New microbial weaving process can grow compostable fabric from microbes

Sustainable fashion has just begun, and we believe the concept will continue spreading as more companies consider such a flourishing ecosystem of materials, processes, and products. It is part of a circular economy where waste materials are being shared, reused, repaired, recycled, or refurbished to create new products. It is one of the many ways to attain a better planet for the next generation and we are glad that many scientists and researchers are putting so much effort into this level of development. For sustainability to happen, it doesn’t always mean you take advantage of all the usable waste for recycling–it can also mean creating new materials, designs, and more sustainable ways for the fashion industry. What has just been introduced and what could be beneficial to the game is a new biomaterial by Modern Synthesis.

Designer: Modern Synthesis

Modern Synthesis Fabric From Microbes

Modern Synthesis is a startup that works on biomaterial innovation for the fashion industry, aiming to identify radical and regenerative material solutions that could significantly reduce plastic pollution and emissions. Specifically, the company has already started to grow fabric that can be used for fashion from microbes. There is science behind this idea, which is why Modern Synthesis convinced people to fund its research, and it has proudly shared that it received more than $4 million in seed funding from AgFunder to develop a microbial textile platform.

Modern Synthesis founders Jen Keane and Ben Reeve have recognized the need for more sustainable materials and solutions. The funding from AgFunder is expected to help the team’s expansion, build a pilot facility in London, and finally ramp up production. The potential of this project is huge, so there is a bit of urgency when it comes to putting people and systems to work.

Modern Synthesis has introduced a new technology that could make biotextiles from microbes by “weaving” and “growing” a kind of bacteria known as k.rhaeticus— the type found in kombucha tea so the idea is natural. The company developed a microbial weaving process (still patent-pending) to create fabric and composites by simply growing microbes. There is no actual weaving that happens, as in the traditional sense of weaving, but what happens is that bacteria grow and trail tiny fibers of nanocellulose to create non-woven fiber.

Bacteria grow the fabric material over time and take the shape of a scaffold if there is a need to create shape or form. The scaffold acts as the structure where the microbes can grow into a biomaterial that is strong yet lightweight in form. Simply put, bacteria grown inside a container form whatever shape of structure—like magically growing fabric out of nothing. But, of course, there is no magic—just science and technology being put to good use for a better planet.

This microbial weaving can be likened to 3D printing because it can also be used for shoes, as explored by founder Jen Keane back in 2018. The shoe business is just one possible application, but we can imagine this process to be used in other industries. In the near future, we hope to learn about a top sportswear brand using this process as Modern Synthesis recently shared its prototyping process and materials with a certain unknown company.

Modern Synthesis’ goal is to further contribute significantly to a circular economy and as Keane explained in a report: “At the end of the day, we’re trying to build a circular manufacturing system with these microbes. That enables us to leverage agricultural waste, use the microbes as manufacturing units, and transfer them into more viable materials. On the flip side, we see the opportunity to have new-class materials that are fully cellulosic so we can recycle them back into silos and recycling stream.”

Replacing those animal and petrochemical-derived materials is also the startup’s goal, so we believe the efforts of everyone involved will not be in vain. Many people are hopeful this microbial textile technology will remarkably help the fashion industry lower its carbon print. Using bacteria to transform into nanocellulose from sugar obtained from agricultural waste is one innovative development we hope can also be applied in many industries.

This welded steel side table blurs the line between function and art

All We Value Sticks Table Gessato 3

Side tables are usually placed beside other furniture items in the home, office, or hotel lobby; however, they are constantly ignored because of their size. This happens especially when the furniture, a sofa set, for example, is overwhelmingly large for a room. Such tables should not be regarded as just another furniture piece because they serve a great purpose—storage or a place for the items you want within easy reach. Without these side tables, the room can look too messy or cluttered, so it’s important what you’re buying is of the right size, fits your style, and matches the room’s aesthetics. But for a side table to be memorable, it must add a sense of playfulness to the space and offer a sense of wonder to everyone who will see it for the first time.

Designer: All We Value

All We Value Sticks Table Gessato 4

All We Value Sticks Table Gessato 10

The Sticks Table is a steel side table that can be regarded as an art piece or a sculpture with its unique shape and form. Designed by All We Value, the side table is a product of the design studio’s imagination, as shown in its distinctive design. It appears like sticks randomly joined together to hold a structure but here, you only see one long bar holding a tabletop on one end, while two shorter legs handle the central leg, giving the side table solidity, structure, and balance.

