LEGO Ideas Portal 2 Model Brings GLaDOS, Chell, and Wheatley to Life

Portal and Portal 2 were two of the best games of the 21st century. While the first game was a blast to play, the latter really stepped up the humor and story development between its main characters, Chell, GLaDOS, and Wheatley. Fans of the Portal franchise will want to show their support for this awesome fan-created LEGO design that’s currently seeking support on LEGO Ideas.

Created by hachiroku24, the display piece is based on the big battle between Chell and GLaDOS, as Wheatley offers up what help he can. GLaDOS has lots of moving parts, and is designed to be posed. Meanwhile, Wheatley is about as useful as he was in the game, and test subject Chell looks great as a minifig, complete with her Aperture Science tank top and orange pants.

Of course, cake and grief counseling will be available at the conclusion of the build. I’d love to see this set put into production by LEGO. Then I want LEGO versions of Atlas and P-Body, along with a painting of Cave Johnson to hang on the wall.

Hachiroku24 shared a video of the model on his YouTube page if you’re interested in seeing how it comes together:

Pop culture’s many takes on artificial intelligence

Over the years, artists, writers, filmmakers and game studios have all tackled the concept of artificial intelligence. Often their vision is of machines that are brutally hostile to humans. Philip K. Dick envisioned androids that murder their owners....

GLaDOS Cosplay is a Huge Success

When you see cosplayers, sometimes you look beyond the beauty of their costumes and realize that many of these people combine art with sheer effort. Some costumes are not worn, but endured. I think I could say the same for this amazing GLaDOS cosplay by Athena Cole aka Enayla, who had herself suspended five feet off the ground to emulate the Portal villain’s appearance.

Enayla presented her cosplay at the 2013 PAX Prime and was so eye-catching that she had to be moved to another hall more suited to gawking at GLaDOS. Here’s a better look at her costume taken by Count3D, which includes the PVC structure that she’s hanging from.

On her blog, Enayla said she stayed up in 40 to 45 min. increments and took lots of breaks. By the end of the day, she reckons she spent a total of four and a half hours in GLaDOS’ nonexistent shoes. Here’s her in-costume interview with Invader Boom:

Enayla should use a voice modulator so she could talk like GLaDOS.

3D Printed GLaDOS Arm Lamp: Killing You and Lighting Your Home Aren’t Mutually Exclusive

Do you want a sociopathic robot to literally light up your life? Just follow Instructables user Dragonator’s lead and you’ll never feel safe in your own home again! Dragonator built a lamp that looks just like the Portal villainess using 3D printed parts and LEDs. If you’re really reckless, you can even make her move too.

Dragonator borrowed a couple of UP! 3D printers to complete his project. I’d love to summarize his instructions here, but just from looking at his build I’m sure you can all see that a lot of detailed labor and crafting went into it. As I said, Dragonator originally wanted to make the robotic arm move, but he designed other parts for the lamp in case you just want a lamp. That way you’ll also do away with most of the wiring. And possibly save yourself from being killed by a lamp. Luxo Jr. this is not.

Head to Dragonator’s Instructables page to check out his very detailed walkthrough. He also submitted his lamp to Instructable’s contest – winner gets an UP! 3D printer! – so if you liked his creation – or are deathly afraid of it – vote for him here!

GLaDOS Ring: Wear This, You Monster

Fans of the Portal series will want to open up their wallets right now, and place an order for this clever ring – designed to look just like GLaDOS. No, I’m not talking about the “I’m a potato” GLaDOS – that wouldn’t make for a very cool looking ring. But this pre-potato GLaDOS looks swell.

glados ring

It’s even got the inscription inside “STILL ALIVE…” While the image above shows a lovely full color GLaDOS, keep in mind that this 3D printed ring will come in a solid color. So if you want it to look that awesome, you’ll need to buy it in white and dig out the fine-tip paintbrush. Or you could go for the shiny steel, silver or gold plated versions for some added sparkle.

The GLaDOS ring was designed by QUATRO, and is available from Shapeways. Prices for the ring range from $17.80 to $92(USD), depending on the material you select, and you can order the ring in a variety of sizes – yet another wonder of 3D printing. And if you’d prefer a pendant to a ring, QUATRO has you covered too.

All Aperture Science test subjects are required to buy one now. For science.
