Black Hat Oculus: A Creative, Co-op VR Infilitration Game

One of the coolest features of the Nintendo Wii U was the fact that the Gamepad allows for game designers to give information to one player without giving it to the others. The Oculus Rift can do this, but to a much greater extreme. A player can have an entirely private experience; that’s useful in competitive games, and very, very interesting in co-op games.

Take Black Hat Oculus, which is currently on Kickstarter, for example. It’s a game meant to be played by two people on one computer. The person wearing the rift, Hammer, has to navigate and infiltrate a level that looks like a cyberpunk version of Minecraft (not my jam, but there are plenty of people who will love it). The catch is that he can’t do it alone; he needs a friendly hacker, Spice, to help disable traps and security measure and keep an eye out for enemies.

It all has a very Matrix-esque vibe to it, and we can’t help but long for a world in which this concept would be applied to that particular piece of IP. C’est la vie, non?

Pledge at least $10(USD) over on Kickstarter to grab a digital download of the game once it’s released.

LEGO Matrix Armored Personnel Unit: There is No Armor

Zion’s Armored Personnel Units (APUs) and the bloody battle they waged were two of the most memorable parts of The Matrix Revolutions. The APUs look primitive, unoptimized and anthropomorphized, exactly the opposite of the Sentinels controlled by the Machines. Niki Dregant captured the APU’s design perfectly with his LEGO scale model.

Niki says the APU is made of about 700 pieces, and that the movement range of its legs and arms are similar to that of its movie counterpart.

Head to Niki’s Flickr page for more shots of his LEGO APU, as well as a bonus Zion warrior. He’s also working on a LEGO version of the Sentinels. Niki said he submitted it to LEGO Ideas, but the site rejected it because of its guns. Oh well, at least the Exo Suit was approved.

Alt-week 10.13.12: is the Universe a simulation, cloning dinosaurs and singing mice

Alt-week peels back the covers on some of the more curious sci-tech stories from the last seven days.

Altweek 101312 is the Universe a simulation, cloning dinosaurs and singing mice

Are you reading this? Seriously, are you? Sure, we know you think you are, but what if you're just a sub-feature of a complex computer program. A sprite, nothing more than the creation of software. The problem with this question is, how would you ever know? You wouldn't, right? Well, not so fast there. Turns out, maybe there is a way to unravel the matrix (if there is one). It'll come as no surprise, that this is one of the topics in this week's collection of alternative stories. Think that's all we got? Not even close. We'll explore the truth behind cloning dinosaurs, as well a rare performance by singing mice -- all before dinner. Or is it really dinner? This is alt-week.

Sky bags exclusive rights Warner Bros. movie catalog, makes LoveFilm and others wait

Sky beats LoveFilm, bags exclusive rights to Warner Bros movie catalogue

Sky has bested its broadcast and video-on-demand rivals by signing a deal with Warner Bros. for exclusive rights to its films in the UK and Ireland. Once the six-month cinema window has elapsed, each new flick (including Man of Steel and The Dark Knight Rises) will remain Murdoch-only for a full year before arriving on LoveFilm and its kind. Meanwhile, back-catalog titles like The Lord of the Rings and The Matrix will remain locked in the partnership's walled garden for an undisclosed period of time. Good news if you're a Sky customer, we suppose, and not if you're not.

Tokyoflash Online Watch is as Crazy as Naming Something Online

tokyoflash online 650x357 Tokyoflash Online Watch is as Crazy as Naming Something Online
First off, it’s just confusing to name something “Online”- you get into a who’s on first situation real easily. Which is all a minor point when you look at the mindblowing Tokyoflash Kisai Online watch. This watch uses a series of vertical lines and an accelerometer. The lines are just lines until you rotate the watch towards you, then they bend at the right spots to form the digits of the time. Watch the video to see it:

That’s kinda insane. I don’t want to say it but I have no choice really: it’s Matrix-like. In a good way though. This one was designed by a reader named Sam Jerichow from Germany and Tokyoflash put it into production. It’s made of stainless steel, has an alarm and the date too and comes in six color combinations. Really cool. The Online watch is available….online.