All We Value Sticks Table Gessato 5

This side table looks like something you could get from Ikea because of the several choices of multiple powder-coated colors. It could be if it also boasts a flat-pack design, but it doesn’t, mainly because this sculptural steel side table is welded, so there is no way you can disassemble them. Nuts and bolts may not be enough if the designer decided to use them on the tubular shapes. The base is sculptural and presents a unique silhouette (like a typography), while the tabletop maintains a simple round shape.

All We Value Sticks Table Gessato 1

The Sticks Table can be used for just about anything, as it’s not limited for your home or the bedroom. You can use it for work or in areas that require you to plop your things on the floor for quick tasks like a photography studio. It can look great in a modern contemporary living room or bedroom, especially with the vivid colors available: Blue, Black, Orange, White, and Green. It doesn’t have any curve or hole in the tabletop so you can easily transport it from one room to another like the Wavelet or the Grab Side Table. With the Sticks table, you probably do not want to move it because it already delivers a sense of contentment, wonder, and joy just by standing still on its own, looking pretty, practical, and playful.

These hand-crafted miniature animals move when you turn the crank

Penny Thomson Miniature Automata
The fascination with miniature stuff continues to grow among many hobbyists and creatives from all over the world. Even if you are not into making little versions of objects, houses, villages, or just about anything you can think of that would look cute on a smaller scale, you can still find joy in exploring the little details and every nook and cranny of a set or figure. While the most famous scene is probably the home, animals come next as another exciting subject. Making smaller animal figures is not easy because of all the details, but one fantastic artist can even make versions that move. Believe it or not, no small electronics or batteries were added, but Penny Thomson only used wires to allow movement.

Designer: Penny Thomson

Penny Thomson Miniature Automata

Miniature artist Penny Thomson now sells her stunning handmade creations on Etsy, and each item sells fast that it’s challenging to grab a set. What makes her work unique is that her miniatures are considered moving sculptures and amazing replicas of animals, dragons, birds, fairies, and other creatures. These animals are brought to life by using a simple crank and wires positioned with precision—you’d wonder how she can do every figure and movement despite the size.

Penny Thomson Miniature Automata

The miniaturist has already sold hundreds of miniatures with the latest figures, including the Little Hunter, Little Dragon, Hunting Tawny, Raven, Tawny Owl, and a Lichen Fairy. We have a few favorites, too: the Barn Owl, Seal Pup, Green Turtle, and Frosted Blackberries. These are just a few, and we believe more miniature creatures that move will be released by the artist. You may want to watch out for her post on Etsy to catch if you’d be able to purchase one from the Automata series.

Penny Thomson Miniature Automata

Penny Thomson’s miniature art is a unique art form, but she’s always been interested in making small and intricate creations. Most of them are magical and original, so no wonder people are really patronizing her work. Her passion for nature and desire to protect the planet is evident in her work as she regularly experiments with new methods and materials.

Penny Thomson Miniature Automata

From the Miniature Automata collection, we focus on our favorites starting with the seal pup with flippers that moves, while the cute tiny seal also wriggles when cranked. The little seal appears washed ashore on a rock full of seaweeds. The Barn Owl flaps when the handle is turned, but what makes this more interesting is the bonus mouse popping in and out of a hole that is surrounded by Derbyshire stone wall, moss, and ivy.

Penny Thomson Miniature Automata

The meticulous design of the Green Turtle’s shell is beautiful, while the flippers look cute when moving. The sea fans and corals are also delicately modeled that you’d really wonder how the artist had the patience to do all these. Finally, the Frosted Blackberries is mainly about a Robin and a little mouse perching and munching on blackberries that have been frozen from the snowy surroundings.

Naglev Vulcano uses bulletproof Kevlar to save your feet from rocks and crags

Not many people know this but what makes a bulletproof vest bulletproof is a material called Kevlar. We’re not hoping we would need such a vest anytime soon, but it’s also a good idea to be prepared and knowledgeable. If only we could use the Kevlar material in most of our clothing and footwear, but it’s not that easy to implement. What we’re probably getting soon are super rugged shoes with Kevlar uppers that are able to protect and shield your feet from whatever danger or element whenever you are outdoors. With this pair of kevlar shoes, we can say you can survive any jungle or mountain cliff and all dangers you can encounter, as the shoes are basically indestructible, thanks to the material’s strong molecular structure.

