Bob Ross Chia Pet
Bob Ross was best known for his calm demeanor, prolific painting skills and of course his perfectly permed hair. The latter of which makes him ideal to be transformed into the Bob Ross Chia Pet. Fun fact: Bob actually had straight hair but had it permed even though he didn’t really like that afro style. He had wanted to save money on haircuts but then it became his trademark and he was basically stuck with it. That’s what we here at Craziest Gadgets like to call, “not a mistake, just a happy accident”. And we’re all better for it.
You could take the Joy of Painting a little literally here and actually paint the planter, or just let it grow out naturally. There’s no incorrect way of painting, just go with how you feel, paint what you want, where you want, how you want. As Bob Ross would say “there’s nothing wrong with having a tree as your friend” (or at least the box quotes him as saying that anyway). And there’s nothing wrong with having a chia as your friend.

Furniture For Your Plant Friends
There’s nothing that will bring a little life (literally) to your dwelling faster than a plant or two (or three, or four, or fifty!). However, not everyone is a fan of standalone planters and pots cluttering up their living quarters. The latest from Kekkilä, the Green series of home furnishings aims to provide plenty of room for all your favorite plants.
The designs, which consist of shelving, boxes, ladders and more, feature integrated containers and surfaces that make perfect homes for plants next to your books and other belongings. They take up the same size footprint that your standard furniture would occupy, only they give your space freshness and a natural component you can enjoy. Some units also contain built-in lighting to help plants grow indoors while providing illumination and ambiance to your room. Use them inside or out and put your green thumb to practice!
Designer: Pentagon Design for Kekkilä
The Green Box is an airy structured growing box with a lid, which can be used a storage box off-growing season.
The Green Shelf is a small-footprint stand with detachable shelves for creating a showcase of your favorite plants and pots.
The Green Light works as an ambiance light and is attachable to the Green Box and the Green Ladder product.
The Green Ladder is a three-tiered pot stand and it can be attached to the Green Light by stringing it to the fastening supports.
The Green Trellis Line is suitable to be used as a stand-alone or as an add-on to the Green Box and it’s perfect for supporting climbing clematis. The Trellis Wave offers an eye-catching design feature to urban spaces and it’s perfect for supporting climbing plants which prefer more vertical support.
Levitating Rotating Planter
Take your plant game up a level with a hovering planter. Floating plants- not just for astronauts anymore. The Lyfe Planter is a levitating 12-sided geodesic molded silicon planter. It sits above a solid rectangular oak base (which has six sides, I counted, twice). It doesn’t sit on the base, it’s above it. High above. Floating above. How does it work? Magnets. (Magnets, how do they work?)
Designed in Sweden, because of course it was, by a group called Flyte, Lyfe has an embedded electromagnetic coil in the oak base. A magnet in the bottom of the planter keeps it afloat. But wait, there’s more. No longer does the back side of your plants need to suffer from a lack of light and hurt feelings because nobody ever sees that side. Problem solved- this thing also rotates. Well the top planter part does anyway, the base stays… planted.
The planter is not particularly large at around 4″ diameter but look how freakin’ cool it looks when you get a few of them lined up. Imagine sitting in a circular room completely surrounded by floating plants, doing some weird yoga pose for your Instagram account. Exhale. You do need to plug each one in, so maybe get the surge protector ready. We’re living in the golden age of levitation my friends. It’s the astronaut ice cream of the botany world.

This Furniture Has an Unexpected Feature
Take a look at these indoor/outdoor pieces of furniture. While they may look like normal chairs and a table made entirely out of molded concrete, each piece has a little something unexpected that’s pretty awesome. Do you see it? Here’s a hint: it’s green. I’m not just talking about the color green though, there’s literally greenery growing out of each one.
Each one has a built-in pocket designed to hold living plants. The chair has a pocket atop each of it’s legs as does this fantastic looking Queen Anne style table below (which also has more spots along each of it’s sides):
No need for a separate planter, this coffee or end table below has a huge (relatively speaking) tree growing right out of the middle of the table.
The glass top lets you see the entirety of the plant. Other top styles are available too if you don’t want to see your roots. Thoughtfully they’ve covered the soil with some sort of mossy grass. Here’s a closer look:
This lounge chair is really cool too, it has an almost vintage aircraft inspired look to it.
The pieces are made of hand polished concrete for a smooth finish. The material is durable and weather-proof so you can use them both indoors and out. This furniture line is made by Opiary, who is based out of New Jersey (yeah!). They also do custom work. (via)

Watch it Grow: Root Vue Farm
See what’s happening below the surface as you grow your own root vegetables with the Root Vue Farm. This self-watering planter comes with seed packets for carrots, radishes, and onions. Plant each in the included styrofoam growing unit, then watch what comes up both above and below ground.
It’s like an ant farm for veggies. The “farm” comes with a light shield to cover up the roots and keep them safe when you’re not viewing them. The water wicks up from the bottom reservoir to make it self-watering. Learn about how plants grow (both up and down) while producing your own food (in snack size portions). That’s edu-tainment.

3D Printed Micro-Planter Chess Set
This might be one of the greatest uses of 3D printing we’ve seen yet. This Micro Planter is a 3D printed chess set with each piece being a tiny micro-planter. Now there’s two ways to kill a piece in this game- using traditional chess moves or just not watering it for a long time. Here’s an overhead shot to see the whole set:
You could even plant herbs or succulents that have a name or shape appropriate to the piece it is. When you’re not playing, the pieces can be nicely displayed on a windowsill without the board and it wouldn’t look out of place at all. The piece design is based off a Bauhaus Style chess set for all you architecture fans out there. If you happen to have your own 3D printer, you can download the files for free and print your own planter chess set at home.
Bloom Box Planter and iPhone Dock
It’s a power flower! The ceramic Bloom Box is both an iPhone dock (also fits Android devices) and a planter. Your smartphone sits on top and there’s an opening to thread your charging cable in. The hollow center of the dock helps to amplify your music, while the bottom has room for you to place some small plants (or other small objects). The attractive minimalist design gives you a necessary functional piece for your modern technology without standing out. Measures 5″ by 5″.
Picture Books with Growing Plants Inside
Teach kids about nature without ever leaving the house with Green Story Plant Growing Books. Inside each of five different books is a pair of cutouts where kids can plant some basic plants right in the book. Now books really come alive. I guess you can’t close the books once you plant the seeds?
Each book comes with 2 packets of seeds. The titles are Bouquet of Thoughts (yellow), Touch the Sky Tree (blue), May Your Dreams Come True (pink), Your Very Own Zoo (green), Green Love Letter (hearts). These are imported from Japan (but appear to be in English with Japanese instructions?) so a bit pricey at $39 each but you get a plant and a book for that. Although it does kinda look like the “book” is a one page poem….so? And anyway, can you really put a price on kids’ hopes and dreams?
