week 2023. “Some people might call these imperfections, but I think they are the essence of the piece and should be embraced.” The table features a rather low-profile which adds magnitudes to its overall character and personality. Laajisto says that the table attempts to bring a sense of harmony and calmness into any space it is placed within, as does its contrasting forms.

The visually simple and yet endearing Centenniale coffee table is made of solid ash or oak woods and is available in a range of sizes. You can pick a size that works perfectly for your home, and create a minimal and serene living space that speaks volumes without any excessive frills and tassels. The Centenniale coffee table’s simple minimalism and beauty, and amusing geometrical elements work together in perfect harmony to create the ultimate coffee table.

This Minimal Metallic Coffee Table Takes Inspiration From the Simple Shape of a Safety Pin

A well-designed coffee table is the ultimate pick me up your living room needs. Once you pick the perfect coffee table, setting up your living room becomes child’s play, because you’ve already set the tone and decided on the theme with the table, now you simply need to build on it, and create a space that truly reflects you and your interior design style. I’m no stranger to beautifully designed coffee tables, I come across a gazillion different ones every week on the internet. And I do have an exceptionally soft corner for them. However, if you add Deniz Aktay’s magical touch to my favorite piece of furniture – well, then you have the perfect coffee table.

Designer: Deniz Aktay

I’ve covered a ton of Deniz Aktay designs simply because they are oh-so-simple, elegant, and yet packed with massive functionality. The simplicity will almost make you wonder ‘Why didn’t I think of this?’, but unfortunately for us and luckily for Aktay, no one else can conjure these designs up except him. And his latest design the ‘Whisk’ coffee table is no exception to this. Aktay recently posted the Whisk coffee table to his Instagram page, around two days ago. Simple, and minimal, yet oozing a geometric exuberance, the Whisk coffee table features an artfully shaped metal tube that forms the major body of the design and transforms it into a major eye-catcher.

The simple twisted metallic form of the coffee table brings to mind the image of a whisk, which could be why Aktay named the furniture piece the same. Or if you look closer it also looks like a contorted safety pin! The interloping metallic tube supports a tabletop that rounds at one end and forms a rectangular on the other end. The tabletop fits niftily and strategically into the tube, creating elements that perfectly complement one another, and yet provide an interesting geometrical contrast as well.

Although the Whisk coffee table is a compact and small design with a minor footprint, it speaks volumes through its sharp, form, and metallic excellence. It’s the kind of coffee table that you could fit effortlessly into any part of your home, and I do believe it could work well as a side table too, owing to its minimum form.

How this beautiful wooden side table seems to hover in the air

Furniture has long ceased being simply functional products that take up space in homes or offices. Given their very visible roles, they have also become decorative pieces that add to a space’s ambiance. This is especially true for chairs, sofas, and large tables like coffee tables, but even smaller items like side tables can have an impact on the overall appeal of the room. Some of these side tables use elaborate designs, unusual forms, or even showy colors, but those are not the only ways to grab people’s attention. There are times when simplicity works better, and this particular design uses extremely simple shapes and constructions to the point that the side table looks almost magical as if its top was simply hovering above the ground.

Designer: Jonas Herman Pedersen

Tables need to be steady and stable to be able to hold things, and that’s normally accomplished by having four or at least two even legs raising the tabletop up. Even for a table with a single “pillar,” that support is often located in the middle at the table’s center of gravity to help keep it from toppling on one side. The Stilk Side Table, however, throws convention out of the window, resulting in a design that seemingly challenges common sense when constructing tables.

Completely made out of wood, Stilk’s top rests on a thin monolith that stands not at the center but off to one side. Of course, balance is achieved through the counterweight, which is a pile of four thick wooden discs joined to the base of the monolith, also on a single side only.

The top itself isn’t a flat circle but has the edge attached to the stem folded up a bit. This makes the tabletop look like it’s hovering with nothing supporting it while also acting as a sort of locking mechanism when something heavy is placed on the table. Despite its simple design, Stilk actually has a secret function where the owner can adjust the table’s height by simply removing a small wooden rod and positioning the top on one of three available heights.

Stilk is an unconventional side table design that admittedly would make some people nervous about placing fragile objects on it. In a sense, its appearance creates an illusion of lightness and instability that definitely catches people’s attention without actually going beyond simple shapes and finishes. It’s an effective example of how challenging the status quo can lead to interesting and effective designs while still keeping things simple, minimalist, and beautiful.

