I love super cute and functional stationery designs! They have the ability to brighten up my day. Just having them placed on my work desk, instantly motivates me and I’m simply looking for reasons to make use of them. If you love stationery designs as much as I do, and believe they can amp up your daily productivity, you’re going to love these innovative designs!

logifaces_puzzle_3

A little like the tangram meets the jigsaw meets the third dimension, the Logifaces puzzle by Logideez is a nice visual and mind exercise. The puzzle comprises a series of triangles of the same size, but different heights (at each vertex), and the only rule is, “Create a form by placing the prisms next to each other to build a continuous surface”. When completed, the Logifaces forms a large triangle with an undulating surface and a nice, concrete, brutalist appeal. The puzzle can be used as a toy, or even as decor, adorning places like work desks or coffee tables.

Created as a cross between a Pantone shade card and a stationery set, the Pen Fan fits 8 different flat-head sketch pens in a small, easy-to-carry set. The flat pens are connected to each other, forming a neat Japanese-fan style layout that displays all 8 colors for you to pick and choose from.

Table Zoo by RONG Design is an example of an innovative series of stationery products combined with the features of adorable animals. The first product in their collection is a tiny frog (or maybe a toad?) which functions like a tape dispenser! Its wide-opened mouth serves as a holder for sticky tape, allowing you to easily tug some out whenever needed. The second item in the Table Zoo collection is a prickly porcupine. Taking inspiration from the quills or sharp spines on a porcupine’s back,  the product functions as a pin holder. A chirpy little bird completes the collection. The elongated tail of the elegant bird functions as a pen/pencil holder.

Jiachun LV’s Bowl Sharpener is shaped like a cute little soup bowl! The base of the bowl consists of the actual sharpener opening, through which you slip in your pencil, and begin to sharpen it. As you sharpen your pencil, the pencil shavings and the lead residue are stored in the bowl. Be it those yellow pencils or a rainbow of color pencils, the different shavings create a beautiful visual!

CARBU is a compass and a protractor – so if you are a student or a designer, you know exactly how convenient it is to have tools that serve more than one purpose. The user can make multiple circles without measuring the distance of the opening of the legs with a ruler. The slim legs of the compass on the inside are clogged with discs that are integrated with low-power magnets for smooth movements. The compass has a 2 disc system for accuracy – the inner one disc shows the measurement in a 0.2cm interval and this is amplified with a second disc that magnifies it for ease of viewing.

TheBlackCanvas’s leather and felt organizer is most accurately described as a ‘stationery box for an adult’s modern stationery’. It comes with a fabulous looking veggie-tanned leather outer and a felt-lined inner that lets you stash a power bank or hard drive, as well as store cables, earphones, pen-drives, or even a stylus in its loops. Fold it over, secure the push-clip in place, and you’ve got a neat organizer with all your work-essentials and productivity EDC all contained in a rather premium, more contemporarily-relevant ‘stationery box’ that you can either carry in your hand or slip right into your backpack for later use!

Clip Art by Present & Correct is a wonderful history lesson in paper clip design. The series features ten different paper clips from 1860 to 1934, recreated from ancient patent records. The Clip Art is a series worth collecting and admiring, especially for the way it captures how subtly different paper clips looked during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods and possibly even how visual styles could be partially dictated by industrial production techniques.

Designed as a celebration of SpaceX’s recent achievements of being the only private company to send humans to the ISS and bring them back (while even retrieving parts of the spaceship to be reused at a later date – something nobody’s ever done), the Nominal Pen models itself on the Falcon series of rockets (the Falcon 9 Block 5 in particular). The pen comes in a similar light+dark metal finish, featuring four retractable legs that open out, allowing it to stand vertically on its own… after all, it would be quite shameful to have to put a rocket-shaped pen in your pen-stand, right?

Clamp Basket by Seungwan Kang & Seonhee Shin does pretty much exactly what it says on the tin; it’s a small container that attaches to the side of the desk and allows the user to collect the rubber residue that is strewn across the work surface. A compact brush is neatly integrated into the top of the bin to ensure that every last bit of rubber is disposed of! Also featured on the top of the device is a pencil sharpener, which directly takes care of those annoying pencil shavings. Be it pencil shavings, crumbs, or even waste tissue, we think the Clamp Basket is a glam addition to every desk!

10 Best pens designed with love for every design + stationery addict!

If you have clicked on this post, you share our deep-seated love for everything stationery – trust me when I say we can fawn over paper clips too! Working every day with product design means we have an eye for attention to detail that is there in the material of the design, of the form of the pen to its finish, we appreciate the effort and long hours put in by the designer. It is this attention to detail that sets an ordinary pen apart from the designer pens we have curated here. Each design here will leave you in awe as well as with a smile as you share our enthusiasm – from the SpaceX inspired pen that ‘lands’ on your desk to those COPIC markers given a new lease of life in a more portable fan-shaped design. The designs in this collection are so essential, they will be elevated from a pen design to an essential EDC that will be the most valued gift you will ever own.
P.S. – This collection will make a really thoughtful Christmas gift for every stationery lover – it’s never too early to start Xmas shopping!

