Robots have long captured our imaginations, from the helpful household robots of science fiction to the industrial machines that streamline manufacturing processes. However, the integration of robots into our daily lives has often been hampered by the challenges they face when navigating complex human environments. These limitations have confined their utility to controlled spaces in industries such as logistics and manufacturing. But now, a groundbreaking design concept known as “Turing” is poised to change the game, bringing a fresh perspective on robotic technology.

Turing is not just another robot; it’s a robotic platform with an emotional design at its core. It was developed by a team of multi-disciplinary experts, including designers, engineers, and researchers, to address a significant challenge in robotics: enabling robots to work in complex human environments while fostering collaboration between humans and machines. Turing’s approach seeks to unlock the untapped potential of human-robot interaction, one of the last remaining barriers to a future where robots become our everyday companions.

In the early stages of UX testing, the team behind Turing discovered that mimicking human emotion was a highly effective means of communicating the robot’s movements and intentions. They employed journey mapping to craft a coherent set of thoughts and emotions for the robot, resulting in a personality and behavior that users could relate to and engage with. By drawing inspiration from well-known characters in animation and film, they could identify the most appropriate personality for a given environment. This adaptability allows Turing to modify its behavior based on the specific context, ensuring it doesn’t seem out of place in various settings.

Turing is designed to work in collaboration with people, capable of navigating through crowded environments using body language, gestures, and emotional cues to communicate with our subconscious. This non-verbal, intuitive communication is significantly faster than traditional speech, enabling the sub-second reaction times necessary to avoid collisions in crowded areas. Moreover, Turing’s modular nature allows it to be adapted to a wide range of industries and customized to address diverse business needs.

The versatility of Turing makes it a game-changer in various industries:

1. Retail: In retail, Turing can assist shoppers with tasks ranging from providing general information to guiding them through the store and even carrying their shopping bags. The emotional and charming personality it displays creates a memorable shopping experience that can be tailored to each venue’s ambiance.

2. Service Industry: Turing comes to the rescue of businesses in the service industry, such as bars and restaurants, which often struggle to recruit enough staff. It can efficiently take orders and deliver food and drinks to customers, enhancing their overall experience. Its adaptability ensures it can seamlessly blend into different restaurant environments, from casual to fine dining.

3. Medical Environments: Turing plays a crucial role in medical settings by reducing the burden on healthcare professionals. It can perform repetitive, time-consuming tasks, such as dispensing medication in low-risk hospital wards. This not only frees up staff to focus on patient care but also helps maintain consistent medication schedules. However, the acceptance of robots like Turing in healthcare settings may take time, as people need to build trust in the accuracy of the tasks performed.

The Infectious Disease Coloring Book: Now I Don’t Feel So Good

Because what better way to raise a future doctor (or dissuade your child from becoming a future doctor) than with a coloring book full of infectious diseases, The Infectious Disease Coloring Book (affiliate link) from Nicholas Wright is advertised as “a gruesome coloring therapy adventure.” I agree on the gruesome coloring part, although I question the book’s merit as a therapy adventure. Have these statements even been verified by the FDA?

Eat your crayons, then grab your colored pencils and prepare to immerse yourself in the world of gory ailments, coloring depictions of diseases such as leprosy, syphilis, flesh-eating bacteria, herpes, and MORE. Obviously, I just bought ten of the coloring books to use as stocking stuffers this year for all my young nieces and nephews.

Am I going to start using the Infectious Disease Coloring Book to self-diagnose ailments instead of spending money on a trip to the hospital? Of course not; that’s what WebMD is for. And according to my most recent diagnosis, I have everything.

When you reach a certain age, you will need to take vitamins and medicine to help maintain your good health. Of course, it may be too early because you are still young at heart, but one can never be prepared enough when it comes to fitness.

Someday, your meds will be your best friend. You will want to have a more proper medicine cabinet at home. And if you’re always on the go, you may need a nice medicine dispenser that will make you remember it is time to pop a pill.

MicroMed is a concept product design that allows customized doses of medication. It is more of an advanced med dispenser as the doses are based on a user’s characteristics. Data are entered on a companion app to identify and offer the correct dose.

