Stained Glass Chess Set: Classy and Glassy

Chess is a thinking man’s game. It means that to play it well, you’ve got to be all intellectual and smart and stuff. Even kings play it – with real people on their lawn. You have to have a classy chess set if you want to keep up appearances. Well, this Stained Glass Chess Set is ohhhh so pretty and expensive looking. Classy as hell. And glassy as hell.

Game designer KnowNothing_JonSnoo received it as a birthday gift from his father, who is a stained glass artist. I would be too afraid that I would break it if I played a game on it’s lovely surface. Sure enough, he keeps it on a high shelf when he’s not playing with it for now, but one day it will have its own dedicated table when his sons grow up enough not to trash it.

That is one beautiful chess set.

Nixie Tube Chess Set: Light Moves First

Most of the nixie tube hacks and mods we’ve seen involve clocks, which isn’t surprising considering the tubes were primarily used to show numbers. But there are also tubes that display symbols, and those are the ones put to good use by Lasermad in its Nixie Chessboards.

Lasermad uses ex-Soviet Nixies from the 80s. They also designed a neat chessboard that uses induction coils to power the tubes. All you have to do is plug the board to an outlet and the tubes will automatically light up when you place them on the board.

Here’s a demo video of the board:

You can order the Nixie Chessboard from Lasermad either as a ready-to-assemble kit for $340 (USD) or as a fully built set for $759. Note that the DIY kit is not for beginners, although Lasermad does have a help forum for people who opt to get their hands dirty.

LEGO Star Wars Micro Chess Set: Attack of the Pawns

We’ve seen beautiful and grand LEGO Star Wars chess sets before, but Avi Solomon’s LEGO Star Wars micro chess set is unique in its simplicity and portability. With your help – and LEGO’s benevolence – it could become a real product.

Avi originally made the set as a birthday gift for his son. The board is made of a 16 x 16 baseplate with 1 stud plates on top. The pieces – Rebels and Empires, of course – all come from LEGO’s Battle of Hoth play set. To finish it off, Avi also made a carrying case as well as a couple of covers for the case.

If you liked Avi’s creation, check out more pictures of the set on Flickr and most importantly vote for it on Cuusoo. Who knows, it might become an official LEGO product. But the good thing about Avi’s idea is that unlike the other Cuusoo concepts we’ve seen, it’s relatively easy to replicate it because Avi was kind enough to share his parts list. So even if LEGO doesn’t approve of it you can just go and build one.

Custom Star Wars LEGO Hoth Chess Set: Rogue Leader, Check!

The battle for Hoth just got all brainy and strategic. This large scale (18″ x 18″) custom chess set by Brickplace puts the Empire against the Rebel Alliance in an all new way.

The detail is amazing. You have the Rebel troops in Hoth gear, the Snowtroopers, some AT-ATs, an Imperial Probe droid and of course the Wampa monster and more! All lovingly made out of LEGO. This isn’t some overpriced Franklin Mint set that just looks gaudy. This is pure geek joy.

Play Chess With Your Eyes Closed

Impossible? Think again.- This thoughtful design extends the strategic game of chess to users with visual impairments that would otherwise be unable to enjoy the fun, interactive experience. Textured magnets hold the pieces in place and indicate the direction of play. White pieces are composed of matte steel while black pieces are hardwood, making them identifiable by heat and texture. Even the magnet strength has been adjusted so the amount of “stick” will indicate what color square a piece is on.