Designer: Achille Morlin, Elettra Morlin

Naglev Vulcano Shoes 12

The special pair is officially called the Naglev Vulcano—-bulletproof shoes for the feet of highly adventurous people. The shoes are 100% water-resistant, so you use them for any kind of outdoor adventure that may get you dredging soil or exploring the trails of an unknown valley. The pair can keep your feet cool and dry, thanks to a Lycra interior liner that is quick-drying and moisture-wicking. The outsole is natural and is durable enough that it won’t deteriorate quickly.

Naglev Vulcano Shoes

The Naglev Vulcano can be considered part of sustainable fashion because the shoes are built with environment-friendly manufacturing practices. This means carbon footprint is significantly reduced but still with uncompromised quality. Naglev’s aim has always been to innovate the footwear production system, researching ways and solutions that would minimize shoe production steps. As a result, it’s able to develop a new process that can result in extremely low environmental impact.

Naglev Vulcano Shoes

Naglev Vulcano Shoes

The company uses the patented Fuso technology that starts by blending all structural elements of the shoe. The sole, midsole, and the upper are better and more durable and offer a better fit because they have been fused together. Increased performance is also a promise of this new technology and design of the Vulcano—a mix of the Kevlar fabric, a natural rubber sole, and an upper that wraps the structural element, lining, and sole lugs. Each shoe has a protective Kevlar shell upper, eco-made lycra lining, and an Ortholite footbed, while the outsole is Michelin natural rubber and a mid-sole that is dual-density EVA. The shoes promise comfort even if the pair is rugged and looks perfect for hiking–it’s almost ready for war! It can probably pass the military standards since the upper is characterized as tearproof, with salt resistance, cut resistance, and abrasion resistance.

Origin is like a sci-fi sculpture you can actually lounge on

Origin Lounge Chair Elsewhere Collection

They say “two heads are better than one,” and we believe in this saying if the subject is the design art duo Batten and Kamp. Currently based in Hong Kong, New Zealand-born Alexandra Batten and Daniel Kamp have been working on one-of-a-kind furniture pieces that sell and are being acquired by galleries and clients from all over the world. Batten and Kamp is a creative partnership between two talented designers whose works are exhibited at galleries in New York, Shanghai, Paris, Tokyo, Seoul, Copenhagen, and Hong Kong. Their projects are all functional sculptures that many creatives and collectors patronize for their brilliance, allure, and unique charm. The two are in a successful creative partnership that works by launching fascinating, rare, and attractive objects like this well-designed lounge chair.

Designers: Alexandra Batten and Daniel Kamp

Origin Lounge Chair Elsewhere Collection 8

Alexandra Batten and Daniel Kamp’s latest collection is a limited edition release of common objects we use every day—things you can find at home like lights, a table, sculptures, and lounge chairs. Elsewhere is a new collection of furniture items that appear more like sculptures but still function as they are supposed to. One remarkable piece we are focusing on is the Origin lounge chair that features a jet black plywood resting on a giant mass of stone, offering sturdy support, height, and comfort.

Aside from the bent plywood, the Origin lounge chair also uses granite, acrylic, and stainless steel fastenings. This thing measures 1400mm x 600mm x 900mm (LWH), and it is one furniture piece you would want to put on your patio or just about anywhere you want to lounge, chill, or relax. If you don’t think a lounge chair like this is that important, then maybe it’s time you understand what the words rest and relaxation really mean.

Origin Lounge Chair Elsewhere Collection 5

Origin Lounge Chair Elsewhere Collection 6

The whole collection by Batten and Kamp consists of seven pieces, including a table, sculptures, and lights. The Origin lounge chair is actually just one of the two chairs as there is also the transparent version called the Elsewhere Acrylic Chaise. Like the Origin, the other piece is a product of creativity, combining beautiful shapes naturally formed, then constructed from whatever fragments of earth are available. The effect is minimalist but with a hint of surrealism that makes every piece unique, mysterious, and interesting.

