The PS4 Slim Gets Teardown Before Announcement

Well, that didn’t take long. Apparently, some folks are already unboxing and reviewing the as-yet unannounced PS4 Slim, and now they are taking the console apart for a look inside of it. If you love to see inside of consoles, check it out.

YouTuber Links-Tech uploaded a video that allegedly shows a PS4 Slim (model #N15-160P1A) being cracked open. What’s interesting is that the revamped console isn’t expected to be officially be announced at the PlayStation Meeting on September 7 in New York. I think at one point Sony even said that this console does not exist, but it sure looks very real to me.

Word is that the new system is more about slimming down hardware and cutting costs than adding features, though Sony is thought to be working on another more robust version of the Playstation to go head to head with the new 4K capable Xbox One S.

Build Your Own Xbox 360 Laptop with the Darkmatter Kit

It’s time to put your Ben Heck hat on. A company called Photon Gaming is raising funds for Darkmatter, an open source DIY kit for converting an Xbox 360 console into a laptop. Photon Gaming even claims one variant of their kit will allow you to convert an Xbox One into a laptop. I wonder if early adopters will be willing to risk losing an Xbox One for that.

The kit is available in various models depending on how much you want to pay, from just the electronics to a finished and ready to use Darkmatter Xbox 360 laptop.

Head to Kickstarter to support the world’s first open-source, hacker-friendly, 3D printed, laser-cut, honey glazed, butter side up DIY Xbox 360 laptop kit. If you pledge at least $499 (USD), you’ll qualify to get the full kit; all you’ll need is an Xbox 360 and a few hours to put the two together. But if you have more money than tinkering skills, pledge at least $999 and you’ll get a full Xbox 360 laptop as a reward.

ZTE teases 6.2mm-thick ‘Athena,’ crams in 720p IPS display and Cortex-A15 chip

Never mind Huawei's 6.68mm-thick Ascend P1 S or Oppo's 6.65mm-thick Finder, because the record's about to be beaten yet again by another Chinese manufacturer. Codenamed "Athena," this mysterious ZTE phone's been getting a fair bit of attention on Sina Weibo with its 6.2mm slimness claim, all thanks to a keen terminal device strategy director from the company. While Mr. Lu hasn't delved into specifics, what we know so far is that Athena will feature a 720p display, Cortex-A15 chip (a source of ours said it will be multi-core) and up to 64GB of internal storage, as well as a "Miflavor UI" -- something that we've already previewed on the Era at MWC -- to go on top of Android 4.0. Lu also hinted that there will be several color options, but we're more than happy to nab that black kevlar edition in the above shot (and someone should tell Motorola to take a look at this). Two more pictures after the break to keep you busy for the time being.

CFC backtracks on Slim’s near-billion dollar fine in Mexico, lays out other terms and conditions

CFC backtracks on Slim's near-billion dollar fine in Mexico, lays out other terms and conditions

The ongoing kerfuffle between Mexico's Federal Competition Commission and Carlos Slim's America Movil (Telcel's parent company) took a drastic turn earlier today. According to the CFC, a deal has been reached with Slim's telecom outfit that, among other things, will revoke the 11,989,000,000 pesos fine (about $1 billion dollars) imposed back in 2011. That being said, the wealthiest man on the globe isn't completely off the hook, as America Movil's been given five new demands that must be adhered to. Among these are reducing the current per-minute interconnection rates from .95 to .36 pesos, sharing the Telcel waves with other companies in the country and routinely providing the CFC with extensive details to prove the aforementioned requirements are being followed. Should America Movil not live up to its end of the deal, the Mexican regulator could hit Carlos Slim & Co. with a fine of up to eight percent of Telcel's annual revenue -- which, needless to say, is a heck of a lot of cash.
