Android Design Changes Incoming

Google I/O is right on top of us, so there’s Android changes incoming.  New leaked screenshots give a preview of what we’ll see from Google this week.

In 2010, Google hired an aspiring young interface designer, Matias Duarte, to be the director of Android’s user experience.  At that time, Android was famous for anything but its user interface and design.  Starting with Android 3.0, Honeycomb, Matias began revamping the way everyone interacts with their Android smartphones, slowly changing and evolving into the Android 4.4, KitKat, that most high end Android devices today use.

With Google I/O happening this week, we are guaranteed to see some changes to the Android system, possibly even an entire version change to to an Android “L,” be it Lollypop, Lemon Bar, Lemonade, or Lorna Doones, although the past few version changes have occurred in the fall with the launch of the new Nexus phone, anything could happen at Google I/O.

Several changes to the look and feel of Android have already leaked this year, such as Project Hera, which unifies, or “marries,” parts of Google’s software and services with chromium HTML5 features.  At the same time, Google is trying to make Android more attractive to developers.

Other than Project Hera, the other major boost the mobile operating system will get comes from the Android Silver program.  When Android was young, before Matias Duarte came in, Android’s interface was so lacking that many manufacturers developed proprietary Android skins, which is the origin of the Android variants we have today, like Samsung’s TouchWiz, HTC’s Sense, Motorola had Moto Blur before opting for a more pure version of Android in the newer models since the Moto X came out.

Android Silver is rumored to be a component of Google’s efforts to establish more concrete design standards to unify the user experience across manufacturers.  The other components of this are Quantum Paper and Polymer.  Polymer serves as a sort of toolkit for developers to assist in easily building responsive interfaces.  Several leaked screenshots showing off the modified Android design language in Quantum Paper, built with Polymer.

Android KitKat 4.4.4 Is Here – What’s new?

Android_KitKat_1

The new Android firmware update has just rolled out, and Google is fixing several vulnerabilities across platforms. Keep reading to find what’s new!

It hasn’t been all that long since Android 4.4.3 KitKat launched, but Google already noticed a couple of issues with it that they wanted to fix ASAP. That’s why they rolled a new update for their operating system last Thursday. So far, Android 4.4.4 is available at the Nexus Factory Image page for Nexus 4, 5, 7 and 10.

According to Android Engineering Program Manager Sascha Prüter, this update is very minor and just aimed at fixing some security holes, mainly the CVE-2014-0224 flaw, a result of the Heartbleed bug that made headlines recently. Other than that, the patch is supposed to increase stability and do some bug fixes, mainly the battery drain when the camera was on. It is unclear as of now if this patch will roll for any non-nexus devices.

OK, Google Everywhere: Big Google Brother Is Listening

It’s not a myth that everyone uses Google all of the time. If you’re constantly using Google, then you’ll like the fact that it might soon be possible to access the “OK, Google” voice assistant feature from anywhere on your Android phone.

The OK, Google functionality is handy, but you currently have to be on your home screen or in the Google Search app for it to work. It allows you to perform searches, set reminders, set alarms, and more. New rumors indicate that it might be making its way into apps, providing app-specific voice commands. Your phone would be constantly listening to you for this activation phrase, and then could provide contextual commands inside individual apps. What’s not clear is if the already existing commands would also be available from within apps, or just app-specific commands.

Bake Me off a Piece of this KitKat Cake

Japan gets all the cool stuff. Take KitKats, for instance. In Japan they have introduced all kinds of flavors in the past – like blueberry cheesecake, soybean, red chilli, wasabi and more. And Nestle is not through innovating yet. Now they have introduced a KitKat that you have to bake in the oven.

This new KitKat treat really takes the cake. It sounds pretty awesome. The top layer of the pudding flavored mini KitKat melts when heated and fuses with the wafer-biscuit giving it a dark brown texture and hopefully a great taste. These cakes are slated to hit Japan’s KitKat cafe on March 24th and will be sold for a ¥500 (~$5 USD).
