Official SEGA Mega Drive (Genesis) Mini is Coming

Nintendo has had a lot of demand for their mini consoles, so now it is SEGA’s turn to take our money by hitting us right in the nostalgia. That said, the company has announced the Mega Drive Mini. For those unfamiliar with the name “Mega Drive,” That’s what was called the SEGA Genesis here in the US – the classic 16-bit system that gave us Sonic the Hedgehog, Toe Jam & Earl, Earthworm Jim, and more classic titles.

The news of was delivered during a special presentation at the SEGA Fest in Tokyo, Japan. The official system will come preloaded with games just like Nintendo’s minis. The release of this mini console will be timed to arrive for the system’s 30th anniversary. The original Mega Drive was released in Japan in 1988, and then the Genesis hit North America in 1989.

Hopefully, it will show up on US shores as well, because it would be a real shame if we couldn’t get this in America. In the meantime, you can buy a licensed Genesis flashback system from AtGames

We’ll keep you posted if we learn anything else about the official SEGA mini Mega Drive.

SEGA Genesis Classics Brings 16-Bit Classics to Xbox One, PS4, and PC

Sega is known for re-releasing its classic games, and their latest announcement is sure to please longtime fans. SEGA Genesis Classics is a compilation that will offer a bunch of classic 16-bit games in one package. If it’s been a while since you’ve revisited these games, this one will be worth picking up for your console or PC. And if you haven’t played them before, you’ll also be in for a treat.

We don’t have official details about the collection yet, but the trailer tells us some of the games we can expect to see in the collection when it arrives in May. Of course, it has Sonic the Hedgehog, but it also has Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Altered Beast, Space Harrier, Toe Jam and Earl, Shinobi, and Gunstar Heroes. There are likely more games besides what’s shown in the trailer. We just don’t know what they might be.

We also don’t know if this is a port of an existing compilation or if it’s one that’s entirely new. Hopefully, they will release the full games list soon. We do know that SEGA Genesis Classics will launch on Xbox One, PS4, and PC on May 29. Sorry, Nintendo Switch users.

In the meantime, if you’re just dying to play some classic Genesis games, you can always pick up one of these consoles, loaded up with 85 games for just $70.

The Sega Genesis Is Being Manufactured Again

The SEGA Genesis (aka SEGA Mega Drive) was one of the best gaming consoles back in the early 1990s. What you might not know is that this retro console is still really popular in Brazil for some reason. Apparently, the Mega Drive still sells about 150,000 units per year in Brazil. Weird.

sega_mega_drive_tec_toy_1

That is in the ballpark of how many PS4 game consoles are sold in the country in the same period. That’s why a Brazilian company called Tectoy has announced that it will begin making the Mega Drive again. These new production consoles will be officially licensed and as far as we know, completely compatible with original game cartridges.

The new, limited edition version will look almost identical to, and play just like the Mega Drive that was launched in 1989. In addition to the cartridge slot, it will have 22 games pre-installed in internal memory and will ship with an original style 3-button controller. HDMI outputs are not on board, however, only PAL-M composite video and RCA audio jacks. The console will cost about $138(USD).

Here’s the list of included games:

  1. ALEX KIDD
  2. ALIEN STORM
  3. ALTERED BEAST
  4. ARROW FLASH
  5. BONANZA BROTHERS
  6. COLUMNS
  7. DECAP ATTACK
  8. E-SWAT
  9. FATAL LABYRINTH
  10. FLICKY
  11. GAIN GROUND
  12. GOLDEN AXE
  13. GOLDEN AXE 3
  14. JEWEL MASTER
  15. KID CHAMELEON
  16. LAST BATTLE
  17. OUT RUNNERS
  18. SEGA SOCCER
  19. SHADOW DANCER
  20. SHINOBI 3
  21. SONIC 3
  22. TURBO OUTRUN

Looks like SEGA is really making a comeback, at least in one country. Many of the games are classics, so it isn’t a complete surprise.

SEGA Mega Drive Classics to Add Support for Mods: Altered Bits

SEGA Mega Drive Classics is a Steam collection of Mega Drive (aka Genesis) games ported to Windows. On April 28th, it’s going to receive a free update that adds an interactive launcher called the SEGA Mega Drive Classics Hub. That’s going to be fun for about 5 minutes, but it will also come a gift that will keep on giving: mod support for every single Mega Drive game via Steam Workshop.

sega_mega_drive_classics_hub_1zoom in

Okay, I might have been too harsh on the launcher. It’s a low poly rendition of what a SEGA fan’s bedroom might have looked like in the ’90s. There are video game posters on the wall, a Mega Drive, a shelf of cartridges where you select the games, and a CRT TV that displays the games.

The update will also add “optional graphic enhancement filters”, the ability to save anywhere and full keyboard and controller support. But the Steam Workshop support is literally game-changing, opening the floodgates to legally modified Mega Drive games. Fortunately, you don’t need to buy the entire catalog to get the update; owning any one of the games will do.