Unique table designed with loads of storage space that furniture lovers will be absolutely smitten with

If you’ve ever even remotely spent time in the furniture design world on Instagram, then you’ve for sure come across Deniz Aktay. His simple, minimal, yet genius furniture pieces have slowly but surely taken the IG world by storm. The success of his designs lies in the fact that they’re oh-so-simple, elegant, and yet packed with massive functionality. The simplicity will almost make you wonder ‘Why didn’t I think of this?’, but unfortunately for us and luckily for Aktay, no one else can conjure these designs up except him. He’s created wonders – from a unique bookshelf that functions as a side table to a coffee table design with intriguing layers. And his ‘Overlap’ table is a creation I’m currently completely smitten by!

Designer: Deniz Aktay

A table is a pretty important addition to any living space – whether it’s a side, coffee, or console table! Once the perfect table has been set, you can start building the rest of the space around it – a comfy sofa, cute chairs, exquisite lighting, and elegant decorative pieces. Now what I absolutely love about the Overlap table is that it seems like a pretty versatile one! It looks commanding and functional enough to work as a coffee table, and also compact and cute enough to be used as a side table. And I truly appreciate how the simple design prioritizes storage – something that modern homeowners will appreciate as well, considering the space constraint issues we all face nowadays.

Deniz describes the Overlap table as a ‘table-storage design’, which quite simply explains what the piece of furniture is. Overlap basically comprises of two rotated wooden boxes that have been artfully joined and intertwined together to create a sturdy table that can also be used as a storage space. The design has a geometrically intriguing form with the wooden box at the back swinging and extended out to form the tabletop. While the other wooden box solely functions as a nifty storage unit and provides support to the tabletop placed on it.

Both the wooden boxes come together to create one homogenous unit that has been constructed craftily to form a nuanced design that provides an ample amount of storage while occupying a minimum amount of space itself. The well-designed table/storage design can be fit into the tiny corners of your home, or placed as a centerpiece in your living room.

Bold yellow outdoor table is the stereotypical picnic table reimagined in a fresh + contemporary form

Being stuck at home during the pandemic really did teach us a few lessons. One, being, that you can actually do a lot at home, especially in your backyard! It definitely made us realize we shouldn’t underestimate our backyards, they can be locations of major fun, recreation, and relaxation…depending on how we do them up. You can turn your backyard into an ideal date spot for you and your partner, or host a barbecue party. And a super cool addition to your backyard would be the Mass Table!

Designer: Alexander Lotersztain for Derlot

Designed by Australian designer Alexander Lotersztain for Derlot, the Mass Table is what you would get if you reimagined and recreated the stereotypical and, to be honest pretty boring picnic table. Alexander took the typical picnic table and transformed it into a unique flat-packed table in an almost fluorescent yellow color. Made from a sturdy combination of powder-coated steel and aluminum, the Mass table is ideal for both indoors and outdoors.

The designer drew inspiration from the iconic garden table and used it as a visual reference to design the Mass table. The table was designed to be minimal, sturdy, and contemporary. The aesthetics were left pretty simple, without integrating any bells and tassels, and equal focus was maintained on the durability and practicality of the table. Made to be accessible, the Mass table can seat up to eight people at a time, including wheelchair users. It’s a pretty inclusive design.

“Refined, durable, and inclusive, Mass has an elegant visual appeal and holds true to the emotional values of the original table-and-chair hybrid that we call a picnic table. The design suggests a variety of applications, from parks and gardens to new forms of collaborative work environments, bringing a relaxed feel to interiors within the commercial and built environment sector,” said Derlot.

The Mass table comes in a flat-packed form and can be easily and swiftly assembled within an hour. The table is also fully recyclable once its life cycle comes to an end. If you wish to use the table indoors, although, in my personal opinion, it’s better suited for the outdoors, you can fit the table with power sockets, and USB charging options, which enables the users to stay “charged and connected wherever they are” irrespective of where they are.

Eccentric side table puts a mythical beast in your living space

Furniture may have started out as purely functional objects, but they quickly transformed into decorative pieces that add some flavor to a given space. Sometimes that flavor is ornate and grandiose. Other times it can be unadorned yet elegant. Eye-catching features don’t always have to come from embellishments and accents. Sometimes, just the shape of the furniture can already be a conversation starter, especially if they come in weird forms or distinct appearances. This side table, for example, is reminiscent of an elusive mythical monster rising from the depths of a lake, but despite its odd shape, it actually has a few useful functions beyond just holding your coffee mug.

Designer: Deniz Aktay

The Loch Ness monster, sometimes affectionately called “Nessie,” is one of the most famous mysteries that have filled books and cameras over the decades, right next to Bigfoot and UFO sightings. It is commonly speculated to be an amphibious creature that raises its long neck above the water from time to time, leading to its now iconic silhouette.

