ICYMI: Self-cleaning fish tank, satellite launcher and more

Today on In Case You Missed It: Anyone with goldfish is going to be into this fish tank that claims to clean itself. Virgin Galactic is testing mid-flight satellite launches with a converted 747. And a teenager built a flamethrowing UAV and how could...

DIY Fallout 4 Shishkebab: You’ll Scorch Your Eye Out, Kid

Like many of you, Caleb Kraft is a fan of Fallout 4. Unlike many of you he’s a maker both in the game and in real life. When he saw the concept art for a new version of the series’ flaming sword he decided to make a fully-functioning replica. This is Vault Dweller at Arms.

Caleb asked the help of the famous retro console modder Ryan Fitzpatrick aka Platinumfungi to make the Shishkebab replica. They made it by installing a crude flame-throwing system on an actual katana. Unlike the video game sword, this replica’s motorcycle handbrake isn’t just a handguard. It’s also the trigger that releases butane from a canister to the copper pipe installed over the blade. A button near the hilt activates a spark of electricity at one of the pipe’s openings to ignite the butane.

Make the Cryolator next Caleb! Check out his article on Make: for more videos of their build.

Mad Max: Fury Road Flamethrower Ukulele

One of the more whimsical parts of Mad Max: Fury Road is the so-called “Doof Warrior” and his rock and roll rig on wheels. I especially loved the massive stack of amps and speakers, and the ridiculous bungee thing he was swinging from. Of course, his flaming guitar was pretty hysterical too.

Our pal Caleb Kraft over at Make: liked it enough to make his own flamethrowing string instrument. But instead of going with an electric guitar, Caleb’s axe is a ukulele – and it’s pretty impressive if you ask me.

The whole thing is self-contained, so it’s really quite a portable flamethrower. The key elements include an igniter, a butane canister, a caulk gun, some moldable plastic, and a hose. You can check it out in action in the video below:

Head on over to Make: for the full build guide. Keep in mind that with a project like this, you’re literally playing with fire, so please use caution if you decide to try and replicate Caleb’s fiery instrument. And certainly don’t try and play it while dangling from a bungee rig on a moving vehicle.

Nothing to See Here but Sigourney Weaver Using a Flamethrower

The Alien series is one of those sci-fi/horror franchises that everyone knows is very creepy. The films introduced Sigourney Weaver as a badass and she got to fight those evil Xenomorphs with all sorts of weapons.

In some of the most memorable scenes of the film, that weapon was a flamethrower. I always rather assumed that the scenes with flames shooting out of the weapon were staged somehow, but apparently, it was a real flamethrower.

It was real enough that Weaver had to test fire it on the back lot of the studio before filming. This image has hit the web showing her testing out her weapon on the backlot of Shepperton Studios ahead of filming. She would laser use the same flamethrower to roast alien eggs.

Wrist-mounted Flamethrower Shows up at Maker Faire

A dude showed up at the Maker Faire in his neck of the woods recently and he had a slick device, a wrist-mounted flamethrower. This flamethrower is different from the wrist-mounted design we talked about in the past. The builder of this one is a guy named Stephen Hawes.

Rather than having a tank of fuel mounted on the wrist, Hawes uses a backpack that looks like something out of Ghostbusters to me. The device adjusts the height of the flame depending how far the user bends the wrist.

It doesn’t appear that flames ever shoot too far. This is sort of like a DIY Pyro from X-Men setup. Apparently, Stephen had his own fire marshal assigned during the entire event. Frankly, I’m not even sure it’s legal to build your own flamethrower.

Colin Furze Makes X-Men Pyro Flamethrowers, Goes Crazy (Again)

For those who don’t know, Pyro is one of the X-Men. A lesser known character in the Marvel universe. Even so, his backpack mounted flamethrower is pretty darn cool. I mean hot. It is kind of lame though that Pyro can’t produce fire on his own, but can only control it.

One guy has now brought Pyro to life by making his own flamethrowing back pack, complete with the ability to shoot fire from his hands. That guy is inventor Colin Furze (the guy who made the retractable wolverine claws and Magneto boots). Now he is setting stuff on fire. This guy just can’t get enough of the X-Men.

In fact, he is quickly becoming a one man X-Team. Is there nothing that the X-Men can do that this guy can’t do? Not so far. I bet he gets stumped by Storm’s power. Go ahead try to control the weather. Ha. You can’t. Wait. Was that rain? Damn it!

Guy Puts Flamethrower on Mobility Scooter: Get outs the Way!

It is called Lord Humungous and it was created by 52-year-old Lance Greathouse from Phoenix, Arizona. “It” is a flamethrower attached to a mobility scooter. Lord Humungous cost about $1000 and a month of labor to create.

This deadly mobility scooter is made out of an electric golf cart, all terrain tires, and a helicopter seat. The flamethrower spits fire almost 10 meters away. It looks like it would fit right in during the apocalypse.

Greathouse Labs customizes wheelchairs for disabled people to reflect their personality, so that they don’t just have a boring ride. They also send out customized wheelchairs to the needy. Basically, everything they do is awesome. Fire! More fire!

FLAMEnco: The Flame Throwing Guitar

Every guitarist wants a guitar that will set the stage on fire. This is that guitar – literally. Don Juan De Pyro turned his guitar into a flamethrower that initially could shoot multicolored flames up to six feet for about 40 seconds. He calls it the FLAMEnco guitar.

flamenco

He tinkered with it some more and now it can shoot 18-foot long colored flames. Don uses a new super compact burster system that works with a Mark 3 constant flame system. Mark 1, 2, 3 and 6 can all be controlled remotely off-stage with the help of a RF remote receiver.

I was hoping for a version of Light my Fire in the video, but sadly it didn’t happen. This thing looks great in action – though it’s probably best used only in outdoor venues.

This Mosquito Flamethrower Will Zap Those Buggers to Ashes

Mosquito Flamethrower

Mosquitoes bugging you while you’re taking your afternoon nap? Johannes Vogl has come up with a solution, but it seems like something that might do more harm than good when it’s in the wrong hands: the Mosquito Flamethrower. Vogl actually came up with it last 2005, but it’s making the rounds once again thanks to the BugASalt.

Despite its extreme nature, the Mosquito Flamethrower seems like the more humane alternative compared to the BugASalt. Note that the latter kills the targeted insects by shooting tiny salt pellets right at them–and right into their eyes. Sounds like a painful way to die, doesn’t it? On the other hand, one zap with the Flamethrower will incinerate those bad guys so fast that they won’t know what hit them. Heck, they won’t even have time to feel the pain because they’ll be dead and gone in an instant.