Pixel Vision Retro Portable Game System: Game Boy Advance SR

A few months ago we checked out Love Hultén’s PE358, a retro handheld inspired by the Game Boy Advance SP. It seems like that got a lot of people’s attention, because Love is now offering the Pixel Vision, a limited edition production version of the PE358.

pixel_vision_retro_portable_game_system_by_love_hulten_1zoom in

Unlike the PE358, the Pixel Vision hides the display cable and has a speaker grill. Inside the walnut case is a Raspberry Pi A+ running RetroArch, a custom made DAC chip, an 8GB flash drive for storage and a 3.5″ LCD display. Love used software to add barrel distortion and a soft shader to the video output, making it look like it’s coming from a CRT monitor.

The Pixel Vision can play games from the Atari 800, Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 7800, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, NES, SNES, Sega Master System, Intellivision, Sega Genesis, SNES and Game Boy Advance. That said, it doesn’t have X,Y, L and R buttons.

Pledge at least ~$460 (USD) on Kickstarter to receive one of only 500 Pixel Vision units as a reward. You can also pledge ~$800 to get one of only 20 Pixel Vision Pearl units, which have a matte black panels, solid brass buttons and d-pad and an inlay on the lid made from Mother of pearl veneer.

They’re extremely expensive, but I think the video above shows how much work Love puts in to make just one of these systems.

Retro Freak Multi Cartridge Console Also Rips Games: Emulator’s Wet Dream

Game backup devices and hardware mods let you extract the data from video game cartridges into playable ROMs, but most of them require deep technical knowledge and are each compatible with only a few – if not just one – consoles. Cyber Gadget may change all that with its upcoming Retro Freak console.

retro_freak_multi_cartridge_console_by_cyber_gadget_1zoom in

For starters, Retro Freak is a hardware emulator, similar to the Hyperkin systems and other retro consoles. It will let you play cartridges from a variety of old systems, namely the Famicom, Super Famicom, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Color, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 and PC Engine SuperGrafx. It also has an HDMI output and supports 720p upscaling, instant saving and cheat codes for certain games.

The console will come with an SNES-style controller, but it will also work with both modern gamepads such as the DualShock 3 and DualShock 4. You’ll also be able to connect classic controllers to the unit, but you’ll need USB adapters for those gamepads.

retro_freak_multi_cartridge_console_by_cyber_gadget_2zoom in

But what sets it apart from its competitors is the aforementioned ability to make playable software copies of those supported cartridges and save them into its internal memory, and from what I understand this will be a relatively easy process.

retro_freak_multi_cartridge_console_by_cyber_gadget_3zoom in

Now I might be wrong because I’m only working off of Google Translate here, but it seems the Retro Freak’s internal storage has a small capacity so you’ll need micoSD cards for extra storage if you want to rip a lot of games. That’s supported by Cyber Gadget’s statement that the console has an anti-piracy measure, wherein the ripped copies will only work on the Retro Freak unit that was used to rip them. In other words – probably, in theory – you may be able to save the ripped ROMs elsewhere, but you’ll only be able to play them on one Retro Freak console.

retro_freak_multi_cartridge_console_by_cyber_gadget_4zoom in

Cyber Gadget hasn’t mentioned a price or release date for the Retro Freak, but if this is legit this is going to be one of the most useful – and controversial – pieces of video game hardware ever made.

Custom Sonic the Hedgehog SEGA Genesis Console

I didn’t play the SEGA Genesis console all that much when it first hit big. I was more of a Nintendo guy back then. I did get into some of those Genesis games a few years later though and that console had a lot of classic games. If I ever decide to play it again, I think I’ll get a special custom console like this one.

sonic_sega_1zoom in

This Sonic the Hedgehog console is the work of Etsy seller 8bitevolutiongaming. This console is painted similarly to those custom painted vans from the 70s. It was painted using high quality automotive paint, and clear coat for durability. The set includes a working SEGA Genesis console and one matching controller.

It’s only $250(USD) – not bad for a work of original art that doubles as a playable retro console.

Pascali Raspberry Pi Portable Retro Console: Ghosts of Consoles Past

We’ve featured several DIY classic console emulators based on the Raspberry Pi. If you’d rather buy than build one, keep an eye on Rose Colored Gaming’s Facebook page. The console modding shop will soon release a Raspberry Pi handheld system, with a case based on the original Game Boy.

Speaking with commenters, Rose Colored Gaming says the Pascal will have a colored screen and will have optional customization options, including different case colors and laser etching.

Rose Colored Gaming is shooting for a late February release, with the base price between $200 to $300 (USD). Keep an eye on its website or Facebook page for updates.

Sega Genesis Megatron: A Real American Villain

Earlier this year we featured Takara Tomy’s killer crossover combo action figures of Optimus Prime as a Sony PlayStation and Megatron as a Sega Mega Drive. It turns out the toy maker also released a US variant of the latter – Genesis Megatron.

sega-genesis-megatron-by-takara-tomyzoom in

Genesis Megatron has the classic Sega Genesis logo on its chest, as well as on the bundled scale models of the controller and the Sonic the Hedgehog cartridge. Also it’s name isn’t as catchy as its Japanese counterpart.

The Sega Genesis Megatron action figure is limited to 1,000 action figures, making it even more of an oddity. Transform and rise up and head to NCSX to pre-order the toy for $140 (USD).