Origin Lounge Chair Elsewhere Collection 7

The design duo usually utilizes different materials that are almost eclectic that may not suit the tastes of some people. But what we have seen so far is pretty dramatic with the choice and combination of materials from bent plywood to acrylic to cast aluminum to boulders, neon, silk, and titanium. These are minimal materials, yet when mixed create pieces that are appealing, majestic, and sometimes other-worldly.

Batten and Kamp imagines the Origin lounge chair as something you’d be comfortably lying on while on a “windswept coastline of New Zealand staring out into space”. Meanwhile, the transparent version, Elswhere, is imagined on a “rocky surface of another planet looking longingly back at earth.” It doesn’t matter what you get between the two versions because they are both stunning pieces and are good enough to be conversation starters.

Origin Lounge Chair Elsewhere Collection 4

Batten and Kamp have been creating exquisite art pieces and functional sculptures using different materials. They have already shared and showcased their works at top galleries worldwide—from Hong Kong to Tokyo, Seoul, Shanghai, Copenhagen, Paris, and New York. We highly doubt the Elsewhere collection will be the last of the two. They’ve just started making a mark in the furniture design industry, and we know they have a bright future ahead.

Neo-Primitive Chair proves nature and artifacts can coexist in harmony

RIMOWA Lee Sisan Neo-primitive

Through the decades, Rimowa has released very distinctive luggage and bag designs, most of which are much-coveted among social media and travel influencers. The famous luggage maker has been seen collaborating with luxury brands, artists, and designers to release interesting pieces and it’s not stopping anytime soon. We have spotted a few memorable ones and even those inspired designs that can be a perfect alternative because Rimowa isn’t exactly cheap. While the most successful collaborations are all with sports or fashion brands like Supreme, Off-White, Anti Social Social Club, and BAPE, there are also a few quieter collabs like this one with Sisan Lee, a South Korean designer and artist who is bent on exploring the relationship between humans, nature, and artifact. Lee believes objects can co-exist with nature in harmony, so he works with different materials to deliver unique items with functions that people can use and enjoy.

Designer: Sisan Lee

RIMOWA Lee Sisan Neo-primitive Aluminum Chair Exhibit

Sisan Lee has teamed up with premium-quality luggage brand Rimowa for a collaboration that was meant to be showcased at the “As Seen by” exhibit in South Korea. The designer utilized Rimowa’s very own grooved aluminum sheets, the same ones used on the brand’s prized carrier luggage pieces. He also thought of using tree branches and then transforming them into aluminum using sand casting–resulting in a luxuriously-styled chair that will probably make you remember you’re not yet traveling as you used to.

RIMOWA Lee Sisan Neo-primitive Aluminum Chair Components

These aluminum branches act as legs and support for the thin aluminum backrest, whose design is the pattern for the luggage cover. It’s actually the cutout of the main form of the luggage before assembly, while another sheet of aluminum is also used for the seat and then combined with other sheets by bolts. The aluminum chair stands tall with a silver finish, looking like another expensive furniture item to behold and cherish.

RIMOWA Lee Sisan Neo-primitive Aluminum Chair Design

Artifact (aluminum) and nature (branches) are blended to prove that harmony can create a stunning piece of functional art. The effect is a mysterious atmosphere of two different materials and components, forming an alluring object you can’t ignore. The choice of aluminum makes the chair sturdy and durable even if it looks sleek and fragile with very thin materials. It may look brittle, but like the famous Rimowa luggage series, the Neo-Primitive Chair is made with strength and solidity. This thing measures W410 x D 520 x H 1800cm and is ready to look pretty and perfect in your industrial-style home.

This Neo-Primitive Chair is considered an organic piece of furniture as it brings together nature and manufactured articles. The cast aluminum branches offer strength, support, and stability for anyone who dares to sit on the aluminum throne. The name Neo-Primitive is a perfect description for this piece that gives old materials a new lease in life.

Zero Chair produces almost zero waste with a single aluminum sheet

Franck Magne Zero Chair Design

For creatives, designing something will often inspire another project to start as soon as possible. Designs inspired by other designs always exist, and that is what happened with this new chair introduced by industrial designer Franck Magné after working on the layout of the Soleil & Papilles restaurant in Paris. He was doing the layout when he also started to imagine the tables and chairs that could be used. He was thinking of dining furniture pieces that could be produced locally for an important reason: budgetary constraints. Such a concern is essential in designing because you can’t just quickly produce and multiply money, mainly if it’s already limited and you have an output to deliver. Good thing the designer is smart and resourceful enough to optimize the design in hopes that material waste can be reduced. Zero waste is not precisely the goal, but the creation of the Zero Chair can help achieve that state someday.

