Duck Tape Turns up at WonderCon with Cosplay Repair Booth

We like cosplay around here, despite the fact that I am not much for dressing up (I even shun pants). People who like to go to conferences like ComicCon or WonderCon are a bit more enthusiastic about getting dressed up than I am. The catch homemade costumes is that they aren’t always the most durable clothing items.

Enter the folks from the Duck Brand Tape. They teamed up with the Syfy’s Cosplay Melee to provide tape repair services up at this year’s WonderCon, offering to enhance or fix costumes at no cost.

They brought a wide variety of colors and finishes to take on any cosplay emergency at hand. These guys should consider doing this at every convention where there are cosplayers on hand.

Nimuno Loops LEGO-compatible Tape Lets You Tape and Snap

I can’t believe that no one has thought of this before. This new invention claims it will transform “virtually any surface into a base for LEGO components.” You can build around corners, on curved surfaces, or even onto the sides of other brick-built creations.

The possibilities are endless. Nimuno Loops tape creates a building brick surface anywhere. Snip off as much tape as you need and apply it wherever. Then attach your LEGO, KRE-O, Mega Bloks, or other compatible bricks to the tape. It’s the only tape better than duct tape.

Put it on fridge, your car, make bracelets out of it, whatever you want. $11(USD) will get you two rolls of tape, measuring in at 6.5 ft total. Orders of 10 rolls or more qualify for further discounts, so order a ton and cover your walls with this stuff. The Indiegogo campaign has a month left to go, but is already on track to smash through its fundraising goal.

This Role of Tape Rolling Through an Obstacle Course Is So Cool

Give a geek some cardboard, wood, and a roll of tape and he will cook up a very slick little obstacle course for said roll of tape. I don’t know what it is about this course that I find so mesmerizing.

I’m watching and thinking no way is that tape going to make it through the the slots cut in that cardboard, but it does. I could watch this video all day.

It sort of reminds me of the start of the TV show Elementary, but this clip comes from a classic Japanese kids show called Pythagora Switch, which featured all kinds of fun Rube Goldberg-esque machines like this. you can find more of them over on YouTuber KeN KeN’s channel.

Deal: Save 31% on FiberFix Repair Wrap

Duct tape is pretty versatile stuff, but it’s still not perfect. There are some surfaces it doesn’t adhere to well, and any moisture under its surface can be its mortal enemy. If you want the ultimate repair tape, you need to go for some FiberFix.

This incredible fiberglass tape is 100 times stronger than duct tape and watertight. It’s perfect for repairing everything from leaky pipes to cracked wooden handles and chair legs. To use it, simply slip on some gloves, soak the tape in water, apply, then wait 10 minutes for a powerful, permanent bond.

In fact, this stuff is so strong, they used it to tape together the roll cage on a car, then dropped it off a cliff. Don’t believe me? Check it out:

Now, I don’t recommend you try replicating this stunt at home, but it does demonstrate just how strong this stuff is.

You definitely need some of this in your toolbox, and you can grab a three-pack for just $12.99 in the Technabob Shop. That includes two rolls of 2″ wide repair tape, one 1″ roll, and the accessories you’ll need to ensure a solid and smooth fit.

Flexible & Modular Sensor Array: SensorTape

Last month we checked out a decorative tape with a circuit board design. It turns out that researchers at MIT Media Lab’s Responsive Environments group have considered such a form factor for interconnected and programmable sensors, and are looking for potential customers for their product.

Artem Dementyev, Hsin-Liu (Cindy) Kao and Joseph Paradiso’s Sensortape consists of sensors that communicate with each other to detect their position in 3D. They also have light and proximity sensors and built-in LEDs. The beauty of Sensortape is that it’s almost as easy to install as a regular roll of adhesive tape. You can cut it into smaller pieces (the tape has black lines to indicate where you should cut them) to form short segments or make two-dimensional shapes with the help of conductive tape or solder.

As stated in the video, Sensortape’s projected retail price is a bit expensive at around $200 per 3.3ft. of tape. Speaking with Fast Co. Design, Artem says he’d rather focus on increasing the electronics’ capabilities instead of coming up with a more affordable product. In fact he’s looking into a variant that will come in sheets for large scale projects. You can read the researchers’ full paper on MIT’s website (pdf) and register your interest in Sensortape on Artem’s website.
