Minimal toaster shaped like a slice of bread shows that minimal design can be sensible and espressive

Perhaps one of my favorite moments in the design-documentary “Objectified” is when Alice Rawsthorn draws the analogy between analog and digital products. She brings up the example of a chair versus an iPhone, stating that if a Martian were to land on earth, chances are that they could look at a chair and roughly guess what its function was. On the other hand, the iPhone with its black slab design, really doesn’t tell you what the device is or what it’s capable of. In a lot of ways, the forms of analog products are easy to understand even without knowing their history or background. Yezin Shin’s Toaster follows that same line of logic.

Designer: Yezin Shin

A toaster is simply an oven for your slices of bread. Place the bread slice into its slots and heating coils ‘bake’ the bread to golden perfection. While it’s fairly easy to identify a toaster by simply looking at its form with the two slots on top and the lever on the side, Shin decided to distill its form down even further. Her toaster celebrates the shape of the ubiquitous white bread slice, with a form that follows its inspiration. Designed to toast one slice of bread at a time, the toaster is quite literally shaped like a slice of bread, allowing you to instantly make the association. Shin’s toaster also provides the ability to work vertically as well as horizontally, sort of like a traditional oven.

While one could say that Shin’s toaster is a bit of an oversimplification (with no strong need for it, given that toasters are pretty well designed the way they are), her redesign is more of a thought exercise that compels you to question the very things you take for granted. For decades, we’ve associated the toaster with being a vertical appliance that ‘pops’ out a cooked slice of bread once it’s ready. Shin challenges that archetype with a toaster that can even be used sideways, so you could potentially cook your bread with butter, cheese, or a variety of toppings on it. In a parallel universe where popping vertical toasters weren’t such a strong social norm, I’d like to imagine that Shin’s toaster design would be the much more accepted standard. Besides, props to Shin for that beautifully bare-basics design!

This toaster lets you customize your slice of toast with personal messages or inspirational quotes

It takes ‘raising a toast’ to a completely new level.

Move over, Hallmark, this toaster has a pretty neat replacement for the traditional cake and card setup. Imagine this… It’s mother’s day and you’ve taken it upon yourself to make breakfast for your birthgiver. Pop in a slice of bread into the Home Party Hoaster and add a stencil with the pre-engraved message in. The toaster crisps up your bread while also reverse-etching a message into it. It’s a weirdly personal approach to just ‘buying a card’, right?

Designed by Seoul-based Min Soo Kim, the Home Part Hoaster is a conceptual toaster that lets you customize your bread with messages, images, emojis, and inspirational quotes. It does what a cake with icing cannot, and helps you begin your morning on a pretty positive note. The toaster works like any conventional bread-searing device, but comes with customized metal stencil plates that let you burn messages into your magical slice of yeast and flour.

The Home Party Hoaster comes with the proportions of a Vifa speaker, sporting a handle on top that lets you carry the appliance around. Two slots on the side let you slide slices of bread and the stencil plates in. You can set the toast’s crispiness using a touchscreen light panel on the front, and when the toast is done, it pops out, leaving the hot metal plate inside to cool before it can be removed.

I’m not entirely sure what the cultural significance of toast is in the east, although Min Soo Kim envisions this appliance as a nifty party-device, allowing people to share toasts with common messages on them. To me, the novelty of a toaster with a personalized message feature sounds like a great way to start the day. Begin your morning with inspirational quotes, uplifting messages, or just customize your toast with your name so nobody else steals it!

Pagan Breakfast God Mask Celebrates Bacon, Eggs, and Toast

Growing up, Kellogg’s and Post had convinced me that sugary cereals drowning in milk were “part of a nutritious breakfast.” But as I grew up, I came to realize that protein is a much more important start to the day. Nowadays, I have some eggs and maybe some breakfast meat to get my day going. And when I’m feeling like a little carbs to go with, some toast and butter fills the bill quite nicely.

To celebrate my love for these great American breakfast foods, I should probably start wearing this Pagan Breakfast God Mask.

This ridiculous tribute to our morning meat and carb ritual comes from the deranged minds at Archie McPhee, who insist you don’t need to wait until Halloween to dress up like this. Actually, I think this could make a great Mardi Gras costume, and that’s coming up in just about a month. The only thing it’s missing for New Orleans’ big party is a bowl of grits, but I suppose you could just carry that around in a cup and eat some while you catch beads and doubloons.

Griffin connects your toast to your phone

It seems like no one really needs a connected toaster. For decades you've been able to adjust just how dark you want your bread with a knob or lever. But maybe we've been missing out on perfect toast because we didn't have the opportunity to really f...

Selfie Toaster Puts Your Face on Toast

selfie toaster
Brand your face onto a piece of toast with the Selfie Toaster. It’s the best way to avoid breakfast thievery. Most pieces of toast look the same- not yours though because you’ve clearly self identified it with a picture of your own face right across the bread. But how does it work? Simple- it uses custom heating inserts.

You submit your own photograph to a specialized website, like this lovely lady above did (the toaster comes with a code to use). Then in a few weeks you are sent a pair of removable stainless steel inserts with your beautiful face cut into them.

Slip the inserts into the toaster and get your face toasted onto bread. You could even spread a little jelly on your hair or make a butter beard. It’s the best thing since sliced bread.

The Toaster Just Got Smarter

This functional twist on the toaster maintains the same minimalism as the classic upright toaster, but has some new and improved features! The first is a digital timer screen so you can gauge exactly how long your toast has left. This also means you’ll know exactly the right time and heat seating so you get it right each time. The second is a nesting tong built in to the side. It saves fingers from burning and when it’s removed it triggers the device to turn off so you never have to worry about accidentally leaving it on!

Toaster Buddies Improve the Toaster

toaster buddy
Ah the classic two slot toaster. The design has remained relatively unchanged for generations and for good reason- it’s simple and it works. Except for one little thing- when you remove your food out of the toaster it can be hot! That’s good, of course you want your food hot but you don’t want to scald your fingers trying to remove your food. Toaster Buddies solves that problem by adding a removable basket to your toaster. Just put your bread, pop-tart, waffle, bagel, or whatever into the Toaster Buddie and slip it into your toaster.

The easy grip handle makes it simple to remove your food and transfer it to your plate without your fingers getting burnt. Put smaller items into your toaster and take them out with ease. Do you use tongs to remove food from your toaster? Not anymore. Made of stainless steel and comes in a set of two. Fits most toasters.

Selfie Toaster: Spread Some Jam on Your Face

Would you eat your own face? It sounds like an odd question, grotesque even, but it’s not what you think. It’s something that Vermont Novelty Toaster Corporation wants you to do every day with your daily cup of Joe.

Custom Selfie Toaster 620x347magnify

The company actually makes custom toasters including the Selfie Toaster which imprints an image of your face onto every slice of bread you toast using it. All you have to do is upload a picture of yourself when you purchase the toaster. Using PhotoShop and a CNC plasma cutter, your image is transferred onto a metal plate, which is then fitted into the toaster.

And voilà – you’ve now got custom selfie toast that you can bite into every day.

It’s obviously a novelty, more than anything else, but it’s also a fun pick-me-up every morning while you have breakfast before starting another potentially stress-filled day.

The Selfie Toaster is priced at $75(USD).
