This aromatherapy diffuser’s interchangeable magnetic ears transform it into different animals!

You can call me a fan of Fulden Dehneli’s work because everything she has designed so far always has a personal story or deeper meaning apart from improved functionality. Her designs, be it TV or a face mask, always leave you feeling good and the latest one to evoke that emotion is BOOP – an aromatherapy oil diffuser that has been specifically made for kids!

When you hear the word ‘boop’ you would usually associate it with a gentle, swift touch on the nose. The oil diffuser was called so because Dehneli wanted it to embody that ‘boop’ feeling in a physical product that made you feel as if someone gave you a loving pat. Aromatherapy is a proven natural solution to create a healthy environment while enhancing the mood. It adds to the ambiance while soothing the nervous system with the essential oil blend. Aromatherapy is known to induce calm, reduce discomfort, and promote good sleep for every user but usually, the diffusers’ aesthetics are chosen for grown-ups. This product combines an oil diffuser with a white noise machine for a more multidimensional effect.

The oil diffuser features interchangeable magnetic ear and nose parts so children can easily transform it into a cuddly bear, a sweet bunny, or a playful fox within seconds. This little modular detail lets little ones come up with their own stories and form a bond with a product – it’s as simple as “This is mine, this stays in my room, this is not my mom’s thing,” which inculcates a sense of personal space as well. Its friendly form, calming sound selections, and the gentle glowing light in the belly add to the warmth of the product. BOOP aims to make kids feel comfortable and protected by giving them something that kickstarts their own self-care routine early on.

Why this mask + shield is different from everything you’ve seen so far

There are a lot of innovative masks that we’re constantly seeing on the internet and it’s ironic because there is a global shortage of PPE for healthcare workers. So why are designers still creating masks? Because the lockdown may end in 8 weeks but the vaccine won’t be ready and therefore we need creative ways for the mass adoption of wearing masks as a part of everyday fashion. This way we stay safe as we enter a ‘new normal’ and leave the surgical masks for the health workers. Now you may ask how is this mask any different from the other cool masks we’ve seen?

Well, this one doubles up as a face shield so that no bacteria enters your eye and comes with an accessory-like sanitizer so you won’t have to search your bags or have an oddly-shaped pocket. Designer Fulden Dehneli calls the mask Gādo (ガード) and the sanitizer Ken (剣) because she views these as complementary products that will become necessities in a post-pandemic world. Gādo means ‘guard’ and Ken means ‘sword’ in Japanese which is such a poetic way to describe tools – they guard us and kill the germs!

Gādo and Ken were specifically designed for seamless integration into our lives. Gādo combines the benefits of a mask and a face shield with a simple sliding mechanism- a folded textile structure hidden under the shield which enlarges when the shield is slid up. This way you don’t have to constantly wear the traditionally obtrusive face shield but can ‘guard up’ if you’re among people and can’t maintain distance. Along with head straps that ensure comfort and fit, it also keeps the mouth visible to keep the window of human expression open, something we crave so deeply and will not take for granted when this ends. Ken is a sanitizer spray bottle that is ergonomically designed to be more portable and accessible than its predecessors.

Dehneli aims to answer the questions that have crossed our minds through her work – What if we have to wear a mask every day from now on? How do we stay protected as we resume our daily routines outside quarantine? Will masks make us feel less friendly when we interact socially? Can I find a sanitizer that doesn’t look like its sitting in the center console of my car for years? Gādo and Ken is your S.H.I.E.L.D (see what I did there?) team when you step back out into the world.

Here’s my TV, Deal with it.

People are often perplexed by where to place a TV. Most design-conscious users would prefer to hide it or at least have it blend in with other interior elements unnoticeably which, if overdone, can be an eyesore in itself. One of YD’s favorite designers, Fulden Dehneli, has created RøR – an entirely new way to place your TV and it puts your device on full display.

The minimalistic design is a bare-bones approach to TV mounting. Designed for the SamsungQLED TV Competition, it consists of a weighted structure that elegantly elevates your TV with a simplistic T frame. On the opposite end, a high, single shelf serves as a perfect perch for your favorite plant, picture frame, or lighting solution. It’s an aesthetically acceptable alternative to those TV-hiding-techniques that’s as sculptural as it is beautifully simplistic.

A Most Sophisticated Speaker

ljud_00

This might be my favorite speaker design EVER. Perfectly minimal in pure white or black, the geometrically simple design features fine fabric between two plastic surfaces. On the top, the remote finds a home in the form a soft dent where it sits integrated with the main unit. It’s as intuitive to use as it is aesthetically sophisticated.

Mobility and Air Purifiers

Given the quality of air in urbanscapes, indoors are as bad as outdoors. Air purifiers are no longer a fancy gadget but a device that is essential to keep the breeding of viruses, bacteria, fungi etc. at bay. The Lotus is an air purifier is a different breed simply because it features portable units that you can carry from room to room.

Lotus purifies via the main unit and its three portable air balls. The main unit focuses on general purification, the balls are handy and rechargeable. Ther are classified as Pure Ball, Odor Ball and Humid Ball and are designed to serve a specific purpose.

Pure Ball eliminates biological contaminations and sterilizes; Odor Ball eliminates the bad odors and diffuses perfume; and Humid Ball adjusts the humidity. Each ball has a unique icon on it representing its function, which helps to choose the application. Both Lotus main unit and the air balls can be controlled easily by a smart phone app. The project is a part of the 2014 Electrolux Design Lab competition.
