Blush Radiator is Blue When Cold, Red When Warm: Beating Hearth

A couple of weeks ago we saw a car that changes color when it’s wet, thanks to a coating of thermochromic paint. Icelandic designer Thorunn Arnadottir used the same kind of paint to make a radiator that, together with its twisting tubes, makes it appear organic. She calls it Blush, and it’s easy to see why.

Blush clearly mimics the appearance of a capillary, the smallest type of blood vessels. They facilitate the exchange of nutrients as well as waste materials and are often depicted in illustrations as having blue and red halves. Thorunn said, “Blush is a very important organ of the house. Regulates the temperature and keeps it warm and alive.”

I’d love to see more appliances that change color depending on their state. Perhaps a fridge that turns gray when there’s spoiled food inside. Or a bathroom door that turns brown to tell you that someone just dropped bombs inside.

Insert Coin semifinalist: Radiator Labs wants to help you control your heat

Just about any apartment-dwelling urbanite can tell you that radiators are a bit of a necessary evil in the world of city living. What if there was a way to control the heat to individual rental units, without relying entirely on a landlord's temperature-controlling omnipotence? The Radiator Labs team has developed a device to help realize this dream. It's essentially housing that sits on-top of an individual radiator unit, controlling heat transfer to a room. Turn it off, and the insulation hampers the heat from making a room too hot. Turn it on, and the ducted fan spreads the heat out to the room.

Radiator Labs has a bit more info on its page, which you can check out in the source link below. You can also view graphical breakdown of the technology after the break.

Radiating Bonfire

The Urban Bonfire is a classy modular radiator that is inspired by its namesake. This independent heating device emits strong visual cues that ensure you don’t forget to shut it off! With the upcoming winters in the horizon, handy and thoughtful details on heating devices can go on to help save energy bills to quite an extent.

As the designer explains, “Urban Bonfire is controlled by tapping the base with one’s foot rather than bending over to turn a dial, as is the typical mode of operation for radiator heaters. Tapping the base of the bars pushes them inward at the bottom. Correspondingly, the top of the bars tilt outwards providing the vent space, through which heat is emitted. The change in shape provides a clear visual indication that the heater is on. With inbuilt LEDs that focus on the wall beside it, Urban Bonfire can also function as a night-light. The orange light references flames. The geometric styling of the bars was inspired by the image of wood stacked up to make an outdoor bonfire. “

Urban Bonfire is a 2012 red dot award: design concept winning entry.

Thermosaurus Radiator with Adorable Mittens Soon to Be Heating Your Home?

You use space heaters occasionally to heat a small room, but those are honestly huge eye sores.  As in, your visitors walk in, and they walk out with bandages on their corneas and a plan to sue your broke self.  So, avoid all of these issues and take a look at the Thermosaurus Radiator, which, unfortunately, is still a prototype right now.

Hopefully, though, we’ll be able to use it to heat our chilly dome homes in Antarctica soon, preferably before my fingers fall off and the penguins eat them.  Greedy little things – first, my sandwiches, and now my fingers? I’M NEVER WATCHING MARCH OF THE PENGUINS EVER AGAIN.  And if I do, it’s only because Morgan Freeman has the voice of a manly meadowlark.

The Thermosaurus Radiator is definitely a geeky way to keep your house warm, and it’s apparently very safe in terms of not burning down your house.  They put adorable little mittens on the T. Rex, so I’m assuming that those will never turn into adorable flaming mittens that are a danger to everyone in the household.  Don’t get me wrong – flaming mittens are awesome, but people with the Thermosaurus Radiator probably have kids who haven’t burned themselves enough times to know the dangers of fire.  Me?  I still burn myself all the time, but that’s because I’m a moron.  *Touches the stove*

The Thermosaurus Radiator, when Art Lebedev Studio is ready to make it for all of us to enjoy, will most likely be made out of cast iron.  Below are a couple (crazy and wild) shots of the tiny model they made of their beloved T-Rex when they believed that they had come upon the perfect design for this dino-themed space heater.  That face – that face is the epitome of success.  *Success kid fist pump*

The Thermosaurus Radiator is awesome, but you’re probably looking for some more great dino-themed things: don’t worry, y’all, I’ve got you covered.  There’s the 3D Printed Dinosaur for you to look at, as well as the Robo-Rex LEGO Dinosaur.
