Neo Geo Arcade Stick Pro puts a retro console inside a controller

Last month SNK promised some "next gen" Neo Geo hardware on the way and it might be here. The company just unveiled details on its Neo Geo Arcade Stick Pro which is actually a combination device. It's design is based on the Neo Geo CD controller, but...

Portable Neo Geo MVS: Starforce Neo

Last year, we checked out Marcel de Haan and Harmut Wendt’s Starforce Pi, a portable arcade machine based on the Raspberry Pi. With their Kickstarter for the machine winding down, Marcel had enough time on his hands for something he’s wanted to do for a long time: a portable Neo Geo.

Marcel painstakingly modded both a Minitel 1 case and a Neo Geo MV-1B circuit board to make the portable machine. He also added a scanline generator and a SCART-to-HDMI adapter so he can feed the video to a larger monitor if he wants, as well as two Neo Geo controller inputs. He used an 8″ 480p LCD screen for the display and a pair of Logitech Z120 speakers for audio output.

To make it easier to game on the go, Marcel bought one of those bootleg 161-in-1 cartridges. He replaced its yellow case with a black one from a Fatal Fury cart and then made custom box art and labels for it.

All in all it took Marcel spent about $1000 (USD) and four months to make this beautiful machine. He has no plans to make more, unless SNK itself pays him to do it. Check out Marcel’s blog for his full build log.

Metal Slug Defense Reminds Us of the Gaming Days of Yore

Back in the day every time I went to the mall, I ended up standing in the game store playing the Neo Geo and scheming of ways to get the huge money that system cost. Sadly, I never got the cash scratched together before the console went out of production. If you always wanted a Neo Geo and never got one, this new mobile game is for you.

The game is called Metal Slug Defense and it is based on one of the coolest games from the NeoGeo, Metal Slug. The mobile game has the same pixelated graphics as the game had on the Neo Geo and has 100 of the backgrounds from that game.

Rather than a 2D shooter, this is a tower defense/strategy title. It is free to play and is supported by in-app purchases. The game has over 60 characters and units that can be upgraded as the game progresses. Weapons can also be upgraded as well.

Metal Slug Defense is available now on iOS and Android.

NeoGeo X Gold Game Console Killed after License Dispute

I can remember back in the day when one of the coolest game consoles to have was the NeoGeo. I can also remember that console was incredibly expensive meaning most of us who wanted one never got to...

Emulator Cabinet Works with 75 Controllers, 30+ Consoles and 2 Happy Players

These days you can run dozens of classic games on a PC using emulators. If you’re good with modding hardware, you may be able to connect the right controller for the console you’re emulating. But if you’re Patrice Daubaire, you take it one step further. Patrice hacked 75 controllers to make them compatible with over 110 gaming systems.

Patrice calls his ingenious mod the Multi Video Game System 2 or MVGS 2. He managed to universalize 75 controllers – from an Atari 2600 joystick to aPlayStation controller – so that they’ll work with different gaming systems via a custom VGA adapter. Patrice claims his system has zero input lag and that the controllers weigh more or less the same as unmodified ones. Patrice was also able to add additional functions like a quick save button on some of the controllers.

To present his invention, Patrice built the MVGS 2 Dream Station, a PC with over 30 gaming system emulators. It has a nice cabinet with a built-in monitor and lets up to two players geek out. He also setup a rotating display stand for the controllers.

Pick your jaw up from the floor and head to the MVGS 2 website for more information.

Neo Geo X hacked to run Unibios, unofficial game ROMS

Neo Geo X hacked to run Unibios, unofficial game ROMS

After witnessing the fall of the DS, DSi, 3DS and PlayStation Vita, it's no surprise to hear that the Neo Geo X has succumbed to the talents of the homebrew community, but it is a little shocking how easy the handheld was to conquer. Upon cracking the device open, enthusiasts were surprised to find no copy protection to speak of -- just a lightly glued MicroSD card. The folks on the Neo Geo forum wasted no time experimenting, and soon found that the handheld's Bios and game ROMs can be successfully swapped for new games or custom loaders. Substitute files need to retain the name of the file they replace, and swapped games remain mislabeled in the Neo Geo X menu, but the trick has already allowed some users to install the popular AES Unibios. The community hopes that the discovery will eventually allow them to tweak the handheld's TV-out resolution and enable manual switching between AES / MVS game modes. It's hardly a "hack," considering the SD card is completely unprotected, but it's a good start. Check out the source link below to peer at the device's insides, or just to watch the community in action.
