These gaming controller’s buttons transform your smartphone using suction to stick buttons to your screen!

Controllers aren’t called controllers for nothin’– they not only control the game, but they provide the tool necessary to even play the game in the first place. Everything from the texture to the placement of buttons affects the game and it’s not a one-size-fits-all sort of deal either. Different games feel better to play when certain controllers are used. To build a new, adaptable gaming experience and to help declutter our controller cabinet, Juan Lee conceptualized Icon, a new customizable controller.

Icon consists of two handheld motion controllers capable of registering any one of the six provided control modules that prompt any given movement within a video game. Through magnetic linkage, the control modules, which are made from micro-suction rubber, can easily be attached and detached from the motion controllers. For example, when playing Super Smash Bros. Melee, a user can integrate the directional module into one of the motion controllers so that their character can easily change direction, jump up and down, and attack Luigi. The motion controllers come equipped with Bluetooth to connect to either your smartphone or smart television, also allowing for wireless gameplay.

Further incorporating the use of smartphones by means of an accompanying app, Lee designed Icon so that the control modules can also be attached to your smartphone’s touchscreen and registered as a controller when playing any given video game. Icon’s handheld carrying case doubles as a charging case so whenever you’re not playing Super Smash Bros. Melee, Icon can charge up and be ready for Luigi’s demise in Mushroom Kingdom whenever you’re ready.

A Dyson Inspired Aroma Diffuser

This Aroma Diffuser is filled with both a sensational scent and Dyson’s design philosophy! Its designer, Juan Lee, recognized the out-of-the-box thinking and Form Follows Function approach to design that Dyson has, and set out to apply this to an Aroma Diffuser.

The Dyson Diffuser’s beautiful cover is made from ceramic, as its properties allow it to absorb heat and deliver the aroma quicker. The linear and uniformed surface detailing adds an element of visual interest to the design and sense of elegance.

The wonderfully simplistic design emphasizes Dyson Diffuser’s ease of use; housed inside the ceramic cover is just the diffuser bottle and the cap, which features a small gap that allows the faint scent to diffuse out of.

The muted pastel tones paired with the subtle surface detailing makes for a stunning, elegant and striking product!

The Future of Smart Technology?

Smart technology is slowly taking control of homes and its presence is on the increase, all thanks to its high level of functionality and convenience. However, a lot of these products carry a rather mechanical and technological aesthetic, and this leads to them not necessarily blending into the rest of the home.

The Permeate Series is a network of smart products that seamlessly integrate into the furnishings of existing homes. A prime example of this in action is their Home Care Camera Lighting; rather than being like a conventional CCTV camera that intrudes into the home, their CCTV system has been integrated into the same unit as the lighting, this allows it to remain inconspicuous!

Their other products, including a Wireless Charging Tray and Bluetooth Speaker feature neutral, toned-down colors and soft furnishing where appropriate, to emulate upholstered furniture within the room. The Permeate Series will slowly, naturally and subtly improve the lives of their users, while simultaneously looking great!

Naturally Blend In With Household Surroundings

The design concept that I am proposing is a smart home furnishing philosophy that seamlessly blends with per-existing home interiors. Instead of solely emphasizing mechanical design language that focuses on functionality and technology, this is a experience focused design language that sensibly blends into the previously existing home interiors. This means that users can experience smart lives through natural experiences without having to learn new functions or ways to operate devices.

These products will seamlessly blend into the lives of people based on their natural and sensible designs. The devices will be linked intimately to provide a smart living environment. Because these new devices seem quite everyday, it will not be easy to notice these devices in our everyday lives. But slowly and naturally, these devices will incrementally improve the lives of people in smart ways. ​​​​​​​

Home Care Camera Lighting

The lighting and home care camera have been integrated into one unit. Rather than having the appearance of a CCTV that is used for monitoring, it serves the role of an object that provides lighting. It can also be controlled by a smartphone.

Wireless Charging Tray for Household Interiors

This is a tray that also functions as a wireless charging pad. Do not plug in your devices into wall-plugged outlets, but place your smartphone on top of the tray for wireless charging. Other devices that we use every day including car keys, pens and notebooks etc. can also be charged on the tray.

Bluetooth Speaker with a Fabric Frame

This is a Bluetooth Speaker finished with a comforting and warm feeling Fabric Frame. It can be used by hanging it on the wall or while on the move. The small size of the speaker also enables it to be charged on the wireless charging tray. This speaker can blend into be included as part of the home interior design.

With the integrated application of the smartphone, you can see the shot screen of home care camera, and control the speaker and lighting. Finally, with more devices added to the application, Permeate Series will present people a home life of extended experience.

Music Making + Sharing for All

Designed for hearing impaired individuals in mind, the Dropin system aims to provide an all-new music making and sharing system for everyone to enjoy. It introduces tactile and visual elements that stimulate the other senses deaf users already use to experience music.

By dropping one’s hands on the dual touchpads, users can feel the music more easily while watching a visual representation of the harmonics on their connected smartphone. Through the control speaker, users can also mix and mash up the music by making simple gestures to adjust flange, echo, tempo, instruments and rhythm. They’ll instantly see the result of their changes through the lights and interface on the screen as well as feel them through the vibration sensors integrated into the pads. Better yet, users can share their mashups and musical tastes through the Dropin social network or utilize the app to collaborate with others remotely. Check out the video to see it in action!

Handy, eye-candy, phone-standy

It’s pretty simple, elegant, and I believe smartphone manufacturing companies can truly add value to their customers’ lives by including one of them in every smartphone box. I’m talking about this stand designed by Kyuho, Juan, Joongu & Found/Founded. Designed to be flat when folded, but a rather elegant and portable charging solution when opened out, the stand folds out to become a nifty phone charging and display dock as well as a smartwatch charging/display dock. Made to be as handy and as portable as the phones and chargers themselves, the stand is rather neat, and provides a consolidated charging orientation that could be pretty handy for workspaces and bedside tables, removing the clutter, and adding a slight bit of organization. Plus, I think that orange looks absolutely delicious!

Out-of-this-World Photography

Designed for use in zero gravity situations, Leica Space aims to produce out-of-this-world photography! This modern action cam is equipped with a three-axis motorized gimbal system that allows users to take pictures of a subject in a gravity-free space or spacecraft, or autonomously using a laser tracking system that follows subjects as they float around! It is composed of a specialized mount that can be fixed on a structure or space suit in a spacecraft, a handle module that allows it to be carried, as well as a screen module specially adapted for space.

Jell Balls That Clean

The Jell Balls is a home appliance that can be used for cleaning up the floor. It basically uses the jell surface tension principle to make the eight jell surfaced balls to roll around a space and clean it. The appliance analyses an area and then disperses the balls to do their job. The balls can be used in wet areas like the bathroom and the kitchen.

Jell Balls is a 2013 Electrolux Design Lab Semifinalist.