One advantage of the MicroMed is that you won’t need the blister packaging since it is very wasteful. Reduced waste means it is more eco-friendly for a more sustainable future. The MicroMedi also offers a refillable cartridge system, which is an ideal solution, especially for those regularly taking medication.

The MicroMed includes a reusable capsule to ensure nothing is thrown away. This way, too, stuff that usually ends up in landfills is lessened. In addition, the medicine dispenser boasts a minimalist aesthetic, so users are not intimidated to use it. Taking meds can already be stressful for some people, but this med container offers an easier and more convenient user experience.

The caps and cartridges are color-coded for easier identification. A user can easily differentiate the medications as needed. You will know if it’s time to refill because of the clear view. The dispenser is small enough for you to put in your bag. It’s perfect for everyday use and traveling because you can just slip it inside your purse or pocket.

The designers worked on this product design to respond to a recent presentation regarding the blister packaging effects. The team was aiming to help in the elimination of unnecessary packaging. Some blister packs are already recyclable, but total elimination can be more helpful.

There is a new goal to reach a circular economy in the design world. There are many principles to consider, so it’s not exactly easy to do. There are many factors to consider, plus the need to do proper research. The people behind the MicroMed did interviews and research to have an informed design process so we know this product is well-designed, innovative, and intelligent.

I am guilty of going to the doctor for the smallest concern because there is no way for me to analyze what requires immediate attention. I am sure that I am not the only one who Googles symptoms and then descends into panic. It would be so much easier if there was a device like Kala, conceptual health monitoring smart kit that provides a complete non-invasive medical check-up.

A quick look at how much time, money and stress this could save us – 1/5th of doctor’s consultation time is spent on non-medical issues and there are more than 13.5 million GP appointments that do not require medical attention, most of these can be attributed to the human nature of worrying and because there is no other way of ruling out how we feel. Devices like Kala that use existing technology in innovative ways can pave the way to make monitoring devices digital, smaller, non-invasive and most importantly, accessible.

Over 60% of the world’s deaths are caused by heart disease, stroke, cancer, respiratory disease, and diabetes. The first step in diagnosing these ailments requires simple tools like a stethoscope, thermometer, blood pressure pump, and self-glucose monitor – Kala includes all of these and more. It tests lung functions, temperature, blood glucose, blood oxygen, stethoscope, electrocardiogram (ECG), blood pressure which can reduce panic doctor visits and save time on follow-ups too.

Kala uses artificial intelligence to read and translate data from the device into understandable diagnostics for the user. The smart device is trained to recognize normal and abnormal values – so it cannot diagnose diseases but it can warn you when something does not seem right about your vital statistics. It has been designed keeping in mind that apart from regular check-ups at home it also serves for emergency check-ups, hence the results are in a simple green or amber color for the user to quickly grasp what’s happening and take action if needed. It is crucial in eliminating anxiety while waiting on an appointment date and lets you monitor your health at home which can save many of us from the spiral of overthinking a small allergy or heartburn. It is also a great way to find out if it is a concerning situation and then taking the right call which can also end up saving time in many cases.

One of the coolest features is that it is independent of smartphones and the internet which is a major advantage thanks to the built-in AI but also has the sync-to-your-phone feature to look back at results. If you don’t have a smartphone that is fine too, it includes a built-in thermal printer so you don’t have to rely on any other external factors to do a well-rounded test and keep the results – this is especially helpful in lesser developed regions where users may not have smartphones to sync and track their health data. The parts are made from stainless steel which retains a clean and sterile surface. The rest of the box uses recycled plastic. One of these devices can help an entire community where medical facilities might be scarce, it makes good health accessible to everyone.

Emergency inflight diagnosis with e+ patch

For this reason, the flight attendants are trained and certified for administering emergency first aid mid-flight before expert care can be availed to the affected person. The ‘e+ emergency patch’ is a compact system designed to diagnose conditions to help in accurately administering first aid to inflight heart attack scenarios.

The patch combines ECG, Oximetry and RR band in a compact profile to be carried and stored in an average first aid kit in a commercial airplane.The set consist of 2 different parts, the OXIMETRY which is connected to the index finger, and e-PATCH which is adhered to the chest.

For the sake of hygiene, the e-PATCH features a modular assembly where the base patch is disposable after a single use while its MODULE-e, which houses the major set of electronic components, can be reused.