Inspired by the democratization of space travel and how one private company, founded by Elon Musk is leading the charge to make space-travel accessible to all, the Nominal Pen is literally designed to look like a rocket… making it perhaps the most literal take on the ‘space pen’. The pen’s name comes from the term ‘nominal’, often used for when everything’s going smoothly and according to plan. The Nominal Pen’s retractable legs are operated by a twist-to-open mechanism machined right into the pen’s metal body… while the opposite end of the pen features a magnetic crew-capsule that detaches from the rocket-body!

Not technically a pen, the 3Dsimo MultiPro by Petr Duba is the wet dream of every designer/creator who just wants to go wild with creating and not be limited by the availability of prototyping or workshop tools. Designed to cut down on expensive gadgets that otherwise collect dust in your workshop, 3Dsimo MultiPro helps democratize creation, with its pen-shaped tool and detachable head system that works much like a hand-held power tool. Its detachable heads let it instantly transform into a drill machine, an electric screwdriver, a jigsaw, a foam-cutter, soldering iron, heat-etcher/engraver, and even a 3D printing pen (like the 3Doodler).

Celebrated as the most successful fountain pen in crowdfunding history, the Stilform INK is back in its minimal, delightful glory, but with a few tiny tweaks that make it better and more long-lasting. The pen comes in its signature cylindrical design, with two flat edges running length-wise to prevent it from rolling. Its iconic element lies in the magnetic cap, which cleverly self-aligns as it snaps to the pen, thanks to multiple hidden neodymium magnets that make sure the cap fits on the right way. To open the pen, just twist the cap causing the inner magnets to repel each other, and the cap effortlessly comes off to reveal the German-made Peter Bock nib sitting inside.

Each individual sketch pen is detachable too, allowing you to snap off and on pens to create a palette of your choice! Stationery-hoarders, you’ve been warned.

An unusual looking and unusually handy piece of EDC, Noval Bell’s Darter pen comes entirely machined from aluminum and brass. The outer body sits at a remarkable 58mm in height (that’s the same size as an AA battery), and houses inside it a Cross Matrix ballpoint refill. Around the refill also sits the intricately machined sewing kit which cleverly houses 4 needles, a bobbin, 2 spools of thread, and even space for a spare button for good measure. The Cross Matrix ballpoint refill ensures the Darter works spectacularly as a writing instrument, while although the sewing module won’t be something you use often, it’ll be a practical lifesaver when you do end up needing it to stitch the hole in your pockets from your other extravagant purchases!

nuka comprises of an eternal pencil, made of a specialized alloy tip that can oxidize a paper’s surface without a residue, essentially making it run forever (and not need sharpening either). While that, in itself, is pretty marvelous, it comes with nuka’s invincible notebook. The notebook is waterproof, tear-proof, and works wonderfully in conjunction with the nuka pencil. Together, you can take notes practically anywhere, anyhow. Write in the rain, in the snow, upside down, or even in a hurry. nuka’s notebook is capable of being your canvas in practically any scenario without ripping, tearing, or affecting your line-quality. What do you do when the notebook gets over? nuka also comes with a specialized eraser fluid that lets you wipe the entire book clean, leaving not even a trace of your lines and notes. The eraser fluid comes in both spray and wet-wipe form, and wipes the oxidization/lines/notes off the paper, making it brand new, something even water or an eraser can’t do.

Designed by Alasdair MacLaine, Wingback’s Black Steel collection sports three minimal-yet-functional products that are bound to be an unwavering part of your everyday carry. A bullet-sized Key Cache helps you store emergency money on your keychain, while a mechanical pen with its comfortable broad design promises to be the last pen you’ll ever want to use. All of the Black Steel products are precisely lathe-manufactured in the UK using stainless steel, before being coated with a 3um thick surface of the magical Tungsten Carbide using a revolutionary process called magnetron sputtering. The result is a product with a black finish that’s still remarkably shiny, thanks to the steel sitting underneath it. You can even get custom personalized inscriptions laser-engraved onto your products, revealing the shining steel underneath the black coating. Each EDC gear is designed to be perfectly functional as well as aesthetic, with impeccable tolerances, and knurled surfaces that make using the items easy.

The concrete stationery created by 22Studio is no less than art, these are made to last lifelong and passed down as family collectibles through generations. Concrete is used to make this pen because it adds a rich look without making it shiny or fancy – it is simple but makes a bold statement. The solid pen starts as a liquid mixture of different elements and then it allowed to set like stone. The concrete pen is carefully designed and crafted by hand in the studio which gives it its unique personality.