Designer: Franck Magné

Franck Magne Zero Chair Details

The Zero Chair can be easily laid out on a standard aluminum sheet as some nine chairs can be made and laid out on a single sheet of aluminum material that is already characterized as recyclable. In addition, this aluminum is said to reproduce almost no offcuts, which is a good thing for those constantly checking the sustainability of a product. The Zero Chair has now been added to the designer’s Objets Publics collection which is a brand of furniture for public spaces, in partnership with SAG France.

Franck Magne Zero Chair Details

Franck Magné has been working on a small budget for the restaurant when he thought of this design. Zero Chair could pertain to zero waste, but it’s not really the case because there will still be waste but only very minimal. The designer said he wanted to create chairs that would minimize scrap and that’s what he successfully did. There are still offcuts produced, but those too can be recycled for whatever use as per the industrial designer.

Franck Magne Zero Chair Designer Illustration

The legs are assembled in a criss-cross fashion for better support and angle, while the backrest portion shows a curved shape that is also smoother and safer for young kids. Another exciting feature of the Zero Chair is a drain hole in the seat that works as a handle when you want to move or transport the chair. The Zero Chair can be used both outdoors and indoors, so every dining experience can be safe and comfortable. Of course, you can’t say this is just another mass-produced chair, but it offers many advantages like affordability, portability, and even sustainability.

Franck Magne Zero Chair Features

The Zero Chair is also available in different colors that can match the interior of any room, restaurant, or establishment. We can imagine all colors installed inside a room, which will be pleasing to the eyes. It looks like an ordinary dining chair, but its real beauty lies in its innovation, eco-friendliness, and genius design that produces less waste.

Inder Copper Pen beautifully ages for a look that is uniquely yours

The Inder Pen The Copper Collection

Copper is a natural element often ignored whenever gold and silver are the other available options. Not many people realize this, but copper is also unique like those two precious metals commonly used in making jewelry and coins. It is a good heat and electricity conductor, which is why it is used in electronics such as motors and wirings. Copper is also strong and pliable, making it a perfect material for crafting different mundane but very useful objects. The element actually extends even beyond the physical properties as it can also be vital to one’s health and diet. As an ideal example of those characteristics, there is a copper fountain pen ready to offer sophistication while functioning as a pen for whatever your writing needs are.

Designer: Rakha Singh

The Inder Pen Copper Pen

The Inder Pen Copper Pen

Rakha Singh specially designs the Inder Pen as a beautiful, elegant, and slim pen that appears minimalist sans any logo or clip. It doesn’t have an embellishment you would typically find on expensive pens. This thing comes in copper, giving a look and feel some warmth, especially when touched. Copper as a material gets beautiful with age, developing patina in either turquoise or deep charcoal which means the shade will be unique for every user. You can also choose for the fountain pen to get some polishing into something with a more excellent, shiny finish. The Inder Pen boasts an untreated copper surface, but the patina changing over time can give it a look that is uniquely yours. The copper pen is also low-maintenance as you can use lemon or vinegar to clean the surface.

The copper Inder Pen can grow with you, that is if you don’t carelessly misplace the pen as any of your other pens. Hopefully, the novelty of the pen and the price will make you more conscious and protective of your stuff. Anything from the Copper Collection can be powerful with its ability to kill 99.9%  of bacteria in about a couple of hours. Now that’s something that may be really helpful these days, especially since the pandemic isn’t over yet.

The Inder Pen The Copper Collection

Anything that would offer peace of mind, at least for a while, is very much welcome on our radar. It may be perfect for people working in sensitive environments like a clinic, hospital, or just about anywhere where sanitation is just as important as air. The designer Singh said: “Copper kills bacteria, yeasts, and viruses on contact and retains this property even after being wiped down, making it ideal for those working in sensitive environments.”