Nessie is a side table whose name and shape leave no doubt as to its inspiration. What is also clear is that it’s a fine example of woodwork craftsmanship, considering the difficulty in producing its unconventional form. It is practically made of two planks of wood that curve upward to join a square tabletop at two of the latter’s adjacent edges. Since such a composition would normally topple over, a wooden triangular prism serves as the counterweight on the opposite end.

Despite its rather unusual shape, reminiscent of an animal sticking its neck up, each part of the side table’s design serves a particular purpose. The long triangular block, for example, acts as a bookmark for more than just one reading material. The empty space beneath the table top can also serve as a hiding spot for other items like small storage boxes.

As far as side tables go, Nessie definitely takes up more space and requires some planning on where to put it. That said, it isn’t wasted space either since every part serves a function. It might even be possible to extend the design to create some storage space inside the triangular end, with a door that easily lifts to reveal its contents.

Stone-like tables made from recycled construction wood are inspired by Korean architecture

Wood is a material loved by many designers and creators because of its natural beauty, its distinct texture, and its sustainability. The latter, however, doesn’t mean that there is no waste or damage to the planet involved, especially when the rate of use outpaces the rate of growth of trees. Wood is biodegradable, but it isn’t easily recyclable either. This is especially true for wood used during construction which often becomes useless after it has served its purpose. These tables, however, give new life to these discarded wooden beams, and they ironically take their inspiration and even their appearance from buildings made of stone and concrete.

Designer: Jongwon Lee

There are many ways to use wood in construction, but one of the most basic and most unappreciated types is PSL or Parallel Strand Lumber. These thick wooden beams are used as frames in architecture or interiors for walls. Their rough texture and raw appearance make them less ideal for any other purpose, and they’re often simply discarded when they’ve reached their end of life.

Primitive Structures is a table design that uses those exact same flaws and turns them into strengths and unique features. Every part of the table is made from used construction wood cut into uneven polygonal shapes. Discarded PSL wood often comes with holes made during construction, so these are filled with recycled wood chips to provide not only visual completeness but also structural safety.

The raw shapes of the legs and tops give the table a rather primitive character. Rather than hide the distinctive texture of PSL wood, they are made to stand out instead, making them resemble leaf veins or tiger stripes. This gives the table an almost stone-like appearance, and the arrangement of a slab sitting on top of tall stones is also reminiscent of ancient Korean dolmen or megalithic tombs. When the three-legged tables are stacked on top of each other, they even give the image of a Korean pagoda on a smaller scale.

Primitive Structures is an interesting design experiment on how an often ignored material can be re-recycled and down-cycled to produce something that almost looks like a piece of sculptural art. The tables’ primitive and stone-like forms exude a sense of power and strength, inspiring confidence in their use while also providing some peace of mind in knowing that this beautiful piece of furniture was made from the ground up to help heal the planet.

Gorgeous gem-like coffee tables might make you feel like grabbing a soda

It might not have been the original intention, but coffee tables have pretty much become more decorative than functional these days. Of course, they still serve as tables you put things on, including your coffee, but they are mostly designed to have more visual impact these days. It’s not unusual for this kind of table to have some eye-catching shape or color or both, acting as a center of attraction as well as a conversation starter. These glass-blown coffee tables are perfect examples of such furniture, capturing your visitors’ eyes, imaginations, and probably even appetites with their elegant forms, gem-like colors, and dynamic surfaces that may entice you to pour yourself a bubbly drink.

Designer: Yiannis Ghikas

A glass table might not be the most practical piece of furniture because of its fragility, especially if the entire table, including the legs, is made up of that material. Things get even more complicated if you’re attempting to make a sizable table out of a single piece of glass that is air-blown like traditional glass pieces. It’s that technical difficulty that makes the Soda coffee tables all the more impressive and mind-blowing, pretty much like a glass-blown art piece.

The production of such a masterpiece is no easy feat. It’s made upside-down, blown from a single glass volume, and shaped by no less than three master glassmakers. Complicating things further is that while the tabletop is a conventional circle, the stem is formed into three intersecting circles that resemble the petals of a flower. That unusual shape not only provides a beautiful form but also helps spread the weight around.

Unlike what you might expect from a glass table, the Soda coffee table isn’t completely smooth, at least not visually. The top has a hammered surface that seems to freeze ripples in time. It creates an impression of dynamism and almost literal vibrancy, almost like a colored drink that bubbles and ripples at the slightest movement. It reflects and refracts light in seemingly random and interesting ways as if the table is a gigantic drinking glass with soda trapped inside for eternity.

Soda is more than just an elegant coffee table. It’s also an exercise in pushing the envelope of a glass-blown design, especially when it comes to large proportions and complicated shapes. The result is a beautiful piece of furniture that’s no different from a piece of sculptural art that combines a play of light and colors that will surely make you the talk of the neighborhood.