Rather sardonically titled “Not Just Another Black Pencil”, Matteo Ercole’s pencil design is everything a stationery-lover wants. Bringing an avant-garde design to mechanical lead pencils, Ercole’s concept is as luxurious and desirable as most state-of-the-art collector-edition fountain pens are. With a thick, robust metal body, complete with an anodized finish and a matching-tone speckle (just like you’d see in professional camera bodies), Not Just Another Black Pencil is a delight to look at, as the light gently bounces off its satin-finish body, and I imagine it’s a pleasure to grip too, with the cold metal feeling just great against your fingertips.

Touch the SHIRO and it’s like nothing you’ve ever drawn or written with before. The diatomite-material, along with the SHIRO’s wavy texture are a complete tactile experience. The pen derives its name from the Japanese word for waves too, a reference not only to the unique wavy pattern on the pen’s body, but also the origin of the Diatomite material. Almost like holding an incredibly lightweight piece of stone, the SHIRO Drawing Pen feels equal parts light yet solid. The diatomite’s inherently porous nature also makes drawing/writing more comfortable, as the pen’s body absorbs moisture or perspiration on your hands, giving you an easy penning experience. Fitted with a graphite lead on the inside, the SHIRO is perfect for writing, sketching, and drawing plans. Whether it’s as small as a doodle in a notebook or a long as a detailed design sketch, SHIRO pulls you in with its incredible textured design, and keeps you in with its comfortable writing experience.

ATECH’s multifunctional seven-in-one pen is a marvel in itself. What starts off as a handy ballpoint pen goes on to reveal six more of its counterparts. Not only does it function as a ballpoint pen, but as a stylus for your smartphone and other touch screen devices, bottle opener, 2mm mini flat-head screwdriver, 2.5 mm Phillips screwdriver, smartphone stand, and a metric and inch ruler! It provides multiple solutions for your minute everyday problems! Crafted out of aluminum and copper, the tool is durable and easily portable, ensuring you don’t have to carry around your box full of heavy equipment here and there!

I can’t honestly grasp how I don’t have the Fume Marker Pen Stand and Package in my workspace already. Just a simple tinted transparent acrylic cube, the Fume acts as a rather beautiful pen-stand for your alcohol markers (something designers swear by). Its design doesn’t just have them laid out in an interesting format, it even allows you to segregate them by hue into three zones… One for color, one for warm grays, and one for cool grays. Love!

This transparent pen design crystalizes tree branches to make empty pens memorable!

When it comes to stationery, it often seems that demand overshadows artistry. Noisy, plastic pouches lined with ten or more plastic pens fill the bags of shoppers who just need something to write. That’s why Geonwoo Kim conceptualized the IceN pen. Specifically for pen-users who tend towards plastic, wasteful writing tools, the IceN reimagines an ecological alternative. Before putting pen to paper, Kim took and studied photographs of tree branches frozen over with ice in order to conceptualize the pen’s design authentically and to send home his dedication to conservation. In many ways, this pen represents a marriage between environmental consciousness and the human pursuit for reusability. This design makes sense of human waste by returning to nature. This sentiment is emphasized with Kim’s remark, “I wanted to show that there is still beauty inside the empty, transparent pen.”

While the icy pen is still in its design stages, Geonwoo Kim plans on the manufactured product being made up of resin and ink. By meticulously constructing the pen in harmony with mother nature, the final design comprises a work of art that’ll be sure to take up prime real estate in either your home office or pencil case. Unlike other transparent pens, you won’t want to throw this one away. But of course, ink runs out. As this stationery design hasn’t reached its production stage, the question of refilling the pen lingers. One possibility, echoing nature’s inimitability, would be to 3D print refills, so that each resulting ‘branch’ inside the pen is unique. Lost wax molding, centering a hollowed out ‘branch’ in transparent resin to then fill in with ink, could be an efficient and successful choice as well. With a few possibilities considered, the prospective solution will likely reflect Kim’s environmental commitment.

The beginnings of Geonwoo Kim’s pen design literally symbolizes a root and branch undertaking. The final visual design, in both its complexity and simplicity, is a visually pronounced declaration of environmental awareness. Geonwoo Kim realizes the contemplative connection between the written word and the beauty of nature. The possibilities of merging design with the natural world, or, “man-made nature,” as Kim refers to it, are unveiled with IceN’s artful ode to mother Earth, bringing with it, winter’s textured and fallen branches, crystalized forever in ice.

This 2020 evolution of the binder clip is an ode to the love of classic stationery designs

Stationery Design is a part of what we know as classic designs. These classic designs are timeless designs, with functionality at their core that allows them to be useful across generations. One such example is the classic three-side long tail clip (what we also know as the binder clip) that has remained virtually unchanged until we came across this redesign by JaiYi Cai.