The Inder Pen Copper Pen

Copper is now widely used in art and architecture; that is why we see it more directly in homes and offices. The choice to utilize copper is to make a pen that is beautifully handcrafted from a solid rod of copper with quality and purity. It is actually carved, so you know there is much effort put into one pen alone. The design is sophisticated and yet is created with durability in mind. It can be that one pen you can use forever, not only for how it looks but because it can really stand the test of time. It can be suitable for either light or heavy-duty work because it doesn’t have anything in the design that makes it complicated to understand.

The Inder Pen The Copper Collection

The Inder Copper Pen is just a fountain pen, but it is an incredible choice because it glides on any paper. It allows you to perfectly create letters on a surface with minimum effort and perfect balance. It has a cap that screws for a more effortless opening. The European cartridges are black or blue like regular writing pens, and it has the internal standard pen converter that may help with bottled ink use. A coppery-brown ink cartridge also comes with each order of The Inder Pen to complete the “copperness” of the product.

The Inder Copper Pen part of The Copper Collection by the designer is made by hand and crafted from solid copper. You only need to polish the fountain pen with cloth or wax as the latter may minimize oxidization. It happens naturally, but it’s what makes the copper pen unique; just make sure you’re keeping it away from anything that may harm the material like water, cream, or perfume.

Samsung Bespoke experience allows creative self-expression to flow anywhere in the world

Samsung Global Bespoke Campaign E

In a world where mass production is the norm, getting bespoke items is deemed a luxury. That is true in many industries, but there are good reasons for the premium prices; one, you are receiving tailor-made products for your needs and preferences. There also lies a uniqueness to an item or service that you can say is solely yours. Bespoke is more than just a buzzword as companies have seen its value and how it gives a competitive edge. Samsung has tapped into this category with the Bespoke line that is expected to enrich consumers’ lives through creative design and by working with artists and designers to showcase their designs. Global participation has also been encouraged among consumers because the brand knows collaboration works.

Designer: Samsung

Samsung Global Bespoke Campaign A

Samsung Global Bespoke Campaign B

Samsung’s Bespoke experience is extended to the customers’ end by allowing them to develop designs that will show their personality. Samsung Bespoke has now become a creative collaboration, offering a safe place for self-expression for artists and consumers. In recent years, Samsung has collaborated with famous designers in its native country, like space and strategy designers Jong Kim and Teo Yang, furniture designer Seungji Mun, and interior designer Hasuk Jang. You may remember them for their previous designs focused on appliances’ customizable and adaptable features. Last year, Samsung tried asking non-Korean designers such as American artist Andy Rementer and French illustrator Thibaud Hérem to design bespoke refrigerators. Alex Proba also designed limited-edition Bespoke refrigerator panels with different colors and shapes at the beginning of this year.

Samsung Global Bespoke Campaign

The Bespoke design language continues to evolve as more creatives are being tapped to contribute to the artistry. Most of the designs available offer a cultural representation of some of the counties where the Samsung Bespoke line is available. Limited edition panels with the Union Jack flag were released to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee milestone of Queen Elizabeth II. For American Independence Day, Samsung released a version of the 4-Door Flex refrigerator with the American flag. We also remember that contest that launched in 2019 in South Korea that called for consumers to try designing their refrigerators. Over a thousand entries were submitted, but only three big winners were invited to the Milan Furniture Fair to showcase their work. We can expect more iterations to be introduced as Samsung continues expanding the program and listening to the customers.

Samsung Global Bespoke Campaign H

Some other similar events followed, like those in Singapore, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam last year. This 2022, a contest in the U.A.E were also launched while more local artists in other markets were being commissioned. Samsung was seen collaborating with a few interior design firms and furniture retailers to design Bespoke products. The Bespoke Be You design competition and other design contests have also been launched to gather new designs. The #InspireByTheNation contest in the U.A.E. celebrated the nation and reflected different cultural identifiers like architecture, food, and landscape— drawing experts and influencers in the region to select the event winners.

Samsung Global Bespoke Campaign D

In North America, the MyBespoke offering allows people to design their own refrigerator panels, specifically for the Bespoke French Door refrigerator. Beyond aesthetics, Samsung has been stretching the limits of the business by improving its technologies. There was the Bespoke Creator AI color recommendation service that launched last year. It analyzes photos of the consumers’ homes and provides recommendations for products that may fit them. Appliances need not be dull, and that is how Samsung’s innovation benefits the market—offer products you can call your own. We believe this customizable design experience can turn more traditional home appliances into statement pieces.