JaiYi identified that the existing clip, while doing wonders to hold the paper in place also faces some ergonomic troubles – firstly, the pin’s handles tend to slip when we apply force to it. Secondly, the pressure points in the design are the creases in the pin which take the entire load, causing them to crack. On identifying these concerns JiaYi applied her design skills to transform the classic, and take it to the next generation along with us with the four-side long tail clip! The four-side long tail clip makes two simple yet radical changes – it elongates the handle of the pin, allowing us to apply the same amount of pressure while exerting lesser force and it adds a new pressure line, halfway through the design, helping relieve the pressure on traditional three creasings. The revised handle can save 50% of the lever force by using the lever principle to move the bearing point forward while the quadrilateral long-tail clamp body distributes a more uniform load, solving the disadvantage of finger pain. This design evolution is the best of product design – retaining the best of the design’s existing functionality while staying close to its existing form that is an intrinsic part of our memories.

Suitable for turning pages, using 13% lesser material and with four sizes available to choose from, the four-side long tail clip makes a subtle yet long-lasting impact on our relationship with our stationery. It’s true what they say, small things can make a big impact and this four-side long tail clip is a must-have for all of us stationery aficionados!

Copic Marker gets reinvented with a RGB slider to create a marker worthy of the future!

Every designer faces this struggle in their life, how many Copic markers can I buy, and how do I carry them all with me? Designers and their love for Copic markers is legendary, there is no replacing them. But how do we juggle which to carry and how? Well, designer and product sketching specialist Berkay Gursoy has a concept to inspire Copic, and it truly solves our woes.

This genius conceptual reinvention of the Copic markers combines all your RGB needs into one! The concept seems to be inspired by the Photoshop RGB color picker or even a printer (yes, we know a printer uses CMYK ink but I am referring to the mixing colors in real-time). The interface seems easy to use, with a slider for individual color – red, green, and blue. Its almost as if the photoshop brush came to life and presented itself in this marker! Lessen the clutter, switch colors efficiently, and no need for you to keep a track of multiple caps.

Berkay’s concept though it excites us, it also raises questions. First would be how to control the exact levels of the colors used, second would be how the nib would clear out the existing color. Maybe if we have a digital input to control the color input better, or a CMYK version to resemble the printer’s mechanism – the possibilities are endless and we can’t wait for Copic to bring this concept to life. A design designed to make designers’ lives easier.

This sticky note dispenser is a must have for every stationery addict!

Having some cool stationery designs on our work desk can really transform work into a joy, and makes dealing with everyday tasks easier. It’s hard to keep track of the multiples tasks we have to complete by the end of the day – meetings to attend, calls to return, assignments to complete and more. Sometimes we just need to note it all down, especially when your boss walks into your office, throws a couple of random instructions at you, and strolls off! Jonghwan Kim’s Memo Roll promises to help us with that.

The Memo Roll is shaped like a teardrop, and to understand its functionality, I guess it’s best to compare it to a tape dispenser. It’s basically a tape dispenser…for Post-It or memo notes!  You simply tug out a note as needed, scrawl down whatever you need to remember and stick it onto your desk or bulletin board. No more scrounging around for your memo notepad, while you struggle to jot down crucial details. You can place your Memo Roll conveniently onto your work desk, providing you with easy access to the notes. You surely won’t miss its cute quirky form.

In fact, Kim’s even provided us with an option of four colors, black, green, white and brown. The subtle colors of Memo Roll allow it to effortlessly merge with your work desk while standing out as a fun office accessory! This one’s a boon for all the forgetful ones.

A bowl-shaped sharpener that turns your pencil shavings into an artistic display!

A good stationery design has the potential to totally brighten up my day. And if you’re a stationery enthusiast like me, I’m sure you feel the same. However, I’ve never paid much attention to pencil sharpeners. Simply because I consider them as a wholly functional product, which tend to create a mess, and lack any aesthetic value. However, designer Jiachun LV is here to prove me wrong. Jiachun’s Bowl Sharpener is shaped like a cute little soup bowl!

The base of the bowl consists of the actual sharpener opening, through which you slip in your pencil, and begin to sharpen it. As you sharpen your pencil, the pencil shavings and the lead residue are stored in the bowl. If you’re sharpening color pencils, the different colored shavings create a beautiful visual! Since all the shavings have been collected in the bowl, it is relatively easy to throw them away. The sharpener’s bowl-like form ensures that the waste can be discarded in one go. No more shavings going astray, only to be found in some dingy corner of your desk.

Not to mention, the Bowl Sharpener’s minimal looks and pastel color options make for a cute stationery design that would look simply adorable on your desk!
